View Full Version : PS Album ?? - Organizing Photos

Hello. I have the trial version of PS Album (I plan to purchase the complete version soon as a combo with PS Elements). Anyway....
I have been scanning a huge # of old photos that I borrowed from my parents. I have simply been scanning them into the program and then tagging them to identify the people/place.... etc.
The problem is... I have MANY, MANY photos... some from my mom's side, some from my dad's, some of DHs paternal side, DHs maternal side...
Should I organize them into folders or will this confuse the program since I have already scanned them? How do I go about moving them into folders and still be able to access them?
I hope my question makes sense... I am still new to the program and am learning as I progress.
Thank you!
Lauren

Im not 100% sure on this but I think you can do the organising from within the album programme - you can add tags and things to each photo and can move them into different folders ( I could be wrong on this but i THINK you can)

I use this program and you can add unlimited tags to each photo making a specific search very easy. However, I don't know anything about folders - don't have the program here so can't check, but I don't think there are folders. You can create a different "album" for different things, for example, I have an album for photographs and another for elements. HTH

Are you talking about organizing in folders on your hard drive? I still organize in folders on my hard drive - it doesn't confuse PS Album. One of the nice things is you can search your hard drive for any images to bring into PS Album. Once pictures are in PS Album, it actually will tell you where the picture is physically located on your hard drive.
I do believe you can create multiple albums too - but haven't done that yet. I definitely use the tags and create my own. I put multiple tags on the same photo so I can search by event, people, place etc.
Hope this helps!

I have this album and would like to start getting my photos and elements more organized.
My question is: If I have a pic or element in an album already, then move it to another folder...how much have I confused the program? Or should I just complete organizing my elements into folders before I make albums?confused:
Thanks,

I use the album for my elements as well and have had no problems if I move anything from one file to another. The system will locate it in the new file.
Hope that helps.

the long road to where ever you want to be (computer 7734 maybe)
WOW (words of Woisdom) - and I don't have much, so pay attention -
*PSA4 was ok; but,I was on the beta team for PSA5 and they messed it up.The designers had numerous complants about the amount of resouces the program uses and of it crashing computers. They did nothing about it.. every new version including the last of the beta had the same complaints. Also, I you want to customize a layout, you need to know some DHTML.
*Never, never and I repeat never spend money on PSP Elements! :( I am very sorry if any of you already have. You can buy the exact same product (in smaller packaging) for about half the price  from the source, cottage arts (http://www.cottagearts.net) I am not jocking, these are the exact same CD's Jasc has evidently purchased a license and just repackaged them! I learned the hard way, before I realized what I had done and got around for calling for an RA from Jasc, I was past my 30 grace period. such is life... but, if you really must have the Jasc label send me a private email.

just want to cataolg your pictures you can do what I think Lauren is suggesting, using MS Access or Excel.
I dont catalog. My computer is one giant fileing cabinet. I have folders with subfolders that have subfolders LOL
For example:
*My Scrapbooking Folder has Subfolders for all my resources
the Resource Folders all have Subfolders for the designers
the Designer Folders have Subfolders for Kits or groups. Individual items are just in that designers main folder. (And yes Lauren, if you are reading this, I do probably have three different folders for your work - it helps me to remember where I got it)
*My Pictures folder has Subfolders for all the individual artists I have collected
(this helps with copyright info) Among others also it also has a church subfolder and a family Subfolder.
the Church Folder has Subfolders for organizations and callings and each of those have subfolders for resources, tasks, events, etc.
I have a similiar set up in the Docs folder. If I were smart I would put a shortcut to the corresonding graphics folder in the doc folder and vis verse.
In the church folders i have crossed filed some things because they could be pertainent to different groups.
the Family folder has Subfolders for each suname.
They have Subfolders by occassion and date.
If it is a mixed surname event I just file them by occassion and include the date in the title ie. justs bday 32604 I suppose I could cross file them but basicly I am lazy!
The Family folder also has a Subfolder for my grandson (cuz he is special he gets his own) and it has subfolders by date.
This probably sounds confussing to you, bt it is very logical to me. You just need to come up with a system that makes sense to you. (BTW - my Bishop is an accountant and he asked me to come set up his home files for him)
*If you are real ambitious I belive you can catalog these in MS Access or Excel, giving each picture a list of "key" words. You can then serch the database by keyword. I know some people put their pic directly into the DB and others use thumbnails with links. Now if you want to find a picture of Sally, you type in "Sally" and every picture of her comes up - or if you are really good you could just get sally's birthday pictures by tying "sally birthday"
* or (if you want) you could go to (I have to tell you that I this point I have just retyped everything above twice because I lost it... so ho w bright am I? ) http://www.xequte.com/ and down load their free version of smartpix manager. While you are there get a copy of Digi Album.. but I have to tell you cataloging programs like this use a lot of resources that is one of the problems with PSA5.. it does catalog, but in return it drains your system and you crash.
Whew! I am long winded on sometimes! So Sorry!

