I'm new to this whole thing, so please excuse me if this is a silly question, but, why should these fonts not be deleted?

certain common programs use them, windows, explorer, antivirus, notepad, etc... i accidentally deleted times new roman earlier this year and my email was freaking out! it would display a different font every time, and got kind of fun almost trying to guess. :)

I just spent a couple hours uninstalling fonts. I copied over this list while I was doing it so I wouldn't delete anything.
I don't have & apparently never had the Avant Guard font, nor the Palisade. What programs do they go with?

I'm trying to organize all of my fonts. I do not work out of the fonts folder under my Control Panel. Instead, I have a file in My Documents called Fonts. Anytime I've downloaded a font, I've downloaded it into this new font folder. Also, I THINK I copied all of the fonts from the Control Panel font folder into my new font folder when we set up our new computer (it was so long ago, I can't remember but I believe I did this because I've got fonts like Arial and Times New Roman in My Documents>Font folder and they come with Windows, right??)
My question is this: can I delete any font I want from my My Documents>Font folder since I'm not touching the Control Panel font folder? Will I screw my computer up by doing this?
(don't know if this info is necessary or not, but I typically load and install/uninstall fonts using the Font Thing).

do not uninstall from the font thing the fonts you are wanting to delete from your my doc/fonts folder - just do those manually :) but yeah - you can delete anything you want from there :)

Thanks so much for posting this list. I have organized everything except my fonts. Now with this list I can do them too!

I'm going to do this right NOW! No time like New Year's Day to make life a little easier.
the Font Thing uses fonts like this:
When you save a font, you usually extract to a folder on your hard drive (most of use My Files>Fonts to store them in)
TFT COPIES that file when you click Install into the Windows Fonts folder. When you uninstall TFT DELETES that file from the Windows Fonts folder: you still have the font in your folder where you extracted it. It has zero to do with that other folder, it deals with the Windows Fonts folder. That's why we don't save fonts in the Windows Fonts folder, but rather in another location on the hard drive: for storage.
So, if you want to delete fonts from the Windows Fonts folder, do it either from TFT or right in the Fonts folder.
Deleting fonts from your hard drive in another folder won't mess anything up. Only deleting essential fonts right from TFT or Windows Fonts folder messes stuff up. Of course, most fonts are not essential, just those listed.
So, in a nutshell, installing fonts makes a copy of the file, so you'll have two copies of that font on your computer. Uninstalling a font deletes that file, so you're back to just the one copy in your hard drive folder. If you delete a font from your hard drive folder without uninstalling it, the copy will still be installed. You have to remove/delete/uninstall it to get it out of the Windows Fonts folder.

Want to clean up my hard drive but I have 2 questions.
1. If I move fonts from my Windows font folder to the folder I made can I still
use them with TFT if they are uninstalled?
2. How do you uninstall fonts?
3. The fonts I put in the folder I made are they installed when I unzip them?
Thanks

bump! Just thought that some of the new folks here would want to see this thread! It has helped me more than you will ever know. Thanks Margie!
This is a great list! Thanks for bumping the thread, Carla. :)
I currently use "Font Frenzy" and what I like about it is... I can take a "snapshot" any time I want and can revert back to any snapshot easily... (which will install any fonts in that snapshot). :)
Just thought I'd share that 411. :)
