Im in the market for a DSLR. Im leaning towards the Canon just because we have a Canon G1 point and shoot right now and we are partial to Canon.
Can those in the "know" please tell me the pros and cons of each camera? Also, my dad has 2 lenses that he is going to give me and I want to know if these lenses are compatible with either of these 2 cameras. The lenses are: Vivitar 28mm wide angle lens and Toyo 75-200 mm telephoto lens.
Thanks for your help!

I have a D70
pros
1.the buffering system, this baby shoots fast.
2.The lens kit is good value for money.
3.colour management is good .
4.pics are really sharp
cons.
1.You need to buy Nikon capture to load curves after your trial version expires .
2.costs more than canon.
Not sure whether the lens you spoke about is compatible, I mainly use the kit lens and a 80 -200mm both Nikon glass.
I think it would be best for you to try both cameras at your local camera shop see which you like the feel of, it's all a matter of what you feel comfortable with ,
both cameras have pros and cons but are good value for money.

Hi Amber ummm difficult question that alot of people have regarding the Canon Rebel Vs the Nikon D70! To be honest if your asking which camera is best it depends on who your asking, many people are brand loyal especially when it comes down to their cameras!!! It can be quite difficult to get an unbiased view due to the fact that people tend to defend their cameras up to the hills & supposedly their cameras always best! Which makes it very confusing if your a consumer in the market to go buy a DSLR, is that right? But saying that I own neither, I have held both in my hand, well I used the rebel abit as my dad owns one & I took a quick look at my SIL (U.K lady) Nikon & they are both nice cameras. If your looking at specifications then the Nikon D70 is your winner. If you already have lenses that fit your Canon & your happy with the Canon make then the Rebels your winner! If your not seriously, seriously into photography & aren't going to push every function & every facility either camera will be a good buy & if it were me I'd see which you can get the best deal on. It really is quite a difficult decision Amber & I'm not going to say go buy either because genuinely I think both cameras are great ones to own & your decision depends on your circumstance, such as finance, existing kit, which you feel is best to handle etc etc etc. Amber have you been to a photographic store & handled both? If you haven't go window shopping, go try them out see how you feel about both cameras.
OK I'm providing you with some links that you might find interesting;

D70
Vs Canon Rebel (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57842)
Hope you find the camera thats right for you in your situation Amber because thats when you'll find your winner!!!
And finally remember beware of brand loyal people offering you advice, try not to let them sway your decision merely due to their own opinions! Its difficult I know, when I was looking for my 1st DSLR I was bombarded with opinions, advice & reviews & my decision at the time was between the Fuji S2 & the Nikon D100, there wasn't a lot in it specs wise so I went for the most competitively priced deal & then pushed for a little bit more. Needless to say I got a fantatsic camera @ a great price plus some accessories.
Goodluck,
Emma. :)

One thing to think about Amber is that you may get alot more help and tips with canon rebel having been out longer .The Nikon D70 although a better spec doesnt have as much advice on how to get the best from your camera because everyone is trying to come to grips with it i.e. on what are the best settings etc.Tom Hogan has written a book on getting the most out of your D70 it will be on the link Fidelis posted

Thanks for the info! I read the reviews by Thom and now Im thinking I might want the Nikon. I would probably start out just using the auto mode but want to learn to use manual and it looks like the Nikon is better for that!
Wow- tough choice though! Im going to go play with them first before my final decision!

Oh forgot to mention that the Nikon is supposed to be very user friendly, it as the facility to run through each function with a little explaination about what that function does, but U.K Lady can probably tell you more about that. Just remember though Amber you will need to buy Nikon Capture software with this camera like U.K Lady as already explained. Anyway nice choice & we look forward to seeing your images in the gallery very soon!

Amber,
you dont have to buy Nikon capture, only if you are going to shoot in raw ,although I think adobe has a plugin for that now but it's still not as good as capture. You are going to need it if you want to load custom curves otherwise you will need to post process alot in photoshop because Nikon purposely under exposes ,which is a good thing .It just means you have to adjust the exposure with your photos ,you can adjust the exposure yourself in camera and then you dont have to do anything at all, thats all custom curves do.You also get a trial version of capture with your camera where you can load the curves and see if you need Nikon capture.
Having it on auto will still give you great pics and before you know it you will definitley want to enter out into programme modes..
It is a great camera but I am biased :D .If you check out my quick class photo border tutorial ,you will see the cheeky kid posing had her photo taken with my D70 then I equalized it to give a more vibrant fashion look.
I look forward to seeing your pics soon.
Jacqui.
p.s. to be fair to fidelis she is right about looking seriously at having Nikon capture as all I did was complain about post processing last week to her :D

Jacqui-
What lenses do you have for your Nikon. Do you have the kit lense that comes with it? Or did you just buy the body and then extra lenses? What is the zoom like with this camera?
Thanks!

Amber buy the kit lens ,it's good for the price and very responsive .I used it on the pic I posted today called "enough".I also have a 80 -20mm lens f4.5 - 5.6 , make sure it is AF and d series ,I got mine second hand off ebay .It wasnt expensive and works fine for now .The next lens I want is the Nikon 70 - 300mm vr at about 1000 English Pounds.
I will post some examples if I get a chance of photos taken with my 80 -200mm,it's fine but not brill in low light you get shake, but as long as the light is good you will have no problem with vibration and it allows you to not be in peoples faces.
The kit lens goes up to 70mm ,I think .I would have to drag it out later to be sure , it is fast responsive and you would really enjoy it in auto mode,it's as responsive as a film slr.
The D70 is a top of the line Digital camera. The best in my opinion on the market. I'm not sure if the len's will work on them but im thinking prob. not. But i do know Nikon and Cannon are both good cameras but Nikon lens are alot better and im stuck on Nikon!!!
