Here is my super-easy, mega-fast, ultra-simple tutorial for making a black-and-white with color-midtone photo. There are many ways to do this, I know, this is just a super-simple way. Enjoy!
Open an image.
Make it black and white.
Increase colors.
Add a new layer.
Fill new layer with color.
Make color layer "overlay".
Adjust opacity of color layer to your liking.
You're done!

Sorry, I am using PSP8. When we click IMAGE > GRAYSCALE for the black and white effect, it lowers the number of colors on the palette. I said to increase the numbers because so you can use colors again, not just shades of gray.
You may not have to do that in PS or if you use another method to make your photo b/w.
HTH?

here is a version of your great tutorial for the PS. It's identical to yours except for the "increase color" step and it works beautifully! TFS!
* Open an image.
* Desaturate
* Create a new layer
* Fill new layer with color.
* Make color layer "overlay".
* Adjust opacity of color layer to your liking.
* You're done!

These are my favorite tutorials..quick and easy..thanks Jenna :D
Great Jenna, thanks. I've always used the "colorize" in PSP (under hue and saturation) which also allows me to change the hue and then how bright or muted I want it to be. Of course this was before learning different uses for layers.
