Oops, I might not have been clear in my question.
Obviously, you'll need to have soemthing to use for your album, but I've never bought a mini-album kit to make a mini-album! I usually use one of the others I have. Is it ok to use a regular kit instead for the crop?

I don't want to commit to a time till I know there won't be anything going on that weekend, and that my internet won't be going wacked on me again. But as of now I'm planning to be there for hopefully most of it!
I plan to use the time wisely to work on my honeymoon album.

Whaaaaahhhh! The 22 is my birthday, and I agreed to switch with the other supv. so she could go to Las Vegas! I have to work both days and won't get home until after midnight. Rufnsnufn ferntnsnufn. I'm going to miss EVERYTHING.
On a higher note, a little bird told me you should all make the Ghosts and Goblins chat when it's announced... if you are into mini-albums.
*whistles*
Edit: Oh, wait! I went back to look at the times again - let me check with my ghostie buddy and see if she wants to co-host a wee hour one!

Angel, we will have a mini chat at the top of each hour and the rest of the time use our mini album kits to make pages. If there is no host signed up, then there will be no mini chat that hour. We are basically just rooting each other on to finish projects and give each other ideas and constructive critisism and get in line for the bi-weekly drawings and the big $20 prize in December. :) Thanks for asking!

Edit: Also how does a min kit work? is it a specific size or can I do the layouts for any size album. Gosh I am such a newb
Stacey Jewell Stahl

You can post ANYTIME! To be part of the bi-weekly drawings, you must post in the other thread that your album is completed . . . otherwise there are no restictions on when to post. The chats are a fun way to be at a virtual crop and encourage each other. I think I'll post as I get each page done, but we'll see. :)

10-12-2005, 11:55 AM
Hey, Waterqueen--welcome aboard to the mini-album challenge. I'm having such a great time with the mini-albums.
To answer your question about how the minialbum kits work, they come in different sizes--either 4x6 or 8x8--I like the 8x8 best, but it depends on what your project is. Each kit consists of a set of plopper pages--already decorated, and some even with titles, so you just paste in your photos and add journaling. I love their ease and flexibility: you can throw together a simple but beautiful page in no time at all by just doing the photo pasting and journaling, or you can change the colors, add other elements, clone out parts you don't care for, add your own titles--the sky's the limit, just as with any other LO.
Check out the mini-album kits in the DSP store to get some ideas. Also, something I didn't realize when I started is that some of the mini-album kits have coordinating regular-size kits, with more elements you might like to add to the your mini pages: tags, mats, brads, and other cool stuff. Check it out!

Okay, Stacey, I can host. What I'd like to do is re-offer the Ghosts and Goblins mini-kit that KY Bumpkin and I made. It was available as a chat only freebie, so this can be a make up date for it. We made it together, and she has given me permission to re-offer it, on this mini-album weekend so close to Halloween. I will also offer up the "devil in me" chat freebie kit as well, as it coordinates with the mini album.
Now, all that said, it is not imperative that we use that kit for that hour. SO...for anyone who comes to my (or maybe "our" - KY may co-host with me) chat in the middle of the night, and uses a mini album kit from the store, and posts at least one completed page from it by the end of chat (dig this run on sentence), I'll send some freebie elements, which may or may not all coordinate but will be the equivalent of how many elements are usually in a kit. Good stuff to use.
So may I have the 1 am Saturday night/Sunday morning slot please? And should I specify which store kit they are to use, or should it be any?
Gah. Since I've just added a large bite to my "to do" list, let me get on it.
Edit: Um, uh-oh. Was I not supposed to announce the plan for the chat in the thread?
Judyy
10-15-2005, 09:52 AM
No, I'm glad you announced it, Elisabeth--I've been wondering that also--whether we can discuss possible challenges in this thread.
I've signed up to host two hours of the crop, and I'd like to do some sort of challenge, but I'm not sure what sort of challenge would be appropriate. So I guess I'm fishing for ideas. A little help?
Stacey Jewell Stahl
10-15-2005, 11:08 AM
Hmmmm. . . we can announce our challenges! Why not? I'd like to challenge people to gather their photographs in the first hour, cropping and manipulating as needed. Clone out that pesky light switch in the background, apply a filter, mask if necessary. Save each photo in a separate folder to use in the next hour. I'm waiting to sign up for more slots so I can take a couple that are left over.
Judy - you could do a quote challenge!!! Bring some fun quotes to your chats and post them here afterwards.
Elisabeth - you do not have to specify a mini album kit. You may come up with a challenge or just chat and motivate. I'll add you to the schedule! WOO HOO!

