View Full Version : Did you know? . . . PSP tips

I thought I'd start a thread where PSP users could share tips and tricks we learned that others may want to know.
Did you know that you can make a chenille ribbon by selecting two different colors for your foreground and background color and selecting your paint brush tool, then clicking the Preset drop down menu and choosing "Chenille"?
Did you know that you can make a circle frame element from a linear element? I made a tri-chenille ribbon and made it into a lei. First I deformed the ribbon in a 12x12 file so it was about 3x normal size. Then I chose "Effects">Polar Coordinates. Settings: Rectangular to Polar, Wrap. Voila! A lei!
Hope to see lots of "did you knows?" in this thread!
btw - I use PSP8

Great idea Stacey. Thanks for starting this.

Hi,
I just had this happen to me. I made a tube from a tut and when I exported it I forgot to remove the selection and it crashed PSP 9. I had to download a 'zapjasc' file and remove the registry settings. It was a pain because I lost all my custom toolbars and file location settings, BUT I didn't have to reinstall the whole program!! Anyway just a warning!!

btw - I use PSP8Stumbled across this today. I don't have the "Chenille" preset. When you have time how about posting the code. You will need to use the the php tag, since they are indent and paragraph specific. I learned this the hard way, LOL.

I don't know how to post the PSP code - teach me the hard way and I'll post it!

Use My Computer to go to preset, right click on preset, open with Wordpad, edit, select all, edit, copy, http://img371.imageshack.us/img371/4931/image877ek.jpg. The code is in red, use exactly as is - no spaces. The code tags do not work properly here so this is the only way I can show you.
Ok, that is your programming lesson for the day, LOL.
Edit: Oh, that word is paste, but I'm not going to redo the .jpg, LOL

Gizmo, I wish you were here. I cannot find it in my presets. Can I write all the settings down in the thread instead?

Look here:
C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 9\Presets
except you will probably have Paint Shop Pro 8
I would think that its name would be named some like this:
Preset_PaintBrush_Chenille.PspScript
If not nevermind I have also asked on another board, will be able to get someone to do it for me -- LOL

Oh, good - cuz that's where I looked and it wasn't there; wasn't in my docs either.

And now my contribution to the thread.
Making Preset Shapes From Dingbat Fonts (http://suzshook.topcities.com/8scripts/ss-MakingPresetShapes.htm)
This script will convert an entire Digbat Font into Preset Shapes. The only problem I ran into as a v.9 user is that I had to make sure I had last used the font I wanted to convert. The script does ask for the font you want, but I think it was written for v.8 and it doesn't hold, always reverts to last font used. Outside of that works perfectly.

WOW, was lead to THIS SITE (http://solarraven.com/PJs-psp8stuff.html), now not only do I have Chenille, I have barbed wire, cross stitch, fibers, and tons more. If you use this site make sure put the files in the correct folders.
I know someone who would love the fairy dust brush and preset, LOL.

Great idea........
Even though I've had PSP for some time, I find there are so many things it can do, if I only knew how.
The site Gizmo posted is a great one. I had forgotten that is where I got my chenille btushes from a long time ago.
Oh the font to preset is a great idea. I have tons of ding fonts that would be great for this.
1 tip I have is that on some of the filters(scripts),specifically the ones for making pictures into drawings. You have to use them on the picture while it is still a .jpg or it doesn't recognize the file format.
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to learn more, that's for sure.

Did you know that there is a discussion being held on PSP X on PSPUG (http://www.pspug.org/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b=gen1,m=1125807772,s=4) by one of the members who has his copy. This is a site specifically for PSP users, it is not a scrapping site.

Is it just me, or does it seem like PSP X was totally sudden? I mean, I feel like we just got 9 recently, and I haven't even seen beta versions of PSP X or anything like that. I've been using PSP since version 5, and I don't remember any of the other versions being this fast!

There are quite a few discussions about this elsewhere. The conscience of opinion seems to be that the new owners wanted to put their stamp on it. Also, if you have seen screen shots, it is really taking on a Photoshop look.
When I first heard about it, I said I'd wait for 11, but after reading some of the reviews, well I may have changed my mind.