I just want to make sure I'm understanding this, as I was considering getting Photoshop Album (I think that's what it is called, right?) for organizing my photos: are you saying the latest version of this program is not good? I think I just got confused because I'm not sure what is meant by PSP Elements - is that a version of Paint Shop Pro or is that a form of Photoshop Album? OK - am I totally confused???

be used with just about any graphics program, I think! definately PSP and PSA..
and the ABC and CFA... oh and the MBT too! ;)
Seriously though, up untill the final version of PSA5.0 Beta ther was no way to utilize your PSP Elements (Templates) unless you know some DHTML. You could put the pictures of the individula elements on your hard drive and possibly use tham that way with PSA (isn't that airline out of business? hmmm) We didn't get to preview the final vesrion before it went public like they told us we would, so I don't know if they ever fixed that... they said they were working on it... but up to the week of launch, no changes...
Now for the clarification...
Yes we are talking about the same thing! I however probably confussed the issue by saying PSP Elements... I think technicly they call them scrapbooking "EXTRAS". There are 7 CD's each bearing the title Scrapbooking Edition # - follewed by the original Cottage Arts name for the CD
ie. Scrapbooking Edition 5 - Simply Fun. Now if you go to the jasc site - extras-scrapbooking etc. you can view the samples Ok now go to Cottage Arts - shopping- find the name of the same CD (in this case simply fun) and view the samples.. deja vu!
Oh and I must be in LALA land, because they ae listed at both sites for $29.99 jassc is currently having a sale $19.95 which is still more than cottage arts incentive price... One such incentive... the one I took.. buy 4 cs's get 2 free that comes aut to roughly $18.00 each (considering I paid $29.99 X2 at jasc that's a considerable savings... besides now I have duplicates of 2 CD's)
PSP - Paint SHop Pro
PSA - Paint SHop Album
This probably as clear as mud eh?

I am kinda new to digital scrapbooking ( I did some 10years ago before it was mainstream) but have just recently been delving into it in a much larger scale. At the same time we have gotten a new computer so I decided it was important to set things up properly and MAYBE I will continue it. 8-)
I had version 1 of the adobe album but it crashed my system at the time (before the first patch) so never worked with it. I got Jasc album software as a free/after rebate deal at Christmas time so that is what I am using (version 4)
My plan when downloading, buying, sharing, creating, etc is to save the files in folders that they are associated :
Scrapbooking > art and layouts for inspiration
> quick crop stuff
> purchased
> fonts
> to be reviewed (and filed)
> tutorials
(and the big folder) elements
The elements folder has subfolders for things like alphabets, tags, charms, etc and some folders for specific groups that I share with but this is also where I have folders for specific artists so I can keep all of their shares together. I also have some folders that are for a specific kit so that all the elements, papers, tags etc for that kit are together along with the info for credit.
The items in the upper folder to be reviewed are my most recent downloads. Within the Album software I can look them over, assign keyword/tags to them AND move them to the appropriate subfolder. When the move is done within the Album software the keyword/tags travel with the file.
NOw the Album software is what I use to find the actual graphics. By assigning keyword/tags to each 'element' I can call up what I want no matter what subfolder it is in. So when I look for background papers it will call up those in kits, artist's folders my own creations folder, and the the backgrounds folder. By seeing where it came from I can determine where credit should go (hopefully, unfortunately not everyone puts their name to the files)
I think this system is a workable one, of course I haven't been at it long so time will tell. I would love to hear from others about what works for them.
hugs
