Maybe this is only new to me but maybe others were not aware of it either.
XP has a hidden program that allows you to alter any of the characters of the fonts in your windows folder or to even create your own characters. Go to http://www.masteryourcomputer.com/
and under "Tips 'N Tricks" click on the link for "Such a Character! - Private Character Editor" and it will give you screen shots. Note that it says there will be more info on the program in future issues of the Learning Curve newsletter. I think this is so awesome and can't figure out why Microsoft includes these neat things and then decides to hide them.
It enables you to create characters for fonts that have limited sets and could be used to make all kinds of dings.

Hmmm...I wonder if this would be useful for foreing language scrappers who want to use fonts without the special characters...??? Whaddya think?

I'll have to go take a peek, sounds like fun! Thanks for the tip
