Several of us are excited about the Photoshop (and PSE) Books for Digital
Photographers written by Scott Kelby because they seemed to address what we
were looking for in how to correct photo problems after the picture comes
out of the camera. See the review here:
The
Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/place/pscsreview_lbmb.shtml)
We are the same people who buy lots of books and don't always work
our way through them. SO...
We decided to start up a reading club to work through the books together.
With the help of a few volunteers a schedule has been developed to get
through the books.
If you are interested in participating, here's the plan:
Find or purchase the get the book that relates to your program.
Margie will have the links set up soon so that you can purchase the books
through Amazon.com. Check here to find the links for the book you need.
Scott
Kelby Books (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/place/pscsreview_lbmb.shtml)
For PS 7, get The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers,
ISBN # 0-7357-1236-0.
For PS CS, get The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers,
ISBN # 0-7357-1411-8.
For PSE 3, get The Photoshop Elements 3 Book for Digital
Photographers, ISBN # 0-321-26905-5.
On Sunday night, May 8th, a new thread will be started for each version of
the book. Go to the thread for your book and get your reading assignment.
You'll have a week to work through it.
The fun part of this is that Scott Kelby gives you a link in the book so you
can download the photos he uses and do what he tells you step by step.
The schedule set up is going to keep all three groups working roughly
together. It will take 8 weeks to work through the book and by that time we
should all be experts in photo manipulation... right? :)
Your book club thread leaders are going to be:
PS 7 - Starling
PS CS - msmac_rn
PSE 3 - txminx
Remember we are going to be working through the book along with you. You
will use your threads to ask questions and get help, but don't expect any of
us to be the experts. The idea is that we will help each other out by
answering questions when we can.
I hope that you will join and work through these books. It should be fun!
Watch for the individual threads to open up on Sunday.

Sounds great.. I got the book a couple of week ago and was going to start working through it. I just got PSCS2 so am glad to have the CS book.
I am not taking a class this month so this will keep me working in the right directions.
sounds so fun!
DSP is so great about educating scrappers, thanks for coordinating this group, Denise!

Very tempting - I just bought his Down and Dirty Tricks with PSE3 book which is very cool (but I am guilty of not giving it the time it deserves). Maybe I'll check out the local library :-)

I'm in too. I've got the Down and Dirty Tricks and have been having fun with it and I'll get the Photoshop CS2 book which I guess means I'm going to upgrade to CS2..addicted to Photoshop! Ron and I are teaching a Digital Darkroom for Phographers summer class for the University of Wisconsin in July so this will be great to get some new tips and ideas for working on photos.
William -- I just saw the Kelby CS2 book at Amazon.

This sounds terrific. It's hard to find people to talk shop with around the house...it tends to create glassy eyed stares LOL! Thanks Denise!

At the time we put the schedule together the PS CS 2 book was not available... and at this point we still can't get our hands on the table of contents for it so that we can work out the schedule for that book too...
Our current schedule is based on the TOC's from the first three versions (PS 7, PS CS and PSE).
If someone has the PS CS 2 version of the book and can scan the TOC and email them to me I would really appreciate it. Then we can see how to incorporate the PS CS 2 version into our schedule. (Please don't type the TOC into this message board as that would violate policy.)
Thanks.

Wow. Lots of excitement over the book reading club. I'm so glad. Although I have Photoshop CS, I own the Version 7 book, so I will be starting the thread for Version 7. It is going to force me to actually pay attention to all of the parts of the book. That is a good thing. ;)
During the first week all of us will be working through the chapters about how the program is organized and what organization tools are in the program. So if you need to come into the thread in week two, that will still be doable.
Also, all of Scott Kelby's books can be read out of order. So if you don't start with us, you can join in at any time as long as you own one of the books.
By the way, last Sunday my local Borders had all four versions of the book on its shelves. That means all of them are in print. Do purchase the book that goes with the version of Photoshop you have. The easiest way to do that is to use Margie's links to get to the right amazon.com page.

This is terrific, Denise! I just upgraded to CS2 and had recently purchased the Kelby CS book. Nice that we can all work together on this. A nice bridge between the April class and hint, hint, hint, ;-) Emma/Rebecca/Whomever a new class later on. Thanks for pulling this together, Denise. It's a great idea.

