my almost 4 year old doesn't know his letters except for X, O and sometimes J. but he knows everything about pirates. i thought i'd make up a simple pirate alphabet book.

i've come up with lots of words for the different letters, but i'm stumped on good pirate words appropriate for my youngster for E, U, V, and Z. my N and R are also pretty weak, so i'd love suggestions for those as well.

can you help?

for those who are curious about what words work for the rest of the letters, here's my list.
Anchor, Argh, Arrows
Bow
Captain, Caribbean, Cannonball, Cannon, Cape
Dig
E
Fight
Gold, Gun
Hammock, Hat, Hook
Island
Jewels, Jail, Jolly Roger
King
Land Ho!
Matey
Nightwatch, Necklace
Ocean
Pirate
Quiver
Ring
Seas, Ship, Slingshot (kids' suggestion), Sash, "Shiver me timbers," Sword, Skull and crossbones, Swashbuckler
Treasure Chest
U
V
Walk the Plank
X marks the spot
Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
Z

Does the letter have to be the 1st letter of the word? If it doesn't, then how about:

r - aRR (an exclamation)
v - scurVy ... or ... shiVer me timbers

R could be Rigging. As in the ropes holding the sails.

v - vessel, vagabond?

This sounds like a wonderful, creative project. Good luck! Can't wait to see your layouts posted.

I know that I am behind in getting to the list, but just in case someone else is looking to do the same, I have a few more scurvy suggestions!
U - Unearth, or Underground (as in underground cavern)
R - ransom, Ringleader - The Ringleader of the Rebels demanded a Ransom for the Return of the Ring
Q - Quest; quell (as in quell the rebellion)
E - pieces of Eight (as the parrot cries: "pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!")
V - Vest
Z - "Zounds!" Zoran cried with zest!
M - the Mate at the Mast held back the Mutiny

When my boys were learning to read, we had a set of Pirate story Readers... but I haven't had a chance to reference them for this list.... my kids learned to read 20 years ago!-

i finished my pirate book for my son.

even though i loved e is for eyepatch, i thought that since eyepatch starts with the "i" sounds, it wouldn't really catch my 4 year old. i used "eel" instead.

i used "u" is for "under water" and "v" is for "violent" and "z" is for "zipper." i just couldn't come up with a great z word. argh!

thanks for the help; i appreciated it!

Karen, just saw this thread, and I wanted to say that was a great idea tapping into something your son loves to teach him something he needs. Bravo!
