Have you got someone here at DSP you admire or have a friendship with??? Then this is an exciting concept here at DSP...........

What is an Digital Artist Trading Card?
Artist Trading Cards are miniature works of art created in your graphics program - 2½ X 3½ (or an old playing card). They are individual originals or small limited editions - they are miniature works of art. On the back of the card is the artist's signature, date, and the number if the card is part of an edition: 1 of 10 or 1/1000. You may wish to add a personal message. All techniques are allowed.
Once designed upload to the Artist Trading Card Gallery here at DSP and start trading!!! Eg People email you and request to trade a card with your card and you email the card back to them. Print and/or store to have a treasure trove of cards from friends/e-friends all over the world!!!

What are they for?
The idea is that you trade them with other people who produce cards, either at Trading Sessions or wherever you meet another ATC trader in person. It's also done through e-mail, with trading going on between artists in other states and countries. It's sort of like having artsy pen-pals! They are never sold - always traded freely.

Who started this great idea?
The project was initiated in 1997 by Zurich artist M. Vänçi Stirnemann. Since then hundreds of people from all over the world have traded ATCs during Trading Sessions, through e- mail, or by participating in swap groups like this. There's even a list of world-wide Trading Sessions on the original project website: http://www.artist-trading-cards.ch. Maybe you'll find one near you!

What do I do with them once I get them?
Put them in a card collecting album (like baseball cards), make your own mini-book, use as a scrapbook page embellishment, turn into jewelry, tile your bathroom wall, laminate and put on a keychain whatever your heart desires! (For Aussies) I purchased my trading card album from a local newsagency - very inexpensive ($10 for folder and 10 clear leaflets)

I especially like the idea of cards with DSP members photo on them like you both have done. It would be fun to have a gallery of DSP friends with both their usernames and real names (since I can be forgetful about this). I'll put on my thinking cap to do one of myself.

Ok lots of question being asked - all I can say there still are not many doing DATC yet - this is a fairly new concept for digital scrappers so lots of discussions and ideas will be thrown around in the next few days - Please feel free to talk about any ideas you have!!!

Some things to think about - Putting name/date/country/username on card and number your card - keep a log on your pooter where your cards are going!!!
Tonight Lauren Bavin did a trade with me - I emailed her and said Do you wish to do a Digital Artistic Trade with me? While lauren posted her DATC she emailed the printable card to me. I emailed her a trading card back - I am saving a few up to print on one A4 page.

Anything goes - photos/no photos/word art/elements/paper style/graphic style just remember the size!!!!

You may want to create a special series limiting the number of trading cards in a series(using the one kit) - 1/10

I had made mine and put it in my gallery not knowing we now had a thread for it. I have since then moved it into the correct gallery

Here is my try
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=46726&nocache=1

I also did notice I had the size off by a half an inch (2 1/2 x 3) but will correct it on the next one (2 1/2 x 3 1/2).

I like the idea of trading photo cards with DSP friends and per Ann Maree's suggestion added my username. I also thought it would be fun to include where we are from because I think the variety of places represented is another interesting thing about DSP.

This sounds like so much fun! Years ago when I was into rubber stamping we used to make these for conventions. I have tons and tons of them from those days.

okay, i'm getting the concept! :) i was thinking well i don't know that i'd want to print out a bunch of cards, but then i saw bentrdr's and thought, yeah, i need that! i know she has a real name but that's how i "know" her! :D and ann-maree, what a beautiful photo! so i guess i need to make some time to work on one right? i can't beg 'em, i need to trade 'em?! :D

here's the whole gallery and it's looking fun!

OK, so let me get this straight--I can be a little slow on the uptake occasionally LOL--this is not just for DSP design team designers, right? This is for all of us?

And the procedure is:
Design and post a Digital Artist Trading Card, featuring our glorious self as the artist.
Start swapping with others whose work/cards we admire. So far, so good?

But I also somehow got the idea that we should each design more than one card--is that correct?

Thanks for any clarification anyone can offer to poor muddled me.

As I posted with ATC I am not sure what happened to my settings on PSP but the resolution is off when I resize.

Hopefully I can figure out the problem soon.

Okay, here's my first DATC (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=47290&cat=1190&page=1). I hope I have the right idea.

I'm loving getting to know everybody in this way, what beautiful friends I have!

So, do we make a new one of these any time someone requests a card, or do we send copies of the one we posted, or what?????

lvg4him
08-08-2005, 07:10 PM
ok, i think i am understanding how this is supposed to work (after checking out those cool sites AnnMaree shared).

