Is there a way that you can create your own brushes in PSP7? If so how? Also when creating the corrygated paper effect is there a way to do more than 2 colours?

Oh another question Dodge and burn and overlays. Ive seen some really nice work with these effects but dont understand how to produce them

Thanks

dunno about PSP 7, but you can check File>Export>Custom Brush

Dodge lightens the colors in an area, Burn darkens them. Lighten and Darken Tools are similar, but uses more of a black and white effect. Try them both and see

Just run the brushes over the area to play, and observe the changes. Uesful for making shadows and highlights on an object

Thanks Emma. CHeked export custom brushes in PSP 7 it doesnt exist.

Also with dodge and burn can you just do portions of a photo and not the whole foto. I have an example I like Can I post it here from another website?

With the corrugated paper can you use more than 2 colours or would i need to do things differently?

Dodge and Burn is a brush, so you just brush it right where you wnat it. If it's that different in PSP 7, more liek a filter, then you mask off what you want changed using the Selection tool.

Valeri wrote the corrugated paper tutorial, so hopefully she'll pipe in here. But using just the light and dark makes it look more real. What other colors would you like to add?

Piping in....

The corrugated paper tutorial that I did uses gradients. Since it is on repeats, the multi colored gradients don't work correctly. However, you can still do a corrugated paper effect on patterned or multicolored paper. You will just need the jama 3d filter.

Creating Brushes in PSP is easy...take the image you want and resize to 500 pixels or smaller, open your brushes and at the bottom or side of where you choose the brush shape there is a tool that says create brush from selection. Do that, name it, and it should add. Then just play with the variances.

oh, yes, that's it, New Brush Tip. Wow, been awhile since I've made one in PSP!!! It's so sad when I have to look in my OWN classes to remember how to do something, and if it's something I don't teach I just FAW-get about it, LOL! :D

Does PSP7 have that icon in the brush menu?

Here is another thing for Emma to FAW-get about! In PSP7, your max brush size is 250 pixels, they upped it to 500 pixels in v8

Can't forget v7, never used it! I haven't made a brush in PSP since I sent you those two a few months ago for making twisted ribbons. You used them yet?

Another question about brushes...

I use PSP 9. A few moments ago I tried to add brushes (like in OnederfulBirthdayKit), but it give an error: this is an newer format and not supported.

Is there any hope I can use those brushes anyway?

tia!

Milk Jug, LOL! I've been a milk jug for almost 4 years with a short break between.

What extension is the filenmae of the brushes? Are they .abr? Those are for Adobe programs only. there's no way to convert or open those in PSP. You can get a psd image with the brush tips stamped on made in Adobe, and you can define your own brushes in PSP. but you'd need an Adobe friend to stamp it for you.

I just downloaded brushes the other day from cybia (http://www.cybia.co.uk/brushes.htm), they had the .abr extension and they imported just fine into PSP9. Here is the info they give on their site about .abr...

"Quote" This brush pack comes in *.abr format which should be compatible with ALL versions of Photoshop from version 3 upwards, including CS and Elements. Paint Shop Pro 7 can also use these brushes without any need for conversion. PSP 8 or 9 can "import" them to automatically generate the new format files needed for that version of the program.

I have used other sites also which have .abr extensions and I haven't had any problem with them???

Haley, do you have more information? I've never been able to import abr into PSP from anything newer than PS 6.

Perhpas these abr files are older. The new ones made in PS 7 or PS CS are too large to be imported. PS 7 or PSE 2 can't use brushes made in PS CS, even if they don't use any of the unsupported settings. They just won't open.

Emma, I do not have any more info on these, it is possible that they are older .abr files, but with the amount of the abr files on this site and like I said on some other sites I have downloaded abr brushes from. I just wanted it to be known that PSP does recognize "some" abr brushes, and old or not, if they are neat brushes they are worth having!! :p If they will not work in PSP it is usually written on the site where the brushes are located.
This one site in particular states that they do work in PSP.
That said I have ran across some abr brushes that will not work in PSP, but it also says that they are made strictly for Adobe.
For me it is really not that big of a deal because the brushes out there for PSP are just as good in quality, detail and quantity!! :)

PS. Just went and looked and this site is still being updating with new brushes it seems. Also the brushes I downloaded do not have the "look" of the older brushes (Do you know what I mean?) They are new style brushes, with the grunge look and stuff. Mainly the ones that you buy..$$$
I would say this is just one person that Adobe has not bought out yet, and he/she is still making .abr brushes that are compatable with both programs.
Just like the good-ole days!! hehe

Here are the installation notes from that site:
Quote:
Installation : Download the zip or sit files above, uncompress all the files to your chosen "Brushes" folder then run Photoshop and load the brush set you require from the brush tool options. PSP users may need to import the files using the "Custom Brush" option in the file menu. This is the basic procedure for installing brushes, but for more details please read the documentation that came with your graphics program.

That makes more sense. The creator is likely using PS 6 to make the new brushes, which are still compatible with Jasc. Sites that say they're exclusive to Adobe are likely made in PSE2,3, PS 7,CS

Since I have both, I just stamp my brush tips from Adobe onto an image, then open the psd file in PSP. Define my brushes and add any settings in there. Lots of people have multiple software, so even if they use PSP predominately, they can still open the Adobe one for this type of stuff.

Thanks, Trace!
