Welcome to the Super Submission Challenge
Having your layout featured in a magazine is a very satisfying feelings for a digital artist. This exciting challenge will provide you with the tools to get your layouts published.
This time we are going to look at a magazine call from
Somerset Digital Studio
This magazine comes out only twice a year, so this is a perfect time to submit some layouts. They actually had a whole article about DSP layouts in the last issue - and it is a wonderful magazine filled with digital art.
There is no specific theme they are after. Somerset Digital Studio focuses on all things digital — scrapbook pages, ATCs, collages, cards, invitations, calendars, clothing, heritage pieces — anything that is unique, distinctive, artistic and created digitally.
Email your high-resolution image (300dpi, at least 6x6 inches) to:
somersetdigital@stampington.com (ideas@scrapbookandcards.com)
Subject of email:
Somerset Digital Studio
Include in our email:
Your full name
Your complete address
Your email address
a brief paragraph describing the artwork (who's who in any photos or why you were inspired to create it)
instructions on how you created your digital artwork including the specifics as to what tools, programs, etc.
Deadline:
October 15th, 2010
Click here to see how you can claim your prize if you get published with DSP products (http://digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=283)
Happy submitting and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hint: to save your image for the size they require, make a duplicate of your .psd layout, go to image size and change it to 300dpi, 6x6 inches and then choose "Save as" (not optimized as for web). Choose .jpg and a pretty high quality (they recommend 11 or 12). It will be a fairly large file, but they do want the file to be 1MB or larger for quality printing.
I submitted this one
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/../gallery/data/1266/thumbs/web_Out-of-the-Everywhere.jpg (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/../gallery/showphoto.php?photo=353849&title=-2a-2aout-of-the-everywhere-2a-2a&cat=all)
Should I do more? Do people typically submit more than one at a time?
Great layout. You do not have to submit more. Just because this one is only every 6 months, I usually submit more, since the opportunity doesn't come as often.
Congratulations to all of those who participated in submitting pages to Somerset. You will probably be hearing from them in the next couple of weeks. I am working on the next submission, so it should be up in within a day or so ;)
I submitted one, Taly.....but I have no visions of it being published. Could you post a comment and tell us exactly what you write down on the email you send with your submission?
What a great idea. I wasn't sure what if what I wrote was the sort of "brief description" they wanted or not.
I am also learning this. Fortunately I don't think they pick layouts by how well the description is done, but by how well the layout is done :) On my first published layout in Somerset Digital I just copied the full description of what I did layer by layer from my DET contest layout. They did publish it completely, but I soon figured out that this is not really necessary. They do want you to explain a bit what you did, but just things that might not be completely obvious. Let me see - I'll try to find a recent submission email and copy it here as a sample:
Title: Sweet Face
Inspiration: Sometimes an art piece is a result of pure chance or an
accident. This was the case with this layout. As I had my papers, some
elements and my main photo arranged, I played around with some
blending modes. As I was changing things, suddenly and unintentionally
a certain effect appeared and I fell in love with it. Some stamps that
were originally behind the photo and that I hadn't intended for
blending, created an interesting effect and I decided to continue with
blending the remaining elements to complete this look.
Technique:
Behind the photo, several pastel colored digital papers are arranged
into a colorful collage and clipped to half-tone masks. Over it that
main photo is placed and it's blend mode changed to Vivid Light, which
changed the soft colors into bright ones. Another copy of the photo is
place on top and it's blending mode is change to Overlay. The girl is
standing in front of a door and the photograph is taken with strong
light, so that it has strong contrasts. The rest of the elements are
arranged around it and all of them have their blending modes changed
in various ways and some have opacity reduced. I just played around
with them until I got the effect I wanted.
Halftone Clipping Mask Quick Bits by Erica Belton (both from
Yeah!!!!!! Congratulations! It's a great magazine. It was so exciting when we were in the US, to find one in A.C.Moore, to open it and see one of my layout in it! And that magazine is so full of inspiration. Can't wait till March :)
