Hi!
I am using PSP 8. I was using a trial version that came on my Dell, but the trial ran out so I purchased a new program (PSP 8) from Amazon, and installed it. Now it runs so s.l.o.w.l.y ... it is driving me nuts!
I thought that I read somewhere how make PSP run more efficiently. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
Brenda

I don't use PSP - but I think you need to get a patch. Go to Jasc's website and I'm sure you can find it there :)

I use Paint Shop Pro and the one things I have noticed is that when you edit pics, it keeps the last version in the clip board, the more pics you have open and/or the more stuff you do to it, will accumulate more volume in the clipboard causing my program to run extremely slow.
Don't know if that is the problem your having but thought I would share just in case.
I now save every few changes with it's own name, step 3, step 5 so on and so forth, and clear the clip board, it keeps the program running great.
Hope it helps

Mine runs slowly as well but I thought it was because of my ancient computer. I empty the clipboard frequently and try to keep as few windows open as possible. It's really a problem when working with text. I could just pull my hair out sometimes, this is usually when it chooses to crash too. That's the main reason I don't do much journaling on my layouts, LOL.

I was just reading threads and ran across this...toward the end it tells how to check your file size. Hope this helps..

PSP runs slowly
#1 issue with PSP, most commonly asked question perhaps
1. If your system has less than 512mb RAM, you're toast. You want closer to 1G, as much as you can afford
If you're decked out as much as you can afford and it's still not good enough, then you have to close everything down to work. Ctrl-alt-del and look at processes to see what's eating you up. Get offline, close browsers, chat, anything in the background.
2. Don't work in pixels/centimeter! When you create a new image, Use 200 pixels/INCH, or 80pixels/cm. 300ppi is just asking for suicide attempts, or perhaps at least baldness...and try working in 10x10 rather than 12x12. I do, it prints lovely at 12x12 too.
3. Video card, the secret of PSP :D Many people have little 8-bit cards. Get something like 128-bit, make sure your existing monitor and motherboard can stand it. A faster card means faster graphics processing. Get as much as you can afford and your existing or upgraded system can handle
4. Faster hardware that helps is a CPU with over 7k RPM, 10k is nice! A new hard drive won't help since PSP doesn't use empty HD space as RAM (virutal memory).
5. Save every few minutes in prep for the inevitable crash! If your system is nice, this won't happen. If it's not, you get prepared. You can enable auto-save, but it slows things down a bit. Disable if you need every last drop of processing, and save often
6. Disable Redo function in File>Preferences. Lower the undo buffer to a smaller number of mb.
7. During heavy operations, just go take a potty-break, and see it as a built-in blessing as a hint to hug your babies. Don't get frustrated.
hth! PSP ran like eye-ball-poking slow for me at first, but when I started doing these things and upgraded my hardware, I can run PSP, PS, PSE, chat, Dreamweaver all at once. It's not PSP, it's your settings and your system. Let us know if this helps!

Thanks Emma, I will try those suggestions.
How can I tell how much RAM I have? And what video card I have? My computer is 5 years old (at least) with a celeron processor  so I guess I should be happy it runs at all, LOL.
Hopefully will have a new computer by the end of the year. I just have to nurse this one along till then. :o
In MS, right click on My Computer and choose Properties>General, you can see whatcha got in there, type of CPU and how much RAM
For video card, right click on the desktop and choose Properties>Settings>Advanced>Adaptor to see the name and type of the card. Under the Memory Size is the bits you have on it.
AND if you haven't done system maintenance like virus and spyware scans, and defragging the HD, you need to. It'll help.

Oh, I love you guys!
I have been everywhere on the web, looking for an answer! PSP support was polite, but their suggestions didn't help.
I checked, and it was set pixels/cm, so I changed it, and tada! it's running better! I am so psyched! I hadn't scrapbooked in a LOOOONG time b/c of this - guess what I'll be doing today!
Thank you!
Brenda :D
I'm SO glad this helped. I had the px/cm problem, and spent a LONG time w/ Jasc about why my software was so slow (found the answer on this board too). I still had to upgrade my hardware, but at least I could USE PSP while I was waiting for the upgrade. It's really a joy now, nice and speedy.

WTG Emma!!! Love your statement: "It's not PSP, it's your settings and your system."
160GB HD
1 gig Ram
256MB Video card
My whole system is huge, I am fortunate enough that my small web design business, buys me a new computer and most all of the computer toys that make my life fun and interesting!! ;o)
PSP9 has never shut down on me, it never has given me one problem with rendering anything.
I started using PSP9 on a 6 year old computer and I knew what the problem was...me and my old computer, 256Ram, small video card and any change to the large image took about 1/2 hours!!! I knew I was below the recommend system requirements. Once I got my new computer, I can run multiple programs, listen to music, download files and still play around and work in PSP9.
PSP9 also supposedly runs smoother then PSP8, this is something I have read frequently, I do not know what they changed!!
I went from PSP6 to PSP9 and I love every minute of it!!! So many new tools and toys to play with and learn!! :p

WOw, Am I glad I found this thread!
EMma you Rock!
I am waiting for my Photoshop and I downloaded PSP9 trial... I drove me nuts... SOOOOOOO SLOOOWWW
Anyways, How do I change the setting of pixel/inch to something else? I can only choose between pixel/inch or Pixel/cm.
Thanks,

You want to keep it at pixel/inch, Pixel/cm really slows down the process and PSP.
Again however if you are running under the minimum system requirements for PSP, it is going to be ssllllloooooowww as would most programs on a older computer. It is like asking the old model T to run 80mph on a super highway, just ain't happening!!

Thanks will try those suggestions and se how it goes!
Does 80 pixels/cm make PSP run more slowly? That's equivalent to 200 pixels/inch, so it should be the same. I haven't noticed any difference personally, and for metric users it might be easier to use cm.
Dagi, try 80ppcm and see how you like that.

Where the problem usually lays is that people having trouble with pixel/inch vs pixel/cm is that they do not notice this setting and are using 300 pixel/cm instead of using a correct number when using the metric system!! ;)
If people use metric then it is most helpful to them, since most of the USA uses standard that is how we measure and think about measurements!!
Sure wish I would have paid attention in Math class when they tried to teach us metric!! Guess I felt too old to get it by then!! All greek!! :D
You guys. thanks. I did LOs yesterday and it went very well! That setting change and the changes in the undo list really made a difference.
