Here's the quick class on torn edges from Lauren Bavin's chat at DSP today. It's also in the list of quick classes so you can find it later.

i am using PSE 2.0
ok ... i have some of the steps done ... looks ok so far.
so now i am at the "very tiny bevel" point.
how do i do this.
i know how to do layer styles ... but i would not call this a VERY TINY BEVEL. i am not sure i can get a VERY TINY DROP SHADOW either.
sorry ... i must just be a dork!
thanks!
mike
Mike, in PSE go ahead and add the huge effects in the standard choices. After they're applied you can edit them by double clicking the little "f" icon next to the layer name. It will let you change a few basic settings.
I haven't run this tutorial in PSE yet, so let me know if this gives you fits and I'll open the program and check for sure!
BTW, Lauren, AWESOME technique, ingenious! The most realistic tear I've seen yet (and I've been wondering how you do that! Did you invent this or adapt it or...I need to sign up for your class!)

Thanks Emma for that - I never use the default styles for bevel and shadow - always create my own by pressing the little "f" .
Emma I created that method myself - actually I created it way back months and months ago but I have been improving it over time
Are there default styles you can apply in PS without going into the dialog box? It's been awhile since I used 7, maybe that feature is different than CS.
Choosing any effect opens the dialog box: you can click the effect and use the default settings, but it always opens the box because you never want the defaults!
In PSE you have to apply a default style first, then go to edit it, but the editable attributes are limited.

Yes you can click on a sytle from the styles palette and it will apply it for you - Its a long time since I used pse so I will have to go look up the styles palette there

I would say, oh duh, Styles palette, but I just don't use it...
Just discovered all those palettes the other day and organized them and starting playing a little, so it's a good reminder to me to look again! Always something new to learn and another way to do something! Ain't it Great!
But I digress from paper tearing!

Lauren-
Ive tried your tutorial but just cant seem to master it. Are you going to cover this in the elements class?
Or maybe you can tell me which brush you use to create the torn edge and which texture you add to it. also, when you say delete the unwanted background paper- how are you doing that? How did you add extra color on the paper layer?
Im sorry- too many questions but I really like this look- its the most realistic that Ive seen!
Thanks!

Are you going to cover this in the elements class?
No not this time - the class is purely elements rather than paper effects
Or maybe you can tell me which brush you use to create the torn edge and which texture you add to it.
Well I use a different brush and texture each time depending on what look I am going for - it must be a rough edged brush tho - just run through your brushes and find one that doesnt have straight edges- as for texture you want a texture which is not too rough - play with several and see the differences
when you say delete the unwanted background paper- how are you doing that?
You do that by using your magic wand on the side of the torn edge layer to select that side - then drop down to the paper layer and delete
How did you add extra color on the paper layer?
What extra colour??- I didnt change the colour of the paper layer - if you are referring to the brown shade under the torn edges - I just popped another layer underneath to show up the effect better
Im sorry- too many questions but I really like this look
Questions are fine - you cant learn if you dont ask!!!!!!- and the tutorial was written very quickly!!!

one thing that might help me is SUGGESTED NUMBERS
i am working on it now and when you say SMALL bevel ... the norm is 5 pixels i think, so would SMALL be 1?
also, on opacity ... oops ... i see you did say 10 - 30%
of course we would use whichever numbers we wanted, but a guideline to start with would be good.
btw ... mine still doesn't look like torn paper! : (
but i am still trying!

the trouble with numbers is that it really depends on so many variables - if you adjust the bevel - you then need to adjust the texture as well - so its all a matter of playing till you get the right look!!!

Oh I think I use one of the brushes that come supplied in the default brushes- Try one of the chalk brushes - you may need to go and change the settings - adjust the spacing and the angle but it will work just fine
