Hi Emma, I set a new thread to discuss actions .I am going to do a quick class this afternoon if I get a chance.
I dont know if you already know what actions are but for any one else who is not quite sure I will explain. In photoshop you can record a set of actions and use them over and over and over again.
So basically if you wanted to apply a grunge border you would recored yourself going through the set of actions then next time you wanted to apply this set of actions to another image to produce that same border ,you pull out the action you recorded and play it, hey presto you save lot's of time and it's great for the boring stuff.
Hope this helps someone .I love actions they are very easy once you try them a couple of time plus you can download plenty of the web.

okay here is the quick version for creating borders for your photos and layout and you can record these steps as an action .
Hopefully the quick classes will be up soon ( I only just submitted them so give the gals a minute or two :) )but for now thought I would give you a quick run through
1. select a marquee tool about an inch in from the edge of your photo
2. apply quick mask mode
3. choose filter and your preference settings
4.exit quick mask mode
5.select >inverse
6. hit delete.

So a quick class is a tutorial not a chat activity? I was already to run in a panic to the chat room! Wouldn't want to get something done at home if I could be playing with my digi-friends!

Lol ,Your right it is a mini tutorial
I would head off to the chat room right now but we are watching Euro 2004 and England is winning the football and from the screams coming out of my front room they just scored again .I love hanging out on here but in my house football takes priority :D
see ya all later enjoy playing!

Ok so the whole point of actions is to save you going through each step everytime you create say a border? Why wouldn't you just save the border as a PS file once completed & then just plop it over your image each time you need it ? See I'm definately not a PS whizz & I'm probably not getting your point please explain this to me Sis, Emma, anyone so I can get it into my head!

You could save your borders as p.s files but you would have to resize each time move around till it fits etc , just more work ,plus p.s. files take up alot of space. With actions you just apply your action and photoshop does the rest .The link you gave is a good one with some cool actions.
There are some borders where you cant use actions such as the ones where Emma was saying use a brush ,you cant save brush in actions though .The automated tasks are just one way of creating borders and cutting down on time when you want to create a layout. :D
