View Full Version : DSU (Digital Scrapbook University)
Hello scrappers! We have gotten many requests for information about DSU so I thought I'd post it here and answer any questions you might have.
DSU classes are 4 weeks long. All lessons are taught in a tutorial format so students can learn whenever they have time that week. You will also meet for a weekly chat with the class, the instructor will determine the time and make a transcript available to students who can't make it. Your instructor is available to you by email for questions.
After registering, you'll receive an email receipt. On the first day of the month the instructor will send a welcome email with links and passwords to the first lesson.
Each class also has a private gallery and a private forum for posting assignments and questions. You must be a registered user at DSP so you can access the private message board for your class.
If you have other questions about DSU or the format, please ask. The DSP Team is happy to answer however we can!

Can you tell me more of the specifics of the course? I'd really like to know how to embellish my pages. Everything else I've been able to cover myself.

The Making Realistic page elements course covers a lot - we cover making realistic metals, wires, fibres, tags and much more but really it gives you the power and knowledge to go from there and create so much more - and there will be an advanced class in October to follow on as there was so much demand from the students of the previous Element making classes!!!!

isn't it possible to sign up for DSU by using Paypal? I would really rather that then use a credit card. I got thru the registration for 2 classes but when I got to the payment screen paypal was not an option.
guess I can't take a class :(

Hello,
My wife is brand new to computers and knows nothing about PSP. She would like to learn how to do digital scrapbooking, so it seems like Intro to Scrapping with PSP would be the best place to start. My question is whether she needs any PSP experience/knowledge for this course...I know she is going to want me to take the course with her, but I don't want for her to get in over her head.
Thanks for your help!

No, as long as it's installed, she's golden! :D This is a wonderful class with many, many beginners completing it already. If she would get stuck, the instructor is very available to help also. But no experience needed! :)
I'm having a Beginner Chat tonight where we'll get started on the Completing your First Page tutorials together. Mostly going over what layers are and how to use Palettes. I'd love to have you both there and look forward to having your wife in class!

If you look in the upper left hand corner of the post you can see the date it was posted. Emma's beginner chat was held in September - although I'm sure there will be more of them.
Under the university tab there are tutorials for beginners! That is a great place for information.
Do come tonight and introduce yourself! There is a chat where we will be given a piece for "inspiration" and then we'll create a layout. You can participate or just chat and watch what goes on! Click on the "chat" tab uner "The Place" and then just log in! Hope to see you there!

We're so glad to have you here! Just think of it as a paper crop where everyone comes together and works while they visit. Sometimes you chat more than work, and other times you get a lot done.
If you don't get any work done tonight, that's fine. Just introduce yourself, chat, watch what's going on, get a feel for how to participate, and then see all the layouts get posted at the end. We look forward to having you with us! You'll be cranking out layouts before you know it
The last Friday of every month is the Beginner Chat, preparing for the class term. What software do you have or are you still deciding?
Welcome!

Childsplay- make sure and hop on over to the Introduce yourself Forum and introduce yourself there! AT the end of the month there will be a random drawing for all those who posted for a free kit!
Have fun in the chat! Its lots of fun! I have a hard time scrapping and chatting so I just usually chat and then scrap later! But many people multi-task and Im jealous of them! :)

Yes, they do! Wow, that snuck up fast. Where did October go?!
Instructors send you the link and password to the first lesson the first day of class, as well as a Welcome email with procedures.
We have signups at 11:59 the night before, so to minimize emailing we just wait until registration closes and mail everyone at once.

DSU 110 - I've taken photoshop classes at the local community college but I thought it would be a good idea to see how this works with scrapping because I'm kind of new to it. I guess I'm hoping to learn some short cuts for stuff I'm already doing and a refresher for things I haven't really used much.

Ty :)
the two week classes running this month are $15 or $20 I think, and occasionally we'll have new mini classes for the same price, especially in holiday months
The 4-week classes are LOAD-ED! I know mine and Lauren's are over 100 pages. The PSP one is about 160 pages, broken into 4 parts, and cover making a detailed paper-style layout, a graphic/montage layout, and a premade elements collage (how to alter all the elements and photo retouching).
Hundreds and hundreds of screen shots too, packed. Detailed enough for a totoal newbie, but in depth enough for not-so-newbies too. You'll love it!
See you in January ;)

Hi there,
I live in the united kingdom, and i am interested in taking one of the classes. Obviously i am in a different time zone to anyone in the US, But don't know if this will be a problem if i want to take a class? What I basically need to know is if I would need to be online at certain times of the day, which may be in the middle of the night over here?
Amanda

Nope :) Classes are done at your own pace. Your instructor is available by email or in the forums. There is 1 chat a week - but it is not mandatory to attend.