There are two ways to do this. The first is to make a card and then trade that card with all who ask to trade.

THEN there is the asking someone to trade. You contact a person and say "HEy, wanna trade cards?" They say yes and then you make a card that is specifically for that one person. Post a copy in the gallery, and then email the original to the trader.

You can also create lots of cards and the post them and then whoever claims the trade on that card first gets the original, the others will have to find a different card.

OOOOOooooohhhhhh this is so much FUN!! I think I like the middle way best of all. Personally made for a certain friend in mind. I wish I had realized that. But this one I made will be a limited edition (and Sherri got the first one!). :D

I don't know if I have time to make a new one for everyone. I was kind of hoping we'd post the ones we did and then if someone liked it they could request it. I guess I don't mind if the ones I get aren't unique to me.

As much as I hate photos of myself, I just had to have a go at this cos I think its such a neat idea, especially the cards with photos of ourselves so we can put faces to names :)
So here is My Card (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=47313)

Here is a more simple version - Like I have said in previous posts this still is a fairly new concept so lots of different ideas will be talked/discussed. (I have taken parts of lvg4him thread)

There are two ways to do this. The first is to make a card (2.5x3.5)and then trade that card with all who ask to trade.

This is called an UNLIMITED TRADE Great if you are pushed for time!!!! But you should only trade UNLIMITED CARDS for and UNLIMITED CARDS - Tho there are no DATC police!!!!! Post a copy in the gallery, and then email the original to the trader.

THEN there is the asking someone to trade. You contact a person and say "HEy, wanna trade cards?" They say yes and then you make a card that is specifically for that one person. Post a copy in the gallery, and then email the original to the trader.

This is called a LIMITED TRADE - Maybe a one off or only 1/5 - These are special. They should be numberd on your card.

You can also create lots of cards and the post them and then whoever claims the trade on that card first gets the original, the others will have to find a different card.

There are only two rules

Size 2.5x 3.5
They cannot be bought or sold only traded!

It seems that having two sides to the DATC(a paper scrapbooking concept) is a little difficult for some - and we so want this to be a fun easy thing
So the general consensus at this time is to do a one sided card that includes NAME/DSP USER NAME/COUNTRY/DATE/ AND NUMBER YOUR CARD

In some countries/places ATC's are now being shown in galleries and magazines and are considered a highly prized art form, something to treasure and keep!!!!

Here are my first two attempts, the first one is limited to 10 and the second one is unlimited. Also, I'd already done these with front and back, but if I do any more, think I'll stick with just one side. So get these while they're hot. ;)

DATC1 Limited Edition (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=47352&cat=1190&page=1)

DATC2 Unlimited (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=47354&cat=1190&page=1)
This second one may look familiar to Book of Me devotees--it's a slightly modified version of my BOM title page--seemed perfect for this application.

What a fun thing to do! Thanks to Ann Maree for getting it up and running!

I remember, back in the Paper Days, when the Club Scrap members started trading these. Shabby, junky, rubberstamped, artsy-messy and I just couldn't get into it. Now it makes more sense and sounds like a lot more fun. Although I have an sick granddaughter today, I should find time to work at this. I will post to the gallery, but I wanted anyone who was interested in a trade to know I am open and available...unlimited OR limited. I will be making both.

Blossom
08-09-2005, 11:22 AM
Ahhh oooh I think I goofed. I sent everyone the same card that I posted. I am sorry Ann Maree , Samara and Karen, and any others for doing that if you were expecting a limited edition just for you, can you let me know and I will get stuck into the ideas tomorrow. Its 1.23am here now so I'm off too bed, maybe a little shut eye will clear my obviously muddled and addled brain. Sorry everyone.

You really know how to hit a girl in the addiction! I am no longer *allowed* in comic shops or near the trading card "aisle" in stores because of all the trading cards I've bought... and now it's digital and free!? I want them all!!! LOL And I haven't clue 1 what to put on a card myself. This is like being on a diet and trying to walk *past* the bakery (no, of course that's not my nose-print on the window...!) :D

Gonna have to think on this one! :)

If you're doing an "unlimited edition" you can make one design to give out to everyone.

If you're making "limited editions" you'll make multiple designs.

For example, if you wish to make a design and limit it to 5 editions you'd number each card somewhere on the card (1/5, 2/5, 3/5 etc...) and only 5 people will get that card design, anyone else will either have to have your unlimited version, get nothing, or get your next limited design.

