What is the best way to create a chalked edge? I've used the chalk brush, lowered the opacity and applied a Gaussian blur. It's okay, but not great.
Anyone have a better way to get this cool effect?
Lauren has a tutorial here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/university/tutorials/ps_chalkedge.shtml) for creating a chalked edge in PS that I think we can duplicate in PSP. I'll keep looking, anyone else have ideas?

What is the "F" in PSP? Do we have an "inner glow"? This was Greek to me. I'll look around for a tut, too.

lol Jewel I had exactly the same question for Pam... do you have to select bits of the layer below on a new layer sort of modify contract and then just work on that new selected bit ??? I could get a graduated colour effect ??
Any ideas ??
f icon is PS only. No INner glow, PSP doesnt' have layer styles.
I use my magic wand to Select All Opaque and click on my object (selects all the opaque pixels on a layer). Then Selection>Modify>Contract then Feather a lot of pixels (depends on size, the preview helps you determine how many pixels to srhink or feather the selection)
ON a new layer, fill with brown or whatever color. Change the Layer Blending Mode to somthing you like (scroll through them all), lower layer opacity if needed.
I also will Selection>Edit and run some filters on the selection, the exit Edit Mode and then fill. The filters make the selection streaky, spotty, wahtever. You can also paint on the selection whyile in Edit mode too. Pretty cool feature!

I like the final effect.

I also didn't know what you meant by exit Edit Mode and then fill.
Jewel, check Lesson 1 in the PSP 130 class for how to resize a selection using Edit and the Deform Tool. After resizing, you have to Exit Edit Selection mode to return it to a selection.
Same thing here. After painting on it or running a filter on it, exit Edit Selection mode and then fill the selection with the brown color.
so back up on the first instructions to the point where you make the selection, shrink, and feather it. Instead of filling with brown on a new layer, first use the Edit Selection mode to distress the selection.
Try some brush stroke filters, anything that'll muck it up a little. Basically what you did by using the Smudge brush on the brown layer, just messing it up before filling with color.
Are you doing this around an entire image, or just one layer on the layout?

do you mean something like this tag in this freebie pack?

If that is what you mean, I think I can try to explain it, otherwise, I will let you get back to your regularly scheduled thread :)

Ok.. I can work up a tutorial with screen shots later, but it will be for advanced users of PSP.
The quick and dirty is that I made the tag shape and give it a really good rough texture. I select the tag and make a new layer. On the new layer, I paint the chalk on around the edges with the regular brush. It will be thick, but thats ok because we are going to blend with the smudge brush. You will want a rough brush with a farily low opacity, also you need to lower the density as well. Now just play around with smudging until you blend the "chalk" (remember the undo is your friend and you can also add more "chalk" too). Play with the blending modes too, sometimes the "burn" works really well, or luminance, just all depends. It is not quick and easy method, but I like it. Its more like you really chalked it (IMO)
If none of that makes sense, let me know. I am at work right now, so I can't add any more to this until I get home tonight.
Hope this helps!!

Valeri, I understand every word you wrote and also understand why I wasn't getting the effect I wanted. I'll try this and also finish Emma's instructions for a layout I'm working on right now.
THANK YOU!!!
