View Full Version : Mini Album Challenge!

It’s the time of the year when I start to think of what to make people for Christmas. I’ve decided to do personalized mini-albums for my husband, mom, mother-in-law, my sisters, my grandmother and Alannah's teachers (six albums total, as I'll do only one album for her teachers). Each album will have photos I took from events in 2005. What’s going to make it EASY, FAST, AND BEAUTIFUL is that I’m going to use mini kits for each of them.
Let’s do this together!!!! :)
1. Choose your photos, and perhaps even a theme.
2. Choose a mini album kit (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2_33&sort=20a&page=1) from the store to use. The 4x6 kits are only $3.99 and the 8x8 ones are $5.99! Such a deal to have a designer do all the hard work for us to just plop our photos in!
3. Crop your photos tight and use the same treatment on them to provide consistency (examples: use a white border or change the photos to black and white or a Virtual Photographer digital filter on all of them)
4. Choose your fonts carefully because you should use the same ones on each page. For example use a handwriting font to journal and a stamp font to title. My new fav fonts are by our own Suzi Walker and can be found in the store too; I love Dora for a handwriting font and I think that Pollyanna and Stamped Kasbah are unique stamp fonts.
5. If you are doing an ABC album, choose an alpha to match the kit.
6. GO GO GO!! You’ll be surprised how fast you can go using a mini kit and preselected fonts!!
7. Create a new album in your gallery. For example, I’ll create one called “ABC Album.” To do this, click on a gallery view. You’ll see the option next to “My Gallery” called “Album Administration” that you will click on. Click on “Add Album.” Give it a name and a description. When you upload your pages, don’t add them to your gallery, but click on the drop down arrow and scroll down to your album.
8. IMPORTANT: Post your link to your completed album(s) in this thread to be eligible for prizes!
9. THE PRIZES!!
a. First, you will have amazing gifts to give someone special!
b. Every two weeks I’ll do a random drawing of the people that have finished an album during that time for a $5 coupon to the DSP store (To be eligible for one drawing, your album must be completed by the following dates Sept 28, Oct 12, 26, Nov 9, 23, Dec 7. Each completed album will be eligible only once for a drawing.) NOTE: Only DSP mini album kits are eligible for the drawing.
c. On December 21, whoever has the most completed albums will receive a $20 coupon to the store for downloads and CDs. If there is a tie, I’ll do a drawing for the winner.
Most important - HAVE FUN!!!! Can't wait to see all the fun mini albums we are going to create!

Darn it Stacey! You keep coming up with all these challenges that I think are so cool! Pretty soon, I'll be in so many of them I won't be able to keep track! AGH!
OK, need to go figure out what to do with this one. I've been wanting to create a mini album for sooo long, this might be the perfect motivation. No guarantees, but I'll definitely give it a try.

I just got Marcee's 8x8 "My Girl" mini kit - she designed it using elements from one of my fav kits of hers "Eternal Bliss." I'll keep track of how quickly I do my first album. She's done all the hard stuff - the sketch and creating the elements!

That mini kit is in my shopping cart as well. I also picked the "Friends Are" one. I'm thinking if I tweak the text on each page and possibly recolor the kit, I could use it for something completely different.
My biggest problem with scrapping is my limitation on family/friend photos. The majority of those are with my parents down in FL and I have no way to get to them till Thanksgiving. Then I'll have a plethora of photos and memories to scrap! Currently most of my photos are scenic from our various trips.
But I have an idea on how to use the My Girl kit. Just waiting for payday. :o

I am thinking about it too. I have to look at my photo's. I can think of three people off the top of my head that I could give one to.
Off to the store!

Examples of completed mini kits? I'm not sure . . . Give me a few days and you'll see my first one! I'm downloading Marcee's My Girl kit as I type this.

i've used one of the ABC albums from the ABC CD (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_6_29&products_id=883) in the shop! talk about an easy way to do albums!! here's the first sample (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=18160) and the second (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=18161).
and i did a fun little fold-up kind in no time flat! here's the first sample (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=13290) and the second (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=13247). it's no longer in the store, but there are others! they're called folded mini albums, instead of just mini albums.
i love mini albums!! :)