Mine is on order - they sold me with some of the photo corrections. But this was before others started getting their copies and commenting on it. So we shall see. And yes, it has been quick. I just got version 9 at Christmas time.

Thanks for the tips on Chenille Stacey, I hadn't tried that. It forced me to have a look at the others. You can get a great effect with the PomPom preset too!
Another script I've enjoyed is from SuzPlace - same as GizmoBird pointed out for the vector shapes from Dings. Here (http://suzshook.topcities.com/8scripts/ss-PlaidGenerator.htm), she has a plaid generator -- which works great for unique backgrounds.

Oooh, Pam, I really like that plaid generator. it was very easy to "install" too. I have another plaid generator (Plaid Lite) that I actually paid real money for, but this one is much better for a quick plaid. I guess they're a little different, as Plaid Lite (Name Suppressed-forget how much it was) takes a photo or element and creates a plaid out of the colors. It can be kind of slow, though. It's very nice for a coordinating background. Thanks!

Thinking ahead to that gift giving time, I thought I'd repost this CALENDAR SCRIPT (http://members.home.nl/j.backer/steps/calendar/calendar.html). I had used it to create a BOOKMARK (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=47793&cat=500&page=2), but could be used to put all months on a 2006 calendar with that special picture. For v.8 & 9 only.
To create a rope similar to the chenille that Stacey described in the first post of this thread, you can create and use a tube! Check out this website page (http://pspclass.ccsite.net/psptutors/rwbrope.htm) for the details -- then use your imagination -- fluffy circles could create a chenille or yarn - and you can experiment with color choices also.
Check out the other tutorials there also -- I especially liked the one showing how to "puff up" areas like a quilt (in the Quick Quilt tutorial).
OK, one more (I'm cleaning out and/or sorting pages I've saved from the Internet and found many on PSP tips). This one is a Simple Vector Text Trick (http://pixelnook.home.comcast.net/SimpleVectorTextTrick.htm) - for interesting text effects.

Hey, that calendar script is great. I often script regularly used series of functions, so I have tons of scripts I've made myself, but I haven't downloaded very many.

Stacey, I come up with a circular lei alright, but it doesn't "wrap", that is, if what you mean by "wrap" it ends up like your tri-color twisted lei in your hawaii kit. Is that what I'm supposed to be achieving?
thanks

Elisabeth, that's the goal. Did it not work?

Hmm... no. So tell me where the individual leis are supposed to be. Next to each other on the same layer? Or different layers? I laid out three diff. color chenille strips, then did the polar thing, selecting wrap. It circled them, but didn't wrap the colors together, they were nicely neatly next to each other.
Thanks Stacey!

Z - I conveniently forget details . . . . you do have to do a little prep work first. I drew the chenille lines kinda wavy, one at a time, layering them. (Think of Val's String of Pearls freebie with the chenille, pearls and ribbon - how they overlaid each other.) Then I erased over little bits of them to make them look like a braid. Took some fiddling - actually lots - I'm very new to element creation. Then I merged the visible layers. Then I did the warp thing. I did have to paint a little bit on this image to get the two ends to connect.

Oh! Okay. No, that I can do. At first I thought the 'polar' effect would "wrap" them up like your final product. See where I got lost in the wording? I thought they would wrap around each other. Silly me.
Thanks once again. Now I'm clear.

Emma revived the Tip Tuesday thread, so I thought I'd revive the PSP one.
DID YOU KNOW in PSPX that you can change the color of your vector shape or line by clicking on the layer, selecting the Edit mode arrow (if you have the toolbar up) or right clicking and selecting Edit, then merely clicking on the colors in your materials palette. I wish it was that easy to recolor vector text!

This is great! I'm new to Digital Scrapbooking and I am using Paint Shop Pro so I am very excited to see this thread. I currently have version 7, but I know that they have released 10 now. What are the advantages to upgrading to this version?
