We are in the beginning stages of planning the 2nd Annual Texas Get-together! We had so much fun in San Antonio last year, we want to do it again - this time is Austin! Hopefully it won't be as cold!

As of now, the dates are November 12-14. Debilou and Scamp have some ideas of cool places to go, and Karen (FulltimeRVer) probably will have some too.

Last year the GTG was a photowalk as opposed to a crop.

Post here and let us know if you're interested, if you have any ideas, etc!!!! Can't wait!!! :yippee::yippee:

Hilton Garden Inn

$165 a night for 2 queen beds check in on 11/11 (full payment in advance)
$220 for reservations
$183 for senior rate, but none of us can take advantage of that!!! LOL

And, remember that is Veteran's Day Weekend.

Austin is known for festivals and other events on 3 day weekends.

So, those staying from out of town, I think need to pick a place of pretty quickly - because the rates will go up quickly as we near the date...

Especially at the downtown hotels.

For the Austin GTG - Can we get an idea of how many cars we will hava available - so we can plan events?

And, how many are flying into Austin-Bergstorm Airport - How many are driving into Austin?

I live close enough to Austin - I have a car - that will hold 3 others. - no hotel room needed.

I am supposed to be having major surgery the end of October with a long recovery time (physically fast but internally slow and very tired and cranky from what they tell me), so I can't host anyone at my house other than Z and probably can't walk or even drive very much. But I'll be around at the activities I can handle once you nail down the exact schedule. So I'll sorta be there :)

OK guys. Here are some choices of hotels that are located near the Capitol. The rates are for a double room unless noted. I also included the website so you can take a look at the hotel. Please look these over and send me a PM with your preference as soon as you can. If we have at least 10 rooms, I will call and see if I can get us a group rate, but I'm not sure we're going to need that many yet. Let me know if any of these hotels will work or if you would like me to do some more research and find something less expensive.

Thanks for looking all these up Rene!!!

I vote for the Doubletree Guest Suites... I like the idea of the frig, etc (so I can bring the cheesecake again), and this place has a complementary shuttle within the downtown area (so we can go out and walk back). If my roommate is OK with this, I wouldn't even mind a 3-bed room with an additional roomie... makes the room $ even lower!!!

The Hilton and the Omni, I think, seemed kinda close to 35 and could be noisy??? and I wasn't too impressed with the Omni in SA (the rooms were nice but...).

I'm going to go ahead and stay in Austin rather than at my parents' place since it is a bit of a drive and I will get more time with you folks that way as well. 'Cause I've never done them before and will need someone to hold my hand a bit to help me figure out how to do them. Thanks everyone for all the research and legwork you've done on this. Terryl, I made my ATC 4" x 3" and then joined two together and printed them as a 4" x 6" photo at CVS. I just cut them apart... The majority of people who contacted me about their choice of hotel, chose the Intercontinental.

OK I just talked to the Intercontinental Stephen F Austin Hotel. The rates have already gone up to $218 per night for the double room due to the fact that it's a football weekend. He said they will probably continue to go up as they start to book more rooms. I also checked the Sheraton. It's gone up too. The Doubletree is the same as of right now. We could do the 3 bed per room thing and it would be approximately $86.00 per person plus tax, etc.

So I need to know what you guys think as soon as possible. Do we want to go with a less expensive hotel? Or stick with the Intercontinental?

Let me know what you think ASAP and I'll get all the info for you to make your reservations.

Parking is an underground parking garage under the hotel. $17 per day self-parking, $21 per day valet, both include unlimited amounts of trips in and out per day. There are meters on the street that are free from 5:30PM to 6:30AM and all weekend, but they recommend you check each meter to be sure.

No airport shuttle, but depending on when you plan to arrive, those of us with vehicles may be able to come get you. There is a free shuttle service from the hotel anywhere within a 2 mile radius from the hotel on a first come/first serve basis from 7:00AM to 10:30PM, only charge would be a tip for the driver.

High speed internet and free chocolate chip cookies on arrival! :D:D:D

We don't have anything "locked in stone" for the weekend - unless we get a leader of the pack which we really don't have at this point.

the current plan is to meet at the hotel - and decide from there what we want to do for the day - there are many things to do within walking distance of the hotel..

And, many of us have cars - and we can drive to the locations.

I'd be happy to collect cell numbers if those coming what to PM them to me..

And, then we can have a list of them.. and we can call, im, post the schedule of the day

I live in SW Austin just across the Travis/Hays county border on 290W. Have car, will travel. Airport runs, hotel, just lmk. I pm'ed my cell phones to debilou. My business number is all over the internet, so it's 512-288-9731 and forwards to both my cells.

I have blocked out all day Fri, Fri night, and Sat until 8pm. Have church on Sunday, will be free after 4pm, and do only Sabbath stuff (no restaurants, museums). That would be a great photo walk or hang out day for me.