So cool, Margie! And what a wonderful challenge, Stacey, and just in time to get started on those Christmas gifts. My best friend is a woman whose husband keeps her well-stocked with everything her heart desires, so it's sometimes tough to think of good gifts for here. But an album of pix of our "adventures" together would be right up her alley.
Also, let me make a plug here for those with parents, grandparents, or others who are sadly losing their memories (Alzheimer's, senile dementia, etc). My dad is in this situation, and he just LOVES to look at people's photos--it's exciting for him when he can identify someone, and when he can't, someone's always there to help him out and sometimes just jogging the memory can help. Looking at these albums is a nice calming activity you can do together with your elderly loved one, and also, according to my research, a good, non-threatening memory exercise for him or her. The mini-album is perfect because it's so portable. When I had to move my dad to Alaska last year after Hurricane Ivan, he had a paper-scrapped mini-album and he wouldn't leave home without it.
OK, sad part's over. Time to choose my kit(s) and get to work! Thanks for coming up with this great idea, Stacey!

Holy mackerel, I just looked at those mini album kits in the store--how did I not see those before? They're gorgeous, and so many different styles for different people/occasions. I'm just now downloading four of them--that's right--four! I hope this challenge hasn't introduced me to a new addiction! :D

You're right about the albums for older people being perfect. At my suggestion, my husband did an album with his mother in her last years. Previously their visits together were not too interesting, but working on the album together and talking about the memories triggered by the photos made it a wonderful time for the two of them and a treasure she could leave to her children. It was one of the few things she took to the nursing home with her.
My father also has Alzheimer's and he loves looking at the photos and pages I create because it gives him back some of his memory for a little while.

JUDY - too funny! Can't wait to see yours and everyone's albums! I started working on mine last night and did three pages in 30 minutes. FAST FAST FAST. I picked two fonts to use throughout and used the color picker to pick the font colors from the kit - a dark and a light color. I added them to my swatches for easy selecting.
Also, PSPX has a wonderful, easy crop feature that made cropping the photos and giving them a matched border so easy.
Rayne - I'm going to do a 4x6 ABC album for my nephew and nieces. You're right - 26 pictures is a lot, but think of how fast we'll zip through them! Can't wait to see you get started! I know you and Judy are swamped with challenges, so I'll be interested in knowing how fast this one goes for you once you get organized.

Thanks, Maureen and Judy - now I realize that I should do one of these for my Gramp. With my bright idea to do an ABC album for my nephew and nieces, I'll be doing about 10 mini albums before Christmas!

I don't think mine is going to go quite as fast. :o I decided my album would be pics of me and my sister (together and individually) throught our lives (hopefully including some memorable events (like graduation, marriage, etc)). I plan to give it to my parents as an anniversary present. Their 39th anniversary is on Christmas Day.
But I don't have too many pics of us, so I pleaded with my sis to send me any and all pics she has (printed and digital). Hopefully she'll get those out to me by mid next week, if not sooner. I plan to bug her about it constantly. :p
Right now, my biggest issue is deciding what colors to use (I'm leaning towards b/w photos) since I'm recoloring my album template from the original. The ideas are flowing though for each letter. I just hope I can find a pic to signify each word.

This made me snicker because my sister is SO SLOW at getting me photos. When I was in St. Louis she didn't send me ANY photos on her own. I did an album of her kids' portraits and it took her a month to send them to me. I told her, "Do you want a Christmas present or not?!?"
I like the idea of b&w photos, but for my first album I decided to do color because I'm cropping the photos so tight. For the ABC albums, I think I'll do b&w too.

Hmmm well my friend was married June 2003 when I was maid of honor (or was that dishonor!??? ). She's has her 40th birthday on 1st October, maybe a little fold up book of that with some of her honeymoon pics too, would be a nice present.
Think I might just go for that challenge.

Wow Stacey - I just glanced at the pages you've uploaded so far and they look so pretty. You've convinced me! I just bought the My Girl mini kit and Ill be downloading it tonight when I get home. I also got the wedding kit. I'm going to use it to make a book for my DH's cousin who just got married a few weeks ago.
A bunch of the family uploaded our digital photos to a Kodak gallery online, so I have 300+ photos of the event to choose from. This one might not take as long as the ABC album.
Oh, and thanks for the blinkie!

