I'd love to go, and since I'm only a few (about 3) hours from Vegas, it would surely be a quick and easy trip for me.... but I need to check kids schedules and see what they have going on and when they return to school. So I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread, and on the kids schedules.

So the big question is - how much does it cost??? Sounds like something great to do!

Well, there is your cost of getting to Las Vegas - flight, car, whatever

There is your stay at the Mandalay bay - usually reduced rate for those going to the conference - (i think we paid about $130/night last year - something like that + taxes)...

And, the cost of the conference - (it can range from $698 to $450 depending on when you register-

Cheaper if you belong to NAPP.. if you don't - contact me.. and, i'll get you the info on that.).

They are just about to hold the Photoshop world in Orlando - it's basically the same - just for the east coast folks.. - once that is over - they will probably post exact rates for the Photoshop world in Vegas..

and, then the cost of your food - they don't serve anything..

And, then they have the EXPO hall with the latest and, greatest cool stuff.. hard to get out of there without spending something..

if you live in the area, last year they did sell one day passes.. so that's an option as well...

ok, we don't have the schedule for the Vegas Photoshop world but here's a link to the Orlando Photoshop world - it will only be available for a few days because it's getting ready to start on March 30th. The schedule may seem confusing because so many classes are running at the same time. But, this is what happens - they have what they call TRACKS - they have a Track for say Photography - and all the photography classes happen in that ballroom, and, a Track for Lightroom.. , Techniques, motion Graphics, the Creative Suite, etc.. And, these are the Classes...
There is also the Expo hall full of the latest and greatest gadgets, plug ins, and, books, dvds's, etc.. And, in the Expo they have classes going the entire time the Expo hall is open.

http://photoshopworld.com/schedule/ (http://photoshopworld.com/schedule/)

I will tell you Debbie, the Creative Suite Track is geared toward CS5 - but I took plenty of classes that had nothing to do with CS5 - like on typography, copyright, painting faces (yes she started in CS5 - then went to Corel Painter).. but you really didn't need either product to understand what she was doing.. etc. by that I mean you can understand the process of painting a bridal or child's face.
Personally I think you could get more out of it if you had CS5.. but you would still get a ton of information if you did not.. most of the information is transferable..

Wow! It does look overwhelming! Is it mostly for professionals? I have CS5, but have not installed it yet. Still just using PSE 7! Guess I'm really behind!

To answer the question - is it just for Professionals - NO.. neither PQ nor i are Professionals.

I have sold several photos - but I would never consider myself a professional. Someone just saw some photo restorations on my flickr page, and, wanted them for a book in one example.

Every level of photographer, graphic designer, motion graphic artist, illustrator, teacher (of all of the above), will be there. But, remember every one of them starts somewhere.

Here's what I found - the first year i went I had been putting off a huge photo restoration project. I went to the classes I needed and asked the questions I needed to get the project done - Photoshop world was the 1st week in September - I presented my daddy 300 fully restored photos by Christmas - 3 months later.

What really helped was getting to know the instructors - they are just regular people like you and I. After some of the classes - I would ask a few questions. They make themselves very available - after their classes - and, in the expo hall.

After I got my project done - I sent thank you's to the 2 that helped me the most

The next year I thanked them in person. And, they were just beaming with pride and, asked to see my portfolio - they were really happy they had helped me with this project. Chris Orwig told me - that for the most part they tape lessons, but they don't really get to hear feed back - well he got personal feedback from me. (And, he gave me a prize for my story)..

Matt K... gave me a prize too... pays to talk it up to the instructors..

But, I met all sorts of photographers.. and, learned some of their tricks like how do food photographers set up.. well, i know you can't possibly eat the food after they do their work..

You meet very interesting people from all over the world.. and learn what they do...

Or you can just listen to what they have in the classroooms..

you can do as much or as little as you want..

They (the photos) don't have to leave her home- do you have a high quality camera.

Take photos of the photos...

PQ does this all the time.. Take them outside - like to a porch - with natural light - early morning - late evening - no light directly on the photos. And, take photos of the photos. I'd place them on a background like a dark (lint free cloth). And, then you don't have to worry about what is around the photo.

PQ can probably offer more tips here..

or can you hook up your scanner to her computer - and, scan them at your mom's home - then create a dvd - to take to your home..

Two ways to get those photos..

I have done that with some pictures, but I have to wait till she wants to get them out and look at them. She is 94 and doesn't have a computer so that is not an option. I mention that I would like to look at pictures and she will usually say I'm not sure where they are and that she will have to dig them out some day! Sigh!!
She spends most of her day in bed and has to be in the mood to look at stuff. I do like your idea of using a dark cloth under the pictures. I will have to get one just in case.

Just make sure it's lint free (the black cloth).. I got mine at hobby lobby on sale on clearance... - so, you don't have to spend a lot of money.. - I do iron mine to get rid of the creases before i photo anything on it..

I know you can buy expensive photo backdrops.. but this works just as well..

I use the same cloth to place as a cover on my scanner - if i have something that is larger than say a photo - so that absolutely no light gets in to the scan bed.

so, it comes in handy..

