View Full Version : First Challenge- Halloween Card
The first challenge will be making a Potter themed printable Halloween card.
Feel free to design it however you want, just don't use any copyrighted images. If one would decorate your card ever so nicely, just leave a blank spot as to where the image should be and point us in the right direction to find it.
Using stuff from the Potter Pixel Kit would be WONDERFUL too!
Also, not to plug myself, but.. I have a Magical word art set (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1218) in the store as well.
In the end we can use these to send to friends and family or to hand out to our little trick or treaters along with the candy.
Invitations would be a great idea as well! (I know I'm having a Potter viewing party in Nov to watch all the movies with Tate and my 2 nieces!).
Ok, let's Potter Up!
Zip then attach the zipped file with your card as a jpg (preferred) or png file (ONLY if you are leaving a "hole" for a photo to go behind) UNDER 1 MB in this forum. Zip files will not upload if they are over 1 MB.
Ask in the forum if you need help resizing or zipping files!
PS... please send more challenge ideas to me! Tina@dsplace.com :)

When are the submissions due? And are you going to zip them up for download in the freebies (or even just to the participants)?
I'd also like to add that there is a TON of HP fan art on the web, and many artists will give permission for you to use their work in projects. Here's an example of how to approach them by email; it's easier than you think:
Hi, I was enjoying browsing your art on [site], and love the way you [insert what you like about the art here, same as you do for layouts on DSP]. I'm creating some printable Halloween cards which your [which piece of art] would be a wonderful addition to, and I was wondering if I might use it. The cards might be downloadable free but never sold, and your work would be properly credited with any text or url you wish. I'd also be glad to email or mail you a copy of it when done, if you would consider the request. I love your work and look forward to hearing back from you.
Thank you,
[your name]
Also, if Tina decides that these will be downloadable, we'll have to link the artist back here so they can see what we have in mind. I did that for Lisa Rourke. Be aware that some artists might freely give permission, and some might ask to see an example of what you'd do with it first, which is understandable.
It's never taken me more than a couple of days to hear back from an artist, except in one case where she doesn't answer her email, I guess. But permission was posted on her site so I went with that.
ummmmm.... I'll ask the team. I can't possibly receive the emails myself. I'm on dial up :(
Submissions are due Oct. 15th- plenty of time to get them done and plenty of time before Halloween :D
I'll let you know about the zip.

Slight change in the sharing process. Let's do it here!

Can we use the HP graphics that were provided as freebies on this site?
newbie to digital scrapping...
Sharon Kay
Steph, not sure what you mean about them being like the DATC.... they are just greeting cards for Halloween. Greeting cards/invites, etc.
I,personally, make all of my digi cards one panel. Even Christmas cards. You can make them to fold, if you want tho!
Sharon Kay, that should be fine... that's what the kit was created for :D Be sure to give credit to the element maker :)

I have never considered using digital scrapping stuff to make cards (lesson learned) so what size should the layout be? 5.5 x 8.5? so that it will print out on a half-fold card? or 4x6? You may have opened a can of worms here. But I am just so new to this, sorry.

The choice is yours as to size, just give the instructions or specifics in an attached text file or a post where you show your final design.
Some standard sizes are half fold, quarter fold (fits A2 envelope), and postcard (4 to a sheet, also fits A2s).
I don't know what envelope fits half fold cards. Anyone?
You can also do a half fold lengthwise and cut to fit a number 10 envelope. So you'd say how to print it on the paper (probably centered) and cut on the lines, then fold. Just plan your design to be two sided.
There is also the option of making a page of kids' valentines, like maybe 9 to a page? The back would just have another small graphic and To: From:
Lots of choices, and I'm sure those aren't all. I'll try to get mine done as an example soon.

Okay. I have no idea if this is what you meant. I made everything, including the poem. So... I'm putting up a link for each side, I was thinking it would be something to cut out and glue to cardstock. I have no idea how to set it up for printing back to back.

Oh, very cool! Thanks for playing! I hadn't attached mine, I guess I should do that. Oh, Jo, don't forget the back of your card with the credits or "hallmark".
The end user will just import it into a card program like Print Master. Front, inside, back.

I uploaded my card pieces on Imageshack. The artist is a talented young lady in Poland by the online name of Loethlin.
Front (http://img299.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cardfront9kl.jpg)
Inside (http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/5983/insidecard9yk.jpg)
Back (credits) (http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/2127/backcard9pj.jpg)
It should work nicely as a "quarter size" card in Printmaster or the like, and uses A2 envelopes, which are slightly larger than 5.5 wide by 4.25 tall.
Any questions don't hesitate to ask! Now I'm off to print some up to mail Loe.