Who, me? Swamped with challenges? Say it isn't so?
Really, I'd just been thinking that I need to achieve some focus in my life, and take a break from just grabbing at everything that comes my way. LOL
Esp. with the 50 or so papers I've got to grade between now and next Tuesday.
I do like the mini-album challenge, though, and intend to stick with it. How could I resist an opportunity to scrap AND get some Christmas "shopping" done? ;)
Stacey Jewell Stahl
09-14-2005, 05:25 PM
Judy, you are SO focused!!! Your scrapping has improved 100% - remember one of my comments on one of your first layouts about not mixing paper-style and graphic-style elements?? NOW LOOK AT YOU!!! DET Round 2!!!!
:) :) :) :) :) :) :)
I did five pages in my first album and they each took about 15 minutes. Having the fonts and font colors really makes thing go even faster. On one I used word art instead of journaling so that was even quicker!

Excellent job Stacey...They look so wonderful! Have you added anything to the pages from the kit itself, or just strictly photos and journaling?
Judyy
09-15-2005, 09:38 AM
I did four or five pages yesterday evening, before I got called away from the computer for supper--oh, yeah, supper. Then there was the DET chat (on to Round 3--YESSSSS!), and then I had to finish that stack of grading, then I fell into bed, so I didn't get any pages actually posted. I should be able to get them up tonight or tomorrow--eager to hear what you all think of them.
I probably fiddled with them more than was strictly necessary, but I think I'm having trouble now with something that's so quick and easy, if you can believe it. I mean, you plop in a photo or two, throw down a title and add a little bit of journaling, and you're done. It seems positively hedonistic, it's so fun and easy! So I guess I have to make it harder than it needs to be. LOL--I'm my own worst critic, but aren't we all?
LOVING this challenge!!!
Stacey Jewell Stahl

Excellent job Stacey...They look so wonderful! Have you added anything to the pages from the kit itself, or just strictly photos and journaling?
One page had room for journaling, but I used word art instead. I bought the Scraps of Words Family CD and it has 40 quotes on it in 4 different formats, for 160 files total.
On two of the layouts I did use elements from Marcee's matching kit Eternal Bliss. I just love the kit and am so geeked about the matching mini album.
So here's what I've used so far:
* Three fonts in three colors. Stamped Kasbah for stamped titles, Dora for handwritten journaling and Pergsana for script titles. I used the color picker tool for the font colors: dark brown, dark beige and black.
* 9 pages from the mini kit; 3 more to go until I start duplicating pages. I'm thinking for this album I'll do about 40 pages - 20 front and back.
* Four elements from Marcee's Eternal Bliss kit
* One word art file
Like Judy said, this is too fast and a little startling at how little effort it takes to get a WOW page! I'm so happy about this challenge too! Can't wait to see both of your albums!!
I'm thinking I'll recolor the pages in aqua and the same photos for my sister's album, just change the journaling. I'm not sure if I'll change the fonts though - I really like how these three compliment each other.

Well, I've got 6 pages of the wedding mini album done. Not sure how many more need to be in there. I still have to download them, and I'm not sure how they will look once printed since I had to use some low quality photos that I got off the internet and resize them up. But hopefully it will look alright. I tried to use some soft focus to help with quality issues.
But wow...how easy!

OK, I just uploaded my first 6 mini album pages. I mixed it up a little with the colors to get some variety. I've been learning to like pink a little more since I've been digiscrapping, but that MUCH pink still kind of scares me.
So I'd LOVE to get any CCs on the colors especially, but also on anything else, since this is going to be a Christmas gift.
I may get seriously hung up on this minialbum thing--it's so quick and easy, and such nice results!

Judy, I'll post comments on your album tomorrow. My insomnia is nearly over and I need to head to bed. I was very industrious for the last 75 minutes though - I did 8 pages in another album!! This one is for my mother-in-law and I'm using Kim Liddiard's Charmed mini album kit.

Ooh, Mandy, that sounds like a luscious cover for an album!
Think I'm going to use a Creative Memories album. They make a 7X7 size and I've been resizing all my pages to 7X7 for just that reason. There's nothing special about CM albums, but I've been using them for years, and they're sturdy and expandable and archival quality.
On the other hand, I was also thinking about trying to do an altered book, with my pages slipped in between the actual book pages. But this requires choosing an appropriate book that I won't mind mutilating. I've been itching to try my hand at altered book art, but I can't seem to get started. This might be a good opportunity. Stay tuned to see whether I actually make up my mind anytime soon. :D

The idea came to me when we were packing to go away for Saturday night this past weekend. It isn't a gift or anything. Just something I found amusing to put together.
I am working on 2 ABC albums, one of each son, for my parents for Christmas gift...I'm leaning toward 1 ABC album of both boys, but I want to see if I can manage 2.