See you all soon!

Well ladies, it looks as if I'm going to have to miss this again!:( November is just such a busy time I guess. My daughter is graduating from college in Australia and will be having her final gallery exhibition right when the get-together is happening. (It took us ages to get the school pinned down on the correct dates--not like in the US where everything is planned and on calendars years in advance!) At any rate, I'm sad not to be able to meet you all, and happy that I at least got to meet some of you at Adobe. Hopefully you will do this again next year and THEN I will be able to come!

Austin in General

Here's an Austin Site that will continue to get Updated with all sorts of info
from the Arts, to music, to food to hotels, to whatever, including the weather.

http://www.austintexas.org/

I know I would like to see Zilker and Lady Bird...

I'm planning on getting there mid-day or early afternoon on Thursday and will wander a bit on my own around the capital unless anyone would want to join me...

If anyone has anything in particular they want to see/do and a preference for days just put it here... We can't plan anything if we don't know what is the most "popular" that we want to do and there are so many things!!!

I'm open for dinner suggestions on any/all of the three nights...

I tried looking into the bus schedule/routes but couldn't make heads or tails... deb any ideas there?

Ok, for getting around Austin

First we have several of us that can drive the group around - so that's option 1

Second, Austin does have a Bus system called Capital Metro Rail

http://www.capmetro.org/riding/explore.asp

This is the link to their site - I personally have never taken it - since I don't really live in Austin.. - If you click on this link - just slightly to the right you can click on DOWNTOWN Austin.. On the Same link you can click on fares

You can get a one day fare for $2.00 or if you are over 65 or have a medicare card you can pay a one time $5.00 fee for a 2 year pass.

Third option - some of the sites we are going to are walking distance from the hotel, that's why Rene chose that particular hotel..

and, Forth option is - I believe the hotel will transport those staying in the hotel to say a dinner location - and, pick up - those not staying in the hotel, will have to drive there and meet up with the hotel guests..

So, those are our options for getting around Austin...

If anyone knows google maps well.. they could plot out the locations on the list.. and we could more easily figure out which places are close together..

that would be a fantastic help to those of us taking care of other things... help help help..!!!

All the locations are listed.. they would just need to be plotted on google maps..

jmnodwell

I went on the http://www.austintexas.org/ website and did some exploring and here are some things I would like to do/see

Walking Distance from Hotel (I limited this to about .75 mile radius)
State Capital
St. Mary's Cathedral
6th Street District
Bat Flight at Congress Street Bridge
Starbucks
Lots of sandwich places, etc.

Short bus ride
State Cemetary of Texas
Zilker Botantical Gardens
Zilker Park
Umlaut Gardens
Harry Ransom - UT Campus
Texas _ Museum - UT Campus
Beautiful fountain looking towards the "Tower" - UT Campus
Tower - closed to visitors inside - UT Campus

Need to take car
McKinney Falls Park
Lady Bird Wildflower Park
Restaurants listed below

I found what sounds like a good Italian place about 1.5 miles from the hotel (Brick Oven?), I know Cafe Magnolia was mentioned and a friend told me we should go to this barbeque place sw of Austin... All the places seem to be about $10-15 avg for dinner. Sorry I don't have my notes in front of me this minute. I'll get the names tonight.

My Suggestion for a schedule
Thursday afternoon - walk to capital, st. mary's, dinner at italian place, bat flight @ Congress Street Bridge at dusk (parking nearby) either before or after dinner
Friday - UT campus, bus to state cemetary, bus back, lunch, 6th street district, bus to Zilker area, bus back to hotel, dinner at Cafe Magnolia; if we lunch near UT campus there are lots of places to eat like Potbelly etc.
Saturday - McKinney Falls, Lady Bird Wildflower, Zilker (if we haven't already gotten there), and early dinner at BBQ

I thought this because there is a game at UT on Saturday so figured we would want to avoid the campus on Saturday (do UT things on Friday, or Thursday afternoon if you want Deb ;)) so picked McKinney (about 15-20 miles SE of Austin) and Lady Bird (SW of Austin) so we are "away" from too many crowds that day. I also understand the BBQ gets very busy on game weekends so if we are there early we might be eating while game is on. There are a couple of other museums that will be of interest but don't have the info right now...

If anybody has anything else they would like to see/do, now is the time to shout out... I'm open but don't know everybody's interest so tried to go with photographic type places rather than library/museum places.

They do have an audio tour of the cemetary you can download. I thought I would add to my iPod and listen to see if it gives any good info.

They say the bats are around until November but peak is, of course, the warmer summer months... This latest cold spell may have sent them mostly packing but would still like to check it out, if people in the area think they are still there...

