Need inspiration and help with this!

I spent ages yesterday trying to create what i could see in my head with these photos, on the screen...just not sure exactly what it was but it was a real wow layout...this is not!!!
Any ideas or suggestions would be great!

You have a great layout going -- the balance is super! When I first began cutting out photos, I enlarged them way big and noticed how edges soften into the next color in natural photos. So now I use the "anti-alias" feature when cutting out to soften the edges -- or take my soften brush with a very small tip and a medium density and slightly touch the extreme edges of the cutout. I left comments under your layout, but think a spunky type of font would be great.

Maybe you could tell a story in a handwriting font about the day the photos were taken (some of which will be covered by the photos and elements) in a color slightly different than the background - making sure that the words "Grandpa's" and "hat" are in good places with a larger and different font.