Such a neat little album, Stacey42! I think that's the beauty of the mini-album--it can be something elaborate or something that you just find "amusing to put together" because it's so versatile and quick to compose. I loved reading about your evolution from one or two bags to a whole baggage-compartment-ful. LOL

Great album Stacey!
Unfortunately my mini isn't coming along as quickly as I thought. The main reason is I just don't have the photos I want. It's hard when you have to rely on someone else for what you need. My sister has been great though and is sending me some photos, just not quite ones I'm ready to use. Those will be if I can't find any others.
I really want to encompass our entire lives up to now, so I need pics of when we were little and unfortunately those are probably still boxed up somewhere in my parents house. Since they are on vacation, I'm forced to wait either till mom can scavenge them or when I go visit at Thanksgiving so I can scavenge myself.
I'm itching to complete a mini though. I'm slowly working on the wedding album. I got another page completed. I want about 20 pages in the book, so I'm about half way there. I just need to find time. LOL!

But seriously, that Daisy mini-album of Kim's is too cute for words. Gotta do one of those, maybe with me and Cocoa. And when will I do this? Who knows?
Hey, this could be a good weight-loss strategy: more time spent scrapping=less time for eating. Hmmm.... :)
Stacey42
09-21-2005, 12:08 PM
Scrapping is part of my weight loss effort. If I am on the PC at night, using both hands to surf the boards & reply or to create LOs or thigns for LOs, then I can't be eating. I saw the preview of her next mini album - think ROMANCE!!!Oh, I hope it uses the My Heart is For You Page Kit...that would be an awesome mini album!
BadJuju...I feel you! I have so many things on my plate and these mini-albums are so addicting! I'm using the Family Adventures page kit to create a mini honeymoon album...since I really liked how my Round 3 layout turned out. And now you've given me a good idea for that daisy kit...one of my dogs!
Yikes...I'm getting in over my head here...I will have to make a list of all that I'm working on so I can keep track.

Stacey - what a great album! So simple yet so well put together. Great job!
I've gotten pics from my sister, so now I'm scanning them in. Then I will have to pick through them to figure out which ones I want to use. Maybe I'll get to start on another mini this week.

Great album, Stacey--I love the Celtic ropework decoration and the little touch of sparkley stuff!
I've just posted two more pages in the mini-album I'm building for my best friend. Her girls will love these because they're included.
Spring 2005 A (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=54365&cat=1321&page=1)
Spring 2005 B (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=54366&cat=1321&page=1)
I worked on these on my laptop at a large crop event yesterday. It was sponsored by Creative Memories, but it was a benefit for Hurricane Katrina victims so not limited to just CM scrappers. I got almost four pages done, plus I spent some time fussing over my DET contest layout. But I spent an AWFUL lot of time explaining what I was doing to paper scrappers, though I tried not to be too effusive about it, since it was sponsored by a paper scrapping outfit--it was hard to rein in my enthusiasm for digital scrapping!

Ooh, ooh, ooh, I just had a great idea about these mini-albums. If we're giving them as gifts, we could include a CD or DVD with all the pages copied onto it as jpg files. That way, the person receiving the album has another copy, just in case, and if it's a DVD, they can look at the album on their TV.
You could even design a cool jewel-case insert. Or, since mine is 8x8, I'm thinking of attaching a DVD envelope to the last page, so the disk will more reliably stay with the album. My excitement about this is WAY out of proportion to its importance. I hope I don't lose it and end up giving this gift sooner than Christmas just because I'm so excited for my friend to see it. :D

Yet another good reason for DH to buy a DVD writer drive. I'll add it to the list ;) I do like the idea of including a CD. My parents are far more likely to put the album up as a screeensaver & see it all teh time than look through a paper one very often

Judy, I have to second that comment! I've finally started working on a honeymoon album. Granted I only got the title page done last night, but I've organized all my photos now.
I also scanned in a bunch of photos I got from my sister, but I'm finding there aren't too many of us together. :( So I'm thinking that I might do an ABC of her...I've now got tons of photos of just her in all her cute poses! :)