Ooh, I'd like to skip the overnight (it's not looking like I can do that anyway) and just meet y'all at McKenny Falls State Park on Saturday. Can someone give me a time estimate for that? It's about a two hour drive for me.

jmnodwell
11-06-2010, 10:35 AM
According to mapquest McKinney Falls is about 20 minutes SE of Austin... Here is the website... http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/mckinney_falls/

I was thinking heading there about 10 or 11... I figure it would only be a couple of hours there... (with sandwich to sustain us), Ladybird (which is about 30 min drive from McKinney) and west, and then to BBQ place by 3-ish... I'm guessing by Saturday most of us will be pretty walked out...

Ok, I finally have my notes in front of me...

BBQ place is County Line on the Hill - 512-327-1742 - www.countyline.com - 6500 W. Bee Caves Road

Texas Memorial Museum (on UT campus) which sounds interesting - dinosaur, meteorites, etc.
Fountain on campus supposed to be very pretty
Harry Ransom Center (on UT campus) library with Gutenberg Bible, Watergate papers, world's first photograph.
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum - 18th & Congress - IMAX and state history
Capitol Visitors Center - 11th Street - Texas history
Old Bakery & Emporium - 10th & Congress - Historic building, sandwich shop, etc
Little City Espresso Bar/Cafe - 10th & Congress - sandwiches, etc open at 7am Th,F 9am on Sat

((We are Guadalupe & 15th at hotel))
Quizno's - 10th & Congress
Texadelphia - 15th & San Antonio
Starbucks - 15th & San Antonio
Katz's (deli) - 6th Street (and according to website never closes LOL www.katzneverkloses.com)

If you would rather have Mexican instead of Italian, then Iron Cactus is very good, there is one here in Dallas that we frequent for lunch. It is 6th & Trinity (driving distance) or ton of other mexican places but I have no preference.

Lack of input means concurrence ladies :love2: so now is the time to shout out if there is something else you want to do/see!!! Either Karen or I can look into it.

Deb, as far as maps, the Visitor Center has a great booklet with maps in it... but I can't get there to get any until Thursday when I arrive unless Karen can pick up some Thursday morning... but if DGS can print up some "routes" for us that would be spectacular...

"Walked out" on day two, already? What the heck are you doing to them Friday, Joni? lol.

Tomorrow I'll try to get reservations at McKinney Park. Looks like we might take the TT after all so I won't be driving my not so reliable van. We'll join the group for the old homestead at the park (I assume that's what the deal is at McKinney?), the wildflower place, and the bbq.

THANKS Joni for doing all the grunt work on the itinerary! I'm zero familiar with Austin (heh heh, misspelled that 'austen' at first, but can't make the same claim for that spelling!)

Well, we'll all just discover it together... Deb's been giving me some ideas and her inital list really helped!

Glad to hear you will be making it Z!!! I'm supposed to interview the pet-sitter tonight so that is my last hurdle... I've been scrambling on finding someone. I have quite the crew now and can't get my uncle to take the dogs since he now has two and I now have three... I temporarily have a 3rd to help out a friend... she may lose her house and while I can't help her with that I can take her Doberman since it would be so much easier to find a new place, if necessary, with only a cat. Few places allow large dogs and then restrict breeds.

So I've to research the in-home pet sitting market... LOL Their "sitter" is costing me almost as much as the hotel room each night!!! but I can't complain since it is for seven (three dogs, four cats) animals...

Well, I went to see the bats tonight, and since the time change last weekend, the bats flew out in the dark. It was WAY past dusk, more like 6:45-7:00. We could see them just barely and it was almost impossible to get photos or video of them. They are still here, but really hard to see...

Seriously, my energy is really up and down right now--major swings. It's a VERY good thing because it means a treatment is working. At the moment I'm planning to pack jeans, sneakers and Chico's jackets. Will I need nicer shoes or slacks for anything? Otherwise, it's Chico, my backpack and me. :D

I'm covered at the airport--think I get in about 9:30 Th morning. To quote Scamp, I'm leaving CA at dark o'clock and I am NOT a morning person. No telling what the cat will drag into the Austin Airport. Roomies, I'll catch up.

I hate I missed it too, but on the bright side, we had fun with family last night. :)

Yeah, I think having only a few places to go worked well. We stayed flexible and with the "modern conveniences" of cells and texting we managed to be where and when we needed to be!!!

I'm so glad I got to meet Betsyfru, omio, and frito!!! It's so great having faces now!!! Emma it was wonderful spending time with you and your family!!! I had a great time with the kids and got some great shots for you... :yahoo:

Elizabeth, you looked like fantastic!!! Critter was a joy as always and it was awesome to meet your sister!!!

I can't wait until next year!!! Maybe something in the spring? Then we can do Fredricksberg and wildflowers!!!