I am in New Zealand and have taken several classes without problems. The only downside is that I usually can't make the chats but a transcript is usually posted so you don't miss that much and you can make use of the class forum to ask questions etc.
I try to do my chats by consensus. One month I had mostly Oz, NZ students, so we had chats in the morning ET so they could go in the evening after kiddo bedtime.
Sometimes I have more Europeans/Africans, so we try to have 1 or 2 chats for them. I ask the first week and everyone weighs in. Again, the chats aren't mandatory, and if you see anything in the transcript you wish you had been there for, just ask in the forum and we'll discuss it there.
Enjoy the classes! They're awesome and well suited to a worldwide group of students

:D I am so excited I found this site. I am new here and still figuring out all of the works. I have PSP, but I have not been able to use alot of the features on it. The layers thing just confuses the heck out me. I really would like to scrapbook on my computer ,this is going to be so much fun.
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/university/tutorials/ps_layers_ep.shtml
check this tutorial out, for PS but the concept is the same. My PSP class has the same tutorial for PSP, the same shapes even. I just haven't excerpted that one yet for the Tutorials section.
And be sure to come to the newbie chat the last friday of the month. I'm going to schedule a new one anyway as soon as the chat room is back, so sometime this week. Look for the announcement, you'll learn a lot.

Ok,
New here... oh let's say about 30 minutes or so. I am very interested in taking the Valentine class LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! the tearing effect. I have been looking all over the net for a tutorial to do this very thing. I have found other tut's and they are ok but this is so realistic and is exactly what I was looking for. My question is what program is the class geared around or will I be able to apply the concepts to Photoshop.
Update:
Duh! stupid newbies, lol. If I would only read I would have known the answer to my question. Sorry for the wasted post.

Hello!
I'm very new to digital scrapbooking but am an expert digital artist having used Photoshop for several years now. I would like to take the DSU110 course but looking at the syllabus, I'm wondering if it's going to be too easy. But I also see that I have to have taken the course before I can take a more advanced class.
Please advise.
Thank you very much

In general, at least for my classes, I just have gthe person herself decide what she needs. Only she knows what she knows, and only I know what's in the class. No way to combine unless she takes it, and then if it's too easy...well...so you make the best choice for you. Wouldn't it be nice if all universities were that way?! No more entry level classes just for the "degree!"
You'll love the classes, some great stuff to learn

I have PhotoShop Elements (the one with no numbers after it). Is this class coming up just for my program or for everyone that is a beginner? And do you have classes for photograph, not taking pictures, I studied that in college. But for altering photos in the computer in PhotoShop Elements? And just think I took many classes working in darkrooms. Go figure!
Kathy
I've had one PSE student use PSE 1, the original. She seemed to follow along, I didn't hear any issues from her.
We don't have a photo retouching class yet, though it's been suggested many time and hopefully someday soon we can find an author for it.
So the PSE 160 course starts May 1. If PSE 1 isn't compatible enough, you can download the 30-day trial of PSE 3, do the lessons with that in the group, then after it expires you can apply the lessons to your current version. You'll also see what 3 can do so you'll know for sure if you want to upgrade.
Will be good to have you!

Hello,
I emailed DSP directly but then I discovered this forum.
I am very interested in the PS courses but my goal is to use the graphics in web page design more than for true scrap booking. After all a web page is just a big scrap book with information! ;)
Is this an appropriate goal for these classes or should I look elsewhere?
Thank you!

Always looking for new inspiration.

if you already know about making web pages, and now just want to make them cool learning about graphics, then it's perfect!
I've had a few web designers in my classes, and some of them get hooked on scrapping too. Kissing cousins, very similar. I learned how to scrap using web-graphic tutorials, just had to change them from "awesome metal interface grid!" to something more feminine, LOL! Welcome to DSP!