Rayne--Organizing the photos is a HUGE step. I went to a large paper-scrapping crop on Saturday, and many people there were JUST sorting and organizing photos. That's still something I need to do with most of my older photos.
Hey, Stacey--I just took another look at your first post on this challenge and noticed that the first complete-a-mini-album-by date is 28 September if we want to have our names included in the prize drawing. So do we have until the end of the day on 28 September, until midnight, that is? You know, when my students have to upload an assigned paper by a certain date, I give THEM until midnight. ;) ;) :D

Yes, I might have to rethink this whole sister album. I thought it was a great idea, but I just can't find enough decent pics of us together...and that's really what I wanted. Hmmm, I might try it if I can just find 10 photos. Will have to really search again tonight.
I think I might be getting close to finished with the wedding album. I've got 15 pages now that I just posted 3 more. What do you all think...should I have a few more pages? I've got plenty of photos to pick from!
UPDATE: Ok, I added one more page and I'm calling it done. It's just a cute little memory book as she's already ordered a print of every photo that was taken (over 600 photos)! LOL! So I guess add me to the first drawing, please. :)

Stacey, I wanted to get the mega ABC kit from the store, but as I mentioned, I'm very broke right now, so I'm doing my ABC album using a different kit. Actually I'll be honest and say it isn't from DSP. I'm using the Shabby Smiles kit from Shabby Princess. It's going pretty fast since I'm keeping the pages simple. But since I'm not using one of the mini kits, will it still count for a drawing if I finish it in time?
Going quickly meaning, I did almost 3 pages last night between going out to visit friends and watching Las Vegas. I hope to get at least 3 more done today. I will post when I get half the alphabet done. It's an album about my sister, since she sent me so many pics of herself. LOL!
Oh and I was talking to my boss yesterday and he gave me some ideas on what I could do for my sisters album that I want to do. So I'll have to look into it.

Aussie--Re: colors, I've had great luck with recoloring the pages of the My Girl mini-album kit, some just a little change from pinks to peaches, but with others I've gone all the way from pinks to greens. Did some desaturation in some cases, too. Click on the Ireland page in my sig line to go to my Girlfriends mini-album and see what I mean. All those kit pages were originally shades of pink.
By the way, that's such a pretty layout of your daughter!!! I can see why you'd want to include it.

I have a multitude of projects on my To Do list, but an ABC album is on it. I'm expecting that your album will inspire me just as all of the mini albums have. Hey, Aussie--Another idea, re: b&w photos. You could try that thing where you make most of the photo b&w, but just leave a significant part colored in--your daughter, of course, in most cases. I'm working steady on my abc album, but sadly it's starting to get redundant! The same kit over and over, even though every page is unique. And I'm having trouble finding good words to describe my sister. I want some good words, not just the regular cute, pretty, etc... LOL! I've gotten the title page and all the way through F done! So I will probably take a break for a while and play with something else. Then get back to it, maybe tomorrow. I hate to leave a project unfinished, so I'm going to hold off on posting it till it's just about done.

raynebair I love your sisters album. I'd love to do one for my sister and I. Enough pic's could be a prob as there is 10 years between us, and seeing I'm the one always to take the pic's, I'm not in them with her. :(

I'm working on one for my Mom right now. It's all pics of the boys 'working'. Mom likes to joke about 'back in the day those boys would be workin' on the farm by now'. SO I have aged all the photos & am doing a "Back in the Day" mini album. :)
I don't think I'll have it up by tomorrow though. It's going to be about 25 pages and uploading 2 at a time, at my connection speed, is going to take most of my free time tomorrow night. :( But i don't think it would count anyway since it isn't with a mini album kit. ah well. it's fun to do :)

Rayne--Your Sisters album is making me crazy--it's so great. You've done a beautiful job, esp. since you say you don't have many pix of you and your sister together. The ones you do have are adorable, and then it's a good idea, too, to feature occasional pages of each of you individually.
I like the additional elements you've chosen, too--just enough to add a little something.
Rats, now I gotta do one of these for my twin brother and me. I've got nothing BUT pix of him and me together as kids. A few years ago, when I was celebrating my 50th birthday, a friend wanted a pic of me as a kid to put on my birthday cake--it took a few days of searching to come up with a photo WITHOUT my brother in it. LOLOL!

