I am using Font Thing and DIP9. My problem: I open up FT and click "load" on an uninstalled font that I want to use. Then I open DIP9. The font I chose is in my font choices, but I can't see it when I type - it's just blank space where I've typed. Apparently I have to click "install" for any font that I want to use. Does anyone know why this is happening?
Also, I read another thread on Font Thing where it was suggested to make a folder to hold a copy of fonts so that when you click "uninstall", which apparently doesn't uninstall the font but deletes it, the font would be deleted but not out of that particular folder. Is the font deleted out of the Font folder that is in my Control Panel? (I'm using Windows XP)?? Where should I make this new font folder for the copies? And which fonts do I copy in there - all the ones from my Font folder in my Control Panel?
Is there any better program that Font Thing? I thought it was the be-all and end-all of font managers but it seems to have a lot of weird quirks.
Help! Thanks!!

i have my folder of fonts in My Documents. this is actually a good thing to do, since having too many fonts installed can slow down opening programs. it also makes cleaning things up easier- you don't have to worry about accidentally uninstalling a 'needed' font, lol.
i don't have copies in my font folder- i have all of my fonts (except the ones that came with windows) in that folder. when i download new fonts- they go into this folder automatically. when i'm ready to use one- i use TFT to install it.
hth :)

Are you happy with FT? Can you just "load" a font and use it or do you have to actually install it? If you uninstall it, does it delete it anywhere or does it remain in your folder under My Documents? I'm just trying to see if it's my computer that's acting up, or if this is a common thing with FT. Thanks!
For FT, uninstalling a font deletes it from your Windows Fonts folder. Installing a font copies it from whatever folder you store them into the Windows Fonts folder.
So I keep my fonts in My Documents as well, and they're always there. If you go into your Windows Fonts folder, you'll see all your installed fonts in there. So if you save downloaded fonts into that folder, they'll be deleted when uninstalling. But you don't want to save them there because if you ever have to reinstall Windows, all your collections will be gone!
FT only browses the folders you pick and automatically installs them in the Windows Fonts folder. There are other programs out there, but I haven't tried any of them.
I've never noticed an option for just Load...I always right click, Install, then they're in PS just fine. Right click, Uninstall, and it's still in my personal Fonts folder.
Let us know if this helps fix the problem

OK - I just want to make sure that I have this right:
I have a font folder under Control Panel>Fonts in which I currently have all of my fonts - those that came with windows and those that I have downloaded.
What I should do is this: create a NEW font folder under My Documents - copy all of the fonts that are currently in my Control Panel>Fonts folder into this new folder. Anytime I download a font, I should download it into this new font folder. When I click "install" in FT, I want it to install from this new font folder into the Control Panel>Fonts folder - when I click "uninstall", the font will be uninstalled AND automatically be deleted from my Control Panel>Fonts folder, but will still remain in my NEW font folder. Therefore, my Control Panel/Fonts folder will act kind of like a middleman - letting fonts come in and out temporarily by being installed and uninstalled by FT - but my new font folder under My Documents will be my permanent font folder.
Is this right??
Yep, tha's right! Just make sure you click the Browse tab in FT to point to your new personal fonts folder. The Installed tab will show all the installed fonts, the browse tab shows all fonts in a particular folder, installed or not!
have So much fun, it's addicting collecting all those fonts!