I have a pure white cloth too..

I wonder if you can ask you mom... something like - I wish you could tell me stories about some of the people in the old photos, so i could pass the stories down to others in the family (don't know if you have kids.. but to my kids.. nieces, nephews..etc..)..

When my mother died.. she had different stacks of photos - unlabeled - that were at least 50 years old - most of the people in the photos I could immediately recognize..
Some, I needed the help of her Best Friend and, cousin.. Some, I scanned and not a single person on either side of the family can identify.. so sad.. because they were someone precious to her.. but, we will never know who they were. There was nothing to identify the person in the photo at all..

so, maybe if you told her you want the stories.. it might help.. I don't know..
my dad is close to that age.. and, somedays I can talk him into things, sometimes not at all..

just have the camera and cloth ready just in case.. And, a journal.. in case you don't know who is in the photo.

Okay, *if* we were to hold a crop during Photoshop World, when would work?? The conf runs Friday-Sunday. So would you want Thursday or Monday or a Sat afternoon or day? The FREE expo is Sat & Sun so it would be nice to crop Friday and leave Sat-Sun open for people to enjoy if they're looking for a free opportunity. But those paying for the PSW classes and such might really want to attend on Friday.
Help, asap! We might be able to make this work!

Woah! Back that bus up sista! No Adobe crop?!!!!!! If that is the case, I bet a lot of people would like a heads up and a chance to register for PSW. At least I would... :)

I've been wanting to go to Vegas so I'd love a Vegas crop with/without PSW. Of course, a SoCal crop would be even better - - ha ha ha! But I can't commit to anything yet...I may have come out of retirement by then and actually have to go to a real job!!!

Just an FYI PSW is very expensive..... - many here balk at the small amount we charge for a crop let along 5 or 600 dollars + your accommodation and food and spending money not that i would in any way say its not worth the money - though Ive not been and would love to go but its a lot more than a regular Adobe crop would be!!

Photoshop World costs $698 if you are not a member of NAPP and the hotel is $159 a night (plus tax).

PQ
04-09-2011, 06:14 PM
Lauren - you and I must have posted at the same time - I was thinking the same thing - everybody needs to know ahead of time how much PSW costs.

PQ
04-09-2011, 06:15 PM
At the end of PSW they give you a massive, phonebook sized manual filled with notes from every single class taught at PSW.

Lauren
04-09-2011, 06:16 PM
Thanks PQ - saved me going to look it up !!- I was planning to go one year when we were doing a tradeshow in Vegas (2007 from memory) but the timing was just out by about 2 weeks.... - back then it was $500 for NAPP members I think...
we did do a crop though from memory and I hosted our first ever photo walk -- where some of the flatgrannies disgraced themselves in the boxers of a model in a clothing store .....

PQ
04-09-2011, 06:17 PM
If you book your spot in PSW before August, you get $100 off......and if you are already a NAPP member, you get $100 off. If you have attended PSW before, you get $50. off.

PQ

So, it might cost you $700 to go, but I only have to pay $450. :D

Oh gosh! I was soooooooooo planning on doing PSW this year, especially if the DSP crop is there, but since my grandson is due Aug 1, I'm not sure I will want to leave here a month later! Wow, I just have been aware of this today reading everything. I would love to go to Las Vegas however, no way can I afford that kind of money! I am lucky if I can go to Adobe Crop.
I don't know how many of you are young and perhaps have jobs but when one is retired as I am and on a fixed income it makes it very difficult to do certain things such as this.
I can't afford the expensive version of Photoshop and have PSE.
Hope Adobe crop isn't eliminated entirely!

I might be able to make it for a crop in Vegas if its on Saturday, because I *think* DD moves into her dorm on Thursday or Friday. I'm only 3 hours from Vegas, so I can run up on Saturday if my plan works out the way I think it *might*. I doubt I'll be able to get to PSW though, would hate to spend the money and then end up having to missing a day of classes to get her moved in. I suppose she COULD do it alone or with her dad, but uhh.. I'm not really ready to cut the aprons strings like that just yet... maybe by her 3rd year of college I will be! LOL!!!

I had such fun at Adobe last year for my first crop...I'd love to make another one and Vegas sounds like a great place to have one. I would not be doing PSW for the price...maybe some of the free parts...but would definitely be a maybe for a DSP gathering....my dh's birthday falls during that time, so I'm not sure that I wouldn't feel too guilty about "Happy Birthday, see ya later, I'm off to Vegas".

Someone mentioned a crop right after all the PSW classes might be too overwhelming, and I think I'd agree! I'm sure you'll get so much info there that your mind will be mush. BUT many have asked specifically for a crop, so we'll see. Maybe some will choose to skip it, or some will come with mushy minds!
But really, if many are gathered and would have to miss an Adobe crop (which isn't a definite anyway), it would be nice to offer. Although some usuals for an Adobe crop might not be able to make Vegas. Just recognize we probably can't do both, so someone will surely be disappointed.

There is no cash and counseling offered here and that is what it would come under I believe. Boy that would help me a great deal if I got paid. I also think here in in AZ you are required to take classes in care. When could I possibly do this. I am so happy if I can attend the scrapbook thing in Las Vegas. Looking into respite care in case I need someone to stay with him while I am gone if I can afford it.