Thanks guys. Judy...yes, I did do a big layout using that school pic. As I mentioned, I don't have many pics...most of them are all at my parents' house in FL which is about 8-9 hours away from where I live.
My sister lives closer to them and she said she was going to look through their albums soon. If not, I might try to do it when I go down for Thanksgiving. They probably have tons of photos of us together from when we were growing up.
Oh, BTW, Thanks for the tutorial links. I've looked at the page a hundred times, but never noticed the one for photo tinting. I basically do the same thing they mentioned (erasing the b/w photo) but it was nice to see several other ways of doing it.
And, Here's a tip: If you have a photo that doesn't quite have the right shade of a color, try lowering the saturation. That's what I did on the strawberry to get the colors to better match the kit. It was amazing to see it blend so well after I lowered the saturation from the original bright red.

And hey, I just posted what I'm calling the last page of the Girlfriends mini-album. It's really the last page I'm doing, but possibly--I hope--not THE last page in the album, because I'll encourage Ginny to continue to add pix to it after I give it to her. And knowing what shutterbugs we both are, she'll be happy to comply!
Anyway, then, there's not much to this last page, but its title pretty much says it all:

Mandy, I think you have to go into the Edit Photo screen for each LO you want to move to the album. Then, in the Change Category drop-down menu, you should see, near the bottom somewhere, the name of the album you've created. Choose that album and click Submit Changes--you don't have to change anything else unless you want to.

Congratulations Mandi! If you are looking for suggestion on how to spend it, I have a few:)
I finally picked the photos for each of the boys 1st year albums. I'm actually using a qualifying mini kit for them too :D It took so much longer than I planned to choose them. I'm starting to think picking 26 for an ABC album is impossible.
If the designers are taking requests....some grungy boy/male type minis would be nice. Something not babyish KWIM?

I'm starting to think picking 26 for an ABC album is impossible.
Impossible, NO. But really hard, YES! I'm working on an ABC album now and I'm having the hardest time picking photos, because my selection is so limited. I don't really have too many photos, and I hate making more than scrapbook page with the same photo, so I'm trying to find some I haven't yet used!
Boy is it tough. I'm definitely looking forward to Thanksgiving, when I can browse mom's old albums for more photos. I might just snag several albums so I can go nuts scanning.

I've started on the Graduation one for my daughter and playing with the B&W with a hint of colour things. Got the My girl kit so am trying with that one first.
The worst bit is trying to do it without her knowing hehehe having to be really sneaky and locking the file so she can't snoop. She know's I'm up to something cos I nearly got sprung going through her old school stuff. Glad she works everyday though or I'd never get anything.

I just want to let everyone know that I've made my Girlfriends album "Private" just temporarily. It'll be back among the public albums in another week or so.
I wanted to tell my friend--who's getting the album as a Christmas gift--about being chosen for the new DET, so I wanted to be able to direct her to the gallery to see my winning layouts. But I couldn't let her get into my gallery and see that mini-album--she'd know right away it was for her. Can't have that!
It's time I started on another mini-album anyway!

Got a question.
How many pages do you think are good for a mini album? Just in general. Is there a minimum in your mind or a maximum? Do you have an idea of how many pages you'll do when you start or do you just let it evolve?
Ok, so that is more than A question. :) I've been working on Ren fair 2002-2004 & realized I don't have many pics of those years. I was feeling that 6-8 was kinda on the small side for an album but all together I have 20 pages (including section titles). ren 2005 was 28 pages including credits which is getting big to me. So I was wondering how others judged size.
Stacey Jewell Stahl
09-30-2005, 09:49 PM
Stacey, 28 pages is 14 front and back. To me that doesn't seem too large if you have enough photos and interesting things to see. Perhaps you can add your older Ren Fair photos to the current album and have a larger one. I guess my answer is: how many pages are in the album you've purchased or can you add pages? I bought 8x10 albums last Christmas to give as presents and each had 10 pages, so 20 layouts. I had to buy more filler pages.
I'd say, let your photos determine how many pages you have, plus the size of the album you are filling.