Thanks Emma,
It's a funny thing isn't it? When I look at scrap book pages I see a mini webpage and when scrap bookers see a web site they probably think about how they can adapt it into a photo layout!
I think graphically the two are definitely kissing cousins and I look forward to learning about some of the great graphics I see being used.

Sorry, still a little confused. I'm assuming that once a week a lesson is sent to you. So if you can't work on it one week you can catch up the next week? You email questions to the instructor? Live communication is done with optional chats?
EDIT LOL, never mind found it.

After you register, you will receive further instructions by email from your instructor on the first day of class. Register NOW!"
glad you found it!
August term started yesterday, sign ups are still open until Friday I believe.
It's my bad that fall schedule isn't ready yet, I'm being really indecisive which classes to offer which month. Never take me to dinner, or clothes shopping, I'm the worst! Can't make a decision to save my life about this kind of stuff... :o
I WILL get it done very soon, but I know it won't be offered in Sept, will be most likely Oct or Nov.

peggy, to see the class listings, look at the top of this webpage on the right. you'll see a column titled "the university" -- under that you'll find the word "classes" -- click there and you'll get descriptions and sometimes syllabuses (my father would prefer syllabi) of the different classes.
That's the way to see them all; or just go to The Shop and click DSU and there are 2 or 3 pages of class choices there. Just Add to Cart when you pick the one you'd like. Which ones are you interested in?

Not sure if this is the place to ask these questions but here goes: I am interested in doing the introductory class in scrapbooking with PSP. I have only PSP7 and a slow computer.
1.Would I be able to adequately fulfil the class requirements with these? Things take a long while to downolad on my current set up and I can't afford to upgrade yet. To work on anything larger than 6"x6" at 200ppi in my PSP programme takes forever for each little activity to process.
2.What is the safest method of payment? When does the next class start and what is the registration date?
3. I am a beginner at scrapbooking and my imaging programme. would that exclude me from participating effectively in this class?

#2 - You can pay by credit card, paypal, or check/money order through the store. The store is completely secure for paying over the internet. The next class starts in October and registration is open now.
#3 You will want DSU 130 which is for beginners. Check the pre-requisites but you should be just fine :)
1.Would I be able to adequately fulfil the class requirements with these? Things take a long while to downolad on my current set up and I can't afford to upgrade yet. To work on anything larger than 6"x6" at 200ppi in my PSP programme takes forever for each little activity to process. This class only has downloads for the lessons, which are html web pages. We make all our elements and papers from scratch using the lessons. In lesson 4 I have some selected downloads, but you can use the Plopper I used, or choose your own graphics; anything you already have downloaded will be fine. Downloading Ploppers is fast and free or cheap.
2.What is the safest method of payment? When does the next class start and what is the registration date? All payment options are secure. Mailing a check might be the most secure but the slowest, but the fastest is credit card and also secure from the cart, and credit cards are protected from online theft (debit cards are not). But since class is starting in October, you'll have plenty of time to sign up and use whichever payment you prefer. You'll get an email October 1 with instructions on how to access the lessons, the forum, and the chat room.
3. I am a beginner at scrapbooking and my imaging programme. would that exclude me from participating effectively in this class? It's designed for beginners to to intermediates. Starts from square 0 on up. The only thing you have to do is have your software installed and know how to open it! If you want to do the First Page Tutorial beforehand, that would be helpful to you. If that's too hard, don't worry about it.
Looking forward to having you!

I'm interested in taking Intro to Scrapping with PS, but have some questions. I work full time and would probably only be able to devote an hour a day to classes. Is this enough? I have PS 7- am I better off getting CS? Can I print out all the info given, so if I can't complete in 4 weeks, I could always work on the lessons on my own?
Thanks for any info
Amanda
10-05-2005, 09:19 AM
All lessons are on your own time - you never have to be anywhere at anytime except maybe if you want to attend the chats. It's all self paced :)

Thanks. What about PS 7- should I get CS or am I okay with PS7?
When can I register for November classes?
Amanda
10-05-2005, 09:36 AM
You are fine with 7. You can register in the store any time.
We'd love to have you! An hour a day is MORE than enough. I'd say each lesson takes between 1-4 hours depending on experience. The class is written in CS, but 7 has worked fine for many previous students. Registration for October ends today, but you can sign up for future months at any time.
See you soon!