Thank you I appreciate your help. I live in Pinal county and they have different rules than Pima.<< Carti

Out here the requirements for an ihss worker are very specific......you need to be alive!!!>
Seriously, the requirements for an ihss worker are almost nothing!! Shawn can have whomever he wants as long as they are alive and have fingers for fingerprinting and can fill out a time sheet they are hired!!!!
<<Funny, sometimes I don't feel alive, I am so tired!>

Carti, I hope your able to find good resources and I cross my fingers for you that you/dh qualify for reimbursement or some sort of home health assistance! My FIL is in North Dakota, his wife takes care of him and she receives some sort of monthly income for her taking care of him. I assume it's an income based thing in order to qualify, and I don't know how much they make but I know it can't be much as all they receive is his monthly income from social security for permanent disability (he's stage 4 cancer). I know that when SHE was hospitalized for a fall she had, she didn't receive any money for home health for those two weeks since she wasn't taking care of him (she was in ICU), so she has to send in time sheets of some sort. Recently he has qualified for outside help to come in as well.. I think for 4 hours a week. It's to give her a break so she can rest, run and do errands, seek medical for herself, etc.

I hope your able to locate something like this for yourself as well as I know it's been very helpful to my in-laws.

Good that you got your registration, etc.
I was unable to go to social services cause I had to wait (almost all day for pickup wheel chair) I cannot lift wheel chair even a lite weight one to put in trunk and my husband is a big guy.
I will have to go next week. Thanks

Think I'll justvfollow the DSPeeps that know what they are doing!!!!!

I got mine, too! Hooray! I have already been pondering the classes.........I signed up for a preconference class also.

Speaking of knowing which way to go....it took me two days to figure out which way to turn after I got of the elevator in the hotel. That place is like a zoo and one slot machine pretty much looks like every other slot machine to me.:lol::rofl:

I was looking for reviews on Mandalay Bay Resort where we will be staying,
Some were good others not so good. Guess can't wait too long before making reservations cause some people had problems even tho they got there early, did not get the room they wanted, rooms not clean etc.
I hope we won't have a problem. Good thing they will waive resort fee otherwise I saw where it was $20.00 per night!
I checked out the restaurants and they are too expensive coffee $4.00 hope to find someplace to eat where we won't have to go too far for breakfast! Even the so called The Cafe is expensive.
I guess no more where Casinos use to charge as little as $5.00 but I guess that was a long, long time ago. :)

I usually bring packets of instant oatmeal however, I tried finding out if in the rooms they provide coffee machine? I would heat up the water and then pour in a cup mix in oatmeal. This is,suppose,to be 4 star hotel? You would think coffee machine woud be offered?lBeing diabetic I need to eat protein food.I always have some kind of bars with me also.
I guess that is one of my questions to ask when making reservations!
I am beginning to think if this is worth going, though sure would hate to miss this!

I think there is a free area you can wander around every day.
Remember though our party is Friday at 5pm and PSW ends at 4:30!!
You might not even need a room!! The media suite has places to sleep and we won't be done until 10 am Saturday!!!

Carti, That is probably a mistake on their part - left over from the last PSW World in Orlando. If you look at the top of the page the dates are Sept 7 - 9, 2011.

Just a typo. When you register, it says:
Expo Hours:
Wednesday, September 7– Closed to the Public
Thursday, September 8– 1:00pm to 5:00pm
Friday, September 9– 9:00am to 1:00pm

But thanks for letting all know the free expo passes are up and available now!

I'm sorry but the media room does NOT have places to sleep! If you plan to sleep, you will need a room. If you plan to stay up and eat chocolate all night, you won't. :D You could bring a sleeping bag and curl up on the floor in a corner, but I guarantee you'd be on a scrapbook page and uploaded to the gallery before you wake up.

http://i409.photobucket.com/albums/pp179/aladino2008/b6d17916.gif I am getting there on Saturday, September 3rd and staying until Sunday, September 11. Doug and Bia are coming with me. (They are leaving on Tuesday). On Sunday night we are going to see Lion King, and on Monday night we are going to see Cirque du Soleil Love. For my birthday my mother gave me a wad of $ and said to spend every penny of it in Las Vegas. It will be a challenge, but I think that I can do it. (I don't really like gambling, but I love going out to eat, drinking a little wine, and buying presents to take back home).

I am taking a preconference class on Tuesday (3D fundamentals) and I have paid to go to the after hours party on Wednesday.

Don't forget to look at the classes that are offered inside The Expo. Scott Kelby sets up a booth and offers classes continuously. (But don't touch him. He's mine :love1:).

ALSO, if you want to buy something inside the expo, buy it on day one.....that is the only day that non-PSW people cannot get in, so it is MUCH less crowded. After day one the lines in The Expo to purchase things are insane.

So not expecting to receive a packet from PSW. Hoping there will be plenty of information available at Mandalay Bay & Resort, like information board showing where stuff is?
Wonder if we will get anything from Margie.