Good morning, SAMA! I have good news and great news!! The good news is I saw previews of Marcee's two new mini album kits last night, and the great news is they are AWESOME! She used her Special Expressions kit for one of them. The colors are beach blue and taupe, very neutral and appropriate for your request for "more masculine" kits. I happen to be a huge fan of stitching and she's got loads of it in the kit.
The other mini kit is RED! I can't remember the name of the kit she used to make it . . . it has stripes and a floral motif. Again, it's lovely.
She said they'll both be in the store by Tuesday or Wednesday. :)

Judy, I think you'll love the Special Expressions mini by Marcee for your project.
I just did a couple more pages in my mil's brag book this morning. I got some new word art by Suzi and am loving it. I may go back and change some of the word art I've done on other pages. The Scraps of Words More Family is what I'm using for the quotes for grandparents - gotta use some of the cousins and aunt and uncles too!
Judyy
10-03-2005, 11:49 AM
Speaking of Word Art, Stacey, do you know of any twins-specific word art available in the shop? I've seen brother and sister stuff, but no twins. I guess I could try to do my own, but as I've said elsewhere, I'm like a monkey with a stick when it comes to word art--I can scratch out something, but it's generally nothing you'd want to save for posterity. IYKWIM

Hmmm, here are the only things that spring to mind right now, re: twins quotes:
"Egg with a double yolk";
"Growing up in the same house with your best friend."
Mainly, it would be nice just to have some pretty word art using the word "twins."
Thanks!

I'm almost done with Drake's 1st year album.... the pages I am going to upload anway. I'll upload one for each month even though I have several pages for each month.
Yesterday I got 2 new photo albums. One I bought just for the fabric cover. It feels very Ren-like to me & it holds 200 photos. So I think I will use it to hold all the Ren mini albums. At the rate I am averaging that means it will hold until Ren 2010. :) The other has a memo space next to each photo. I'm using it for 2005 Year Highlights. I do a highlight album every year. Next year, with luck it will be 8x8 scrap pages with month dividers. This year it will be straight up photos, with memos & with Tina's Seasonally Yours mini album as monthly dividers.

Ladies, if I had a Mini Album "Crop til you Drop" event, what could you offer for ideas? I was thinking about doing an online crop with everyone checking in for 5 minutes every hour and scrapping their mini albums the other 55 minutes. We could do one in October, November and December. I'm thinking a Saturday.
Any ideas? Would you be interested in this?

So it would be like there's a start time but not really an end time...just when you can jump in? That would be awesome!

I've never done a mini albumn (have only done a few layouts so far) but think this is a great idea for christmas gifts. I purchased the all about me mini album. I have a question, which I think should be obvious to me, but I can't figure it out. If I want to delete some of the words (for example :Me and My Dad") how do I delete it? I tried the eraser tool, but that didn't do anything.
Second question is, what font is used (if I want to just change a word, but not delete the whole thing)
Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

k-9, check the txt file that came with the kit. Usually it says what font was used.
I usually clone it out, but that can be tricky depending on what the background is like. I looked at the kit you mentioned and for something like that I would cut (by duplicating it to another layer) out a chunk of the background that appeared to match and lay it on top to cover the words.
What software program are you using?

Great questions! I've cloned out stuff that I didn't want to use, so perhaps this will work for you too. The font is listed in the Terms of Use text file - you can see the TOU in Windows Explorer when you open the kit.
You could also put a tag over it, if that would work. Please post both versions so we can give you some feedback. :)

I'm looking forward to the chat. I can host an hour Saturday evening or Sunday morning 9 or 10am.
I like that Scraps of WordsCD but I think i am going to tie up my modem with the Scraps of Back Packs (I think that is what it is called) this month. :) I could order the CD but then I would have to wait even LONGER . :D

Stacey, I can't wait to see BOTH the sci-fi kit and what is bound to be the outstanding minialbum kit you come up with! And yes, I love Marcee's new mini kit, too--planning to purchase tomorrow, when I have no classes.

sjeri - It's wonderful. What a great memory book for generations to come. You did a fabulous job. I love how you mixed pages of written memories with pages of photos...great idea. I'll have to remember that.

How does one assemble one of the folded mini albums?
(Sorry for the short post . . . gotta get to bed before my head hits the keyboard. I would look soooo silly with asdfghjkl; imprinted on my forehead. Although . . . since I'm trying to teach my students how to touch type, it would be a good visual aid for them.)

OOOH!! I just uploaded my first mini album to the store! It's called "The Star of Christmas" and when I have a link for you, I'll post it here.
With all of the DSU homework and DET boot camp stuff, is anyone done with a mini album for the drawing today - Oct 12? You've all been cranking out some amazing layouts for other projects and I suppose are banking your mini until the CROP TIL YOU DROP EVENT. I'll post who I put in the drawing when I post the winner - - I'll look in this thread for postings of new albums since the last drawing.

I think my last 2 minis qualify for the drawing... that last one I'm sure was put up after the first drawing. I'm working on Derek's first year now, but I won't get it up tongiht.