Obviously you can limit it to any number you want, but it should be marked somewhere on the card so the holder (and whoever viewing the cards) knows how rare it is. Or you can go as far as making special editions of 1 copy only, so that everyone you trade with has a different card. Hey, Martha Stewart would! :D

As was pointed out, though, limited editions are going to be rarer and, therefore, not exactly a fair trade for an unlimited edition card.

The card dimensions have been posted a few times, but what about resolution? Any preferences?

I have a few different styles of layouts that I typically do and so I thought I would do a card reflecting each style, here are the first two:

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=47371

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=47372

A quick question, if you see a card that you would like to trade, do you leave a message in the comments or do you send a private message. And, a really stupid question here, if you are looking at a card in the gallery and want to send a private message to the artist how do you do it while still in the gallery? :o (Feeling very sheepish that I can't figure this one out!)

Judyy
08-09-2005, 02:01 PM
Don't feel bad, Debb--I absolutely LOVE this trading card thing, but I'm full of questions about it. I guess because it's new to most of us, we're all feeling our way a little bit.

My question is this: when we trade, do we email a full-size, hi-res copy? My sense is that the answer should be yes--so the card will print out nicely and correctly--but I just want to be sure.

MaureenH
08-09-2005, 02:23 PM
I'm guessing emailing 2.5x3.5 at 300 dpi. I'm thinking you need to leave a private message so you can include your email in it.

The personalized limited edition cards sound pretty special but I don't know how I'd have time (or creativity) to do that many so right now I'm thinking I'll do a few unlimited editions and trade those with anyone who wants them (more than one to one person if they want them).

Here's my first one!

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=47398&cat=500&page=1

This is really a lot of fun! I think I'm just going to do limited cards with sets of 5 or so instead of doing personalized ones. I just dont' have the time to do one for each person right now! I'm going to start working on some more tonight, but for now, there's only 5 of these available, so contact me if you want to trade!

Margie

for private messaging, just click on their username in the gallery. you'll go to their profile where you can pm them or email them.
for resolution, use 200-300 and yes, send by email. a card that small should be a decent size file so easily emailed.
do all the same, each one different, sets of each, or anything in between. it's for fun and it's free, so we won't have any strict rules! but if someone offers a limited edition, you better ask fast. :D
i think i may "sign" each of mine, so it's personal to whoever's requesting it. should i get to making mine... :o

OK, so I have a question (to make sure I don't offend anyone)...

when someone posts a message under your card, does that mean that they want it?? Karen and keeplearning where the only two who actually posted in the comments that they wanted a copy. Others have PM'd me. But I just got pm'd from someone who said that they hadn't received a copy of my card yet. I didn't know they wanted one! :D I explained to them and things are fine (simple missunderstanding).

SOOOO.. if there is anyone who posted a comment and wanted a copy and did NOT get a copy, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I did not know you wanted one! :)

I am noticing in the comments on the newer cards people are saying if they want one or not. or saying they will PM for a card. I know there are no rules, but I would hate for another missunderstanding to happen.

Margie
08-09-2005, 06:08 PM
i'd think trades need to be private and specific, so a pm or an email would be best. we might miss comments in the gallery, so i'd recommend you ask the person by pm or email to be sure!

My DATC is too small-- I made it the correct size-- Then do the usual to upload- HOW can I make it bigger--do I need to make the original larger??

Margie

when you do the usual, just change the pixels instead of the dimensions. in ps, that means uncheck resample image. an easier way is just make it large on your screen and take a screenshot! :)

Margie, you are so funny, but I know what you mean! I'm so busy sending out cards that I haven't been able to actually request any! And I feel like I just can't keep up, but its so much fun!

Question: How is everyone keeping track of their cards and who they sent them to? I originally create however many I will have of that card and name them with the numbers, for example:

wildgirl_1.jpg
anticp_1.jpg

Then, when one is requested, I add that person's name to the file and send it.

Does anyone have a better system?

jamie
08-10-2005, 01:20 PM
Oh, and I wanted to add this too ... I think that when we post our cards in the gallery, that we should say in the comment area how we prefer to be contacted for a trade, that way, we can keep track. I have been putting there to please email me b/c its the easiest way to see who asks when so that I can send them out in order.

So lets just all make sure we specify this and that we read each other's preferences before we request! Its just a little too confusing for me to read emails, comments and PM's and still be able to tell who asked first! :)

as far as keeping track, I have a list on a paper (digital of course) where i have the title of my card and then numbers underneath them. by each number i put the name of the person who that number of the edition was sent to.