Just went to sign up for this class for November and saw that it isn't being offered until January!! Any chance that will change? We're already 5 days into October, so I don't want to start late (plus pay a late fee).
Amanda
10-05-2005, 10:29 PM
Nope, it won't change. If its not offered in November then regular classes aren't offered again until January because in December we only do mini-classes. Hurry - you can only sign up for another hour or so tonight for October :)

What next? When do I get info to get started?

Should I get info to start the classes today?

I use MS PhotoDraw for my software of choice (a gift from my Mom). I am familiar- to a certain degree- with the software packages that the classes are taught for. PhotoDraw seems to be fairly comparable to them.
I am REALLY dying to know how to do many of the embellishment creations. Several of the simple tutorials have explained a few things, and I have been able to "convert" the techniques to PhotoDraw with success. Will I be able to do the same for an actual class?
Thanks in advance for your help!
-Christie
ah, that's hard to say! Which tutorial software do you find easiest to translate? that would be a clue as to which class you should sign up for. It's a risk, but if you're dedicated, you can make it work!

Hi Emma,
I live in Tucumán, Argentina. I'd like to start with your classes, but I have a question: what happens with the time difference? It's 14:15 here. Are the classes online? When do the classes begin? Thanks!
María
We don't have any events based on time zones except the two chats which are optional. The rest of the class is based on lessons I send out each week that you work on during your own time. Chat transcripts are posted immediately following the chat if you can't attend, but I think you will be able to. We do them around 10pm Eastern, so if you stay up a little late you can make it. How many hours off Eastern are you?
Class begins TODAY! Always the 1st day of the month.
My brother-in-law used to live in Buenos Aires, some beautiful travel photos and wonderful stories he brought back!

Thank you, Emma. I guess I'll start after my baby is born then (December). I really want to learn because we do not have Scrapbooking here in Argentina, and I'd love to bring this amazing hobby to my country. Good luck with your new baby!!

Mariquita

I use PSP8,9,10, and Animation Shop 3. These are great programs for anything graphics and photos. There are so many groups that have tutorials on these programs. MSN has a lot of them. I want to buy the Corel programs, but they cost so much that I will have to win the lottery. And I don't even play. mamawsandy

When you take these classes do you get a file of the lessons to download? I want to be able to print them out and follow along and use for future use so I don't forget the steps?

Yes you do. Get yourself a notebook to keep for future reference. Get some sheet protectors too because you will go back to your lessons from time to time. I still can't remember everything I learned, but I remember seeing it in a class.

Is this class compitalbe with Printmaster-Platinum 16 program? I'm having trouble downloading overlays. The white in color ones will not transfer. The colored ones copy as a hard-copy back ground (cannot see thru them).

It sounds like your program doesn't support transparent PNG files. You won't be able to use most of products with that program.

I have both programs. My 16yos knows them and utilizes them. I use PSE4 for photo organization and basic editing.
I once was an advid paper scrapbooker but do not have the time for that now.
I would love to scrapbook digitially but do not how to use the programs effectiviely for that.
Which class would be best for me to start with?
DSU160 – Adobe Photoshop Elements: Introduction to Digital Scrapbooking
or
DSU110 – Adobe Photoshop: Introduction to Digital Scrapbooking
Is there a difference in theses classes?
Looks like 110 is not offered until sept. if i took 160 would i be able to cross over to PS classes?
thanks.

Hi!!
I'd like to sign up for the DSU110, but I can't find it on the list of August Classes.
Do I have to wait untill september?
Thanks & Regards,

yep, each class is not offered every month, and August is 110's off month. In the store, click the drop down box in the 110 class and click September to sign up for it.

i! I'm totally new to digital scrapbooking (ANY scrapbooking, actually) and was wondering...If I master Photoshop Elements, will that be a good step towards later learning Photoshop? Or would Elements be sufficient for making some of the Elite-type layouts? I want to get really good at this thing, like you guys! LOL

Yes, and yes.
There are a *lot* of similarities between PSE and PS - so upgrading from PSE to PS is fairly straight-forward. Keyboard commands, menu organization, the overall "mind-set" of the two are very similar. For about a year I was using PS at home and PSE at work and other than missing a few features in PSE I use a lot in PS, I had no trouble bouncing back and forth between them (one was PC and one was Mac, at that!)
And, yes, you can create stunning layouts with PSE. The biggest advantage to PS comes when you start designing your own elements. And even then, you can do a lot with PSE.
there are very few pro designers who use PSE, but until reaching more of an elite level it'll last you a looooong time! And switching isn't too much of a stretch if you like software and aim high as you're doing. You'll love PSE! My advanced classes include a lot of presets to make it more functional for scrapping. Out of the box it's not great for making elements, so I use a lot of presets I made in PS to stretch it farther.