Yikes...I just haven't had any time. I'm still waiting on some more photos from my sister. She hopes to get them in the mail this week or next and I know I'll have some good ones to scan for my sisters album. Then I might be able to finish it and possibly my ABC also.
Still waiting on a travel kit so I can scrap some of my vacation photos. I may have to take the plunge and start working on my honeymoon album, even though it won't qualify since I'm using a regular kit.
Besides DSU and Boot Camp (which I failed to do this week :( ), I've been busy creating my own elements. Am going to try to work on my own kit also now that I've got some ideas on what I want to include. :)

There won't be any competition from me--pretty tied up with DSU190 and doing DET layouts, plus, oh yeah, my life. But I just bought and downloaded a couple more minialbum kits today, so I'll be ready for the crop.

I'm getting stuff together to do Ren 2001 & a get together in Detroit for the chat though so I'll be ready to go.

Well you sure got a lot of work done before you got all scrapped out, Stacey! Your mini of your son's first year beats any of those pre-printed baby books I've ever seen.
I'm very excited to see the new mini-kit made from the My Heart is For You kit--all those delicious deep colors and curves--yum!

Stace - can you please PM me your real name and e-mail address so I can have the prize patrol send you your $5 coupon?

Hey Stacey - There is a You Are mini album in the store but there is also a You Are mini album page kit, which is the same thing, except without the words. The tags and brads are separate from the "templates" so you can use your own words, expressions, etc. Would both qualify for the drawing?
I love this mini, but would prefer the kit so I can use my own words rather than the ones that are on the premade album.

The drawing is only for people who've bought DSP mini album kits. Several people have done albums with page kits and posted here, but are not eligible for the bi-weekly drawing. I love seeing all of the albums, DSP minis or not - so post here whether you've made your own mini or used a DSP one!
Thanks for asking.

I didn't know that Jamie had made a mini album for Christmas in July - I have no idea how I missed that! I'm sorry. Point of clarification for everyone, since the album was a freebie, it cannot be part of the drawing. The drawing is for mini albums from the DSP store only. Please forgive the confusion on my part. That said - PLEASE use Jamie's beautiful kit and post here so we can see your layouts! They are gorgeous!! WOW!!

Donna, let me know what kit you want as a mini album and you may get it!
Marcee is working on a travel album, but not til next month. And Kim is doing "My Heart is for you." I'm very slow, but I do have a mini album kit on my to-do list, two of them actually. :) I scrap fast, but design slow. Can't have everything, right? ;)

What I would like is a kit that lets you decide where to put the picture. A DIY mini kit as it were. A couple 4x6 backgrounds, a rectangular photo mat, a square photo mat, 1-2 different label designs & maybe an embellishment or 2. So if I wanted to put a picture on a diagonal for variety I could. or layer to pics or whatever. An actual kit only mini sized I guess.

I talked with Amanda about this and right now we will not be offering pages kits in 4x6 format. Sorry, Stace. I'll tell you what I've done with the Inkster kit that I'm using for my ABC album for my nephew, as the pages are 12x12 and my layouts are 5x7. I resize my paper to 40%, resize the definition word art 30%. The paper fits perfectly and my word art is consistent from page to page. Hope this helps!

Another idea--4 x 6 is approximately half of an 8 x 10, so you could maybe use a kit that includes 8x10 backgrounds and just take it from there. I've thought about doing this myself. Of course, then it wouldn't qualify for this challenge, but, you gotta do what you gotta do. :)

Here's my very first ever mini-album and my first entry in the challenge:
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=1393&ppuser=23215
I'm making this as a present for my friend who got married in August. (I'm also scrapping her wedding, but that's a whole 'nother huge challenge and is taking forever!)
Putting the shower/bachelorette pictures into a mini-album was so much fun...it felt like cheating! I love Marcee's kit! But I'd really appreciate some feed-back and CC before printing these pages since I'm still such a newbie and love learning from everyone's suggestions.
Thanks for looking and for all your help!

Hey, Linda, I only just glanced at the thumbnails so far, but they look great!
It's, um... going so slowly on my grandmother's mini album (but danggit, I'm still doing it!) that I bought an um.... mini album for the one for my grandmother AND grandfather together. It's the "eternity" one, and I can't wait to get started. I stick my tongue out at all you people who reeled me into this....and I thank you.