For example, valeri got my first TP card. On my paper it looks like this:

Over The Top
1- valeri
2-
3-
4-
5-

Once I create a card, i create all the jpg's I need for that edition (along with the number). Then I just send them out in order, and delete after they have been sent. I have a WHOLE FOLDER called DATC.
It has a folder for originals that I have made, cards to send out, cards from efriends, and the paper list.

Hope this helps!

i am so enjoying all the DATCs!! everyone is so creative. which brings up a point. i know that we scraplift layouts, but should we scraplift DATCs?? i mean, aren't they supposed to be original? i have found several that i want to scraplift, but am curious what others think.

The way I'm keeping track is in my gallery.

I just edit the post to add more people. I'm also using DSP user names so that I can easily locate the person through the "Members List".

As far as saving them, I save one as a preview for the gallery. Then I make how ever many cards I need and label them like this, DATC10_1_5_Jamie. This tells me that this is my 10th card, 1st run of 5, and that DSP user "Jamie" got the card. When I'm done saving the jpg, the working file is deleted, never to be run again!

Margie-Neener, neener, neener, I have a Jamie!!!

I hope to schedule a chat on DATC so we can all get together and nut out the finer details of DATC - DSP is at the forefront of DATC so we are setting the benchmarks!!! Sooon I expect to see discussions on printing and storage etc - Not to mention we may want to have a brag - Did I mention I have 6 LIMITED EDITION CARDS - LOL

Someone mentioned in a comment the possibility of re-trading, esp. to get hold of limited edition cards that are no longer available from the original artist--that throws a whole additional layer into this craze. This could get even MORE interesting!

Not wanting to do more cards of 'me' I thought I would concentrate on the "Artist" part of trading cards and came up with this. Not sure if it fits in with what everyone else is doing, so let me know if I'm heading down the wrong path. ;)

I don't know if this idea has merit, but I noticed on JenaRN's card she included "for Maureen" on it. I'm wondering if on an unlimited series we could add the person's name we're giving it to. For those of us who aren't feeling up a a lot of limited editions, it would personalize our unlimited cards. Thougts?

Hi ladies! I'm a newbie to this website, but I am addicted to ATCs...or DATCs as everyone calls them here...I finished 3 today. Sadly, mine are all art-related...does anyone mind if I post them even tho there is not a photo of me on them? I'll certainly put my name (schaefme) and location on them (germany) so that you'll know it's one of mine...is that ok?

Anyone finding the DATCs are taking over from the d-scrapbooking obsession? I haven't finished a layout in a week, but I can whip out these little hummers like there's no tomorrow! LOL.....

This is what I have done with the first few cards, I chose these ones because they all have pink in to tone with the folk art roses. I have put them in a black artists book , using silver photo corners, I am not able to stick them as straight as I wanted because my fingers are all thumbs with little things at present. I might have to get someone else to put them in for me and then do the art work .

I am having a lot of fun creating limited editions out of the 1923 Tally Card designs I found in my mother's high school scrapbook. I now have 4 designs, with the first retired and the second almost retired. Another trader who is also doing a series has claimed #1 in each version as I have from hers.
This is a suggestion of another way to trade if you see a series you like.

Oh Hurray!! I have been thinking all day of some diabolical scheme to "make" you do DATC's, like rounding up everyone and getting them to bombard you with private messages, or making special edition cards just for you to 'guilt' you into it! :D I'm so glad we don't have to resort to such drastic measures. I had heard about ATC when I started carving rubber stamps out of erasers for letterboxing. But I didn't know they had gone digital! : ) Cool!

I will have to combine both worlds, my personal handcarved letterboxing stamp and something digital. : ) Yeah, now I have something to work on tonight!

it's just a simple version of a layout I did for NKOTB, but what a great way to share my LOs with family and friends! I'm hooked!

Ok so not quite a DATC but close enough I would say.

My daughter started playing Softball this year and I have been the unofficial photographer of the team. The girls are having a blast with the pics and it was sugguested by a few of them that they would really love Softball Cards of themselves so they can trade with their teammates.

So here is my first one. And of course I used my daughter for the first card I made :D

Digital Artist Trading Cards (datc) - just reposting in thread for any newbies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone interested in Digital ATCs. I'm uploading some DATCs and hope that I can find someone interested in doing swaps via email. I also like 'hands-on' ordinary ATCs and still be happy to trade via email if you have an ATC you would be prepared to photograph or scan and send me the photo via email. This is a good way to trade - and inexpensive - particularly as I am in the UK.
Come on scrappers and ATC artists let's get ATCs and DATCs moving. :) Mo