Thank you, Umajo, Kristen and Emma!! Nice to hear PSE will be good for me for now :) I figure I take whatever classes I can get my grubby little hands on now for PSE, get good at that, and maybe next year or so I can upgrade to PS. I'm just so excited about learning digital scrapbooking!! Can't wait to start making nice designs! thank you for your help and I look forward to working with you :)

I have PSP 7,8.9, and 10, and a trial copy of 11. Do your lessons work in PSP? I would like to sign up for some of the lessons, but unless I can work with these programs, it would not be useful right now.
Please tell me what the best program is for your classes.
Sandyd aka mamawsandy
some classes are general, like photography and layout design, and some are software specific for PS, PSE, or PSP etc. We have lots of PSP classes, just debuted a new one this month, and working on another.

I have a question. I'm planning on registering for the intro to PSE for October. In that class, would I learn how to make a party invite, or is that covered in more advanced classes? My baby's 1st birthday is Dec8th, and I would love to be able to design the invites. It doesn't have to be anything super complicated, just nice-looking..
I guess I should also ask if you even CAN make invitations on PSE? And then, would I just take it to Kinko's to print, or how does that work?
the store won't let you sign up for a class if it's closed for that month, but you can use the drop down box to sign up for classes in advance. Usually there are at least 2 months listed, often more.
I do my graphics in PSE all the time for inviations. It's really just a mini scrapbook layout. You choose the size and add your graphics and text. I print them using a little program called Fine Print for Windows where I can put 4-up and have it print 4 copies on one sheet. Printing cards and invites is best on matte photo paper, greeting card, or presentation paper. It's much smoother than regular paper or cardstock, and my invites are so much better now that I use that paper.
Which reminds me, I need to do invites for my son's party tomorrow!
So that was a long answer to your question: yes. We don't do invites specifically, but you'll learn all the tools you need.

I would like to take the PSP class in November but .... I just got that program and it seems to be so very slow. Maybe I don't have the right config on my computer or something. I'm using Picture It 99 now and feel limited when listening to some in the chats. Is this something I can overcome and be able to use PSP or should I just forget it? Thanks, Vicki

Corel recommends 512MB Ram - so if you are running slow you may need to install more RAM.
LisasMom
10-06-2006, 08:11 AM
I'll check into it! Thanks Amanda!
PSP has slowness problems: if you do a forum search for "PSP slow" you'll hit a lot of threads that discuss this with solutions for speeding it up.
RAM for you is a huge problem: I'm running PSP XI with 1GB of RAM and I want to get 2GB! It's a RAM hog, though they've made steps to improve that in recent versions. PSP is the only software I use that makes me a RAM coveter!
After that, you can alter your settings to reduce the load PSP makes on the RAM. Also make sure when you use File>New to make sure the resolution is 200 pixels per INCH and not 200 pixels per CENTIMETER. If you use metric, then it's 80 pixels per cm. Common error most of us make.
You'll LOVE PSP! Keep at it, keep learning, you'll make friends with it quickly enough. I'm redoing the 130 class with free kits, video, new bells and whistles, so you'll love it. Happy to have you!

Is it OK to take more than 1 class at a time? I've had PSPX for 8 months and I know how to do a lot on it, but would like to take Intro To PSP for anything I might have missed. I would also like to take the PSP montage class, but I don't want to wait until Feb!! Should I skip the intro, take both, or try to be patient
Thanks!

Hi!!
My advice is: take the classes you will be able to handle. Do you have time to do them at the same time?
I took 3 classes in August: I had a great time and I enjoyed them very much, and really really studied and worked very hard on my homewrk.
I took 2 classes in September: and couldn't work very hard on them, because I didn't have the sme time I had in August. I couldn't work as hard as I wanted on my homework.
This month, I'm taking one. Not only because I don't have much time, but also because I want to be a part of some challenges and groups within DSP ;).
If you take a class or several classes, enjoy and try to learn as much as you can. Take good advantage of it/them!!
Hugs & kisses,
Mariquita