I am almost ready.. Just got back from town and returned the CS book and got the cs2 ordered and it will be here by the end of the week... Can hardly wait to get it. I had just started reading the cs book last night. Glad I hadn't gotten any further so I could take it back...
This is a fantastic Idea!!!
Thanks

I'm in on this one! I've had the book, and i've actually used it for a few things, but I tend to use it as a need arises...I'd love to know those things without having to dig out the book to remember what to do!
Thanks for offering this! It's a great idea!
By coincidence my husband just bought this book on ebay last week! Maybe I will have to snag it (when it gets here!!!) and jump in with all you guys. Sounds like great motivation. I am looking forward to it.

i don't think he did a pse2 book? maybe it's too similar to pse or pse3 came out too fast? but i'd guess you could use the pse one and be fine. anyone know for sure? i only have pse3. tho i'm applying the pse3 book to ps cs also anyway! :)

Do the book for PSE 3. There might be a few things you won't be able to do with your version, but most of them should be available. Some of the hints for organizing, for example, might work for you in Picassa if you are using that. If you come across something in the book you don't have, and think it is something you would really like, it will also give you a good reason to upgrade when you are ready to do that.
And remember there will be a PSE 4 one of these days (in 6 months to a year probably). If you wait to upgrade to that, whatever you wanted in PSE 3 will still be there and your learning curve for that upgrad won't be so hard because you did the book.

WOW!!! Can't wait to get these books!!! You should see all my old Scott Kelby books, they are all highlighted and have all these little colored tags sticking out of them. Just like the good old college days :).

For those of us who have PSE2 (including me) there are some things that we don't have that will be covered in the PSE3 book as Starling said the organizer information can be done however you've been doing it previously (picassa, Adobe Photo Album, ACDsee, Microsoft)
A thirty day trial of PSE3 is available at http://www.adobe.com
When we get to the "meat" of the book - I will try to note what is or isn't available for PSE2 users and see if we can together figure out a solution.

Which book would you recommend, Scott Kelby or Richard Lynch? I would like one book to start and just wondering which would be the best one to buy for PSE3.
Thanks
jfricker
05-05-2005, 03:53 PM
I have not seen Richard Lynch's book, but I have Scott's book for PSE 3.0.
I love it, as he explains things very well and in language I can understand.
Also, starting May 8, there is going to be a book review on the forum of Scott's books and we are going to go through the book together, working on the pages as we go. I think this is going to be very helpful to be able to study it together and ask questions.
Just my opinion. but I have just started using the program recently, and Scott's :) book has been a big help to me.

The nice thing about ALL of Scott Kelby's books is that you don't have to read it in order. You can open it up at random at any page and you will be able to follow that tutorial.
We will be doing the books in order however, which might work out even better in the long run.

The first reading assignments will be posted on Sunday evening... don't stress if they aren't up there early in the morning... Remember it's Mother's Day and people are going to be busy... So we set a deadline of having the lesson posted by 10 PM ET on Sunday nights...
I'll give you a hint though.. we're going to be doing the books in the order of the chapters... so you can probably figure out where to start... Don't forget to read the introduction too.. so you can find out where to get his photos to work with.

Donna - you asked about a PSE 2.0 book. I know there is one because I have one on my bookshelf (by Scott Kelby). Have you checked Amazon to see if they still carry it....or your local library. I local library carries it and we can aske for an extended 6 week check out and then renew one time.
If you click on the link to the reviews here at DSP. The one for PS 2.0 is the one with the green cover. I went and double checked - he talks about 2.0 in that book.

Yes there is definately a PS2 book available
For PSE2 users -
Scott Kelby's book for you is
Photoshop Elements for Digital Photographers - ISBN - 0-735-71392-8
Follow along with us in the PSE3 Thread - your reading assignment for the week is posted there. We are basically covering both PSE2 and PSE3 in that thread so hope you will join us!

Purchase the book and jump in whenever - that's the fun of Kelby's books they don't "HAVE" to be read in order - we are doing them in order so that we achieve our goal - FINISH the book!