10-15-2005, 01:24 PM
I've got a theme for my hour. Since it is 9am on Sunday morning, my theme is REFLECTION!. It's still kinda early, so maybe not everyone is ready to leap right in get cropping. So have a cup of coffee with me & reflect on what you have done so far. Are you happy with it? Does it need some tweeking? If you want to get right in onscrapping then please do, but if you'd rather take some time & look at what you have done & maybe chat & ask for opinions on it, then please join me at 9am.
Elisabeth
10-15-2005, 03:46 PM
That's a great idea, Stacey!
Donna, no, don't let my comments change your plan of action; I was just trying to think of some way to get folks into the chat room in the middle of the night, since that's the only time I can host! I'll have a preview up soon of what I've come up with.
I have some other ideas to throw out there, though: (edited to reflect Jewell's note on 5 minute chats vs. hour chats, below)
1001 ways to use this Mini-Album Idea Hour - Host links to the first mini album in the store and for ten minutes the group comes up with themes it can be used for, then in a few minutes the focus is shifted to another album. This is to get our creative juices flowing; other people might have a different use for the album than you thought of. (Things that make you go "hmmmm".) The host should take the chat transcript and send to the store so they can put the ideas in the description if they want.
Recoloring a Mini-Album hour - challenge the group to recolor pages from a mini album to suit their needs for a later hour crop, then post an image to show what they recolored it to. This would work for a five minute chat.
Journaling for mini-albums - Talk about how you can get meaningful journaling into small spaces. This might work for a five minute chat.
Make a Mini-album from a store kit - the host challenges the group to use any store kit to create 4 x 6 ploppers; their own new Mini Album! Five minute chat would work. For an hour long chat, a kit could be set beforehand, and the host could walk the group through making one. I wish I could do this one; I won't have time to do the prepwork, so if it doesn't get done for this weekend, I'll do this chat another time.
DSP Store Kit Review Challenge Hour - this could be an hour we all work to write reviews for the mini kits (or any kits) we've bought but not reviewed. It would be nice for the end of the weekend activities when we've all used our kits. There used to be a challenge up for reviewing 20 kits; not sure if it's still in effect, but if it is, here is a good time to encourage each other to do it.
Not necessarily related to mini-album chat ideas:
Basic element making for Newbies hour. Cupcake has temporarily ceased the regular chats, so this could be a chance for someone to share a quick tut on ribbon making or grunge stamping.
Kit Idea Challenge Hour - the host could collect kit ideas for an hour, then present it to the design team. We always seem to come up with these in other kinds of chats, and yet here is a great opportunity to take them all down in one place. Ones I can think of that have been suggested are kits for EMTs and Nursing.
Stacey Jewell Stahl
10-15-2005, 03:57 PM
Z - you have outdone yourself with ideas!!! I LOVE IT! However there is one slight problem. It's a mini chat you are hosting. Only 5 minutes. However, there is an easy solution - keep chatting! I'll post that your chat will be for an hour if you like. Let me know. WOW - it's no wonder you are the boss. You got the goods, baby.
Elisabeth
10-15-2005, 04:18 PM
OH! I thought some of them were prep chats for the whole hour, like Stacey's Reflection and Feedback idea (which is fab) and then some were "Fill in your Album" chats for that time. Oops!
Mine is going to follow your guidelines, with the exception that I'll be using it as a make-up chat for the Halloween chat freebies as well. So I'll be in chat the whole time giving out the links for that.
Preview my challenge details and the freebie HERE (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=57211)!
Now, off to get that sucker zipped up with tou file. Hope to see you there!

I'm not going to be able to do any scrapping Sunday morning, since I have to leave my house about 10:15am and I hate working with a deadline. I figured I do the 5 minute mini chat & then just hang out in the chat room & invite people to join me & talk about their projects if they want.

Someplace I saw an album made from old 5 inch floppies. The photos (layouts?) were glued to both side of floppies and they were strung together on a chain. It looked GREAT! Of course there was a hole in the middle of each, but since the example had used several photos on each floppy, they were arranged to avoid that hold. I am thinking a template could be made with the hole in the middle and new layouts could be arranged to incorporate the hole into the design.
Now, if I just had even ONE floppy I could make a template and share. Really...I don't think I have any. Maybe I could ask my more computer savy neighbors.

Hi Stacey,
I'm trying to figure out what to do in my crop. I don't think I quite understand the 'rules' right. I thought that each crop had to be centered around a DSP Store kit, yet I see some members are 'doing their own thing' so to speak and working on other topics that aren't directly about using a DSP Store mini-kit for the crop? I'm not quite sure what to do. My original idea was to do a 'crop down' chat on how to crop down a kit and design your own mini-kit - but I thought you told me I couldn't do that? So, I'm not sure what to do at this point.
Elisabeth
10-19-2005, 06:57 PM
Yay Rayne! You got your photos!
Laura, no, I'm not doing a heritage chat, that was a side comment I made about the mini album I'm actually trying to assemble. I am using "Eternity" from the store for an album on my grandparents.
BUT - that is not my challenge. My challenge details can be found here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=57211)!

Hi Stacey,

Rosemary, my original idea was to have 5 minute chats every hour - hostess choice on what to chat about - so we could crop the rest of the hour til the next chat. As usual, clever DSP members have rolled with the ball and come up with cool stuff to entice people to come to their chats! It looks like some people are doing full hour chats too! The only rule I'll mention is about the drawing for the mini album challenge - you have to use a DSP mini album kit to be eligible. So, go ahead and do your "crop down" chat - it's a very clever idea and I'm sorry I squashed it before. :)

Wow, everyone's coming up with such cool ideas, and Mandy and Elisabeth, your goodies look great!
I don't really feel equal to creating a kit or elements as you guys have done, but I do have some talent related to writing. So I'm working on a handout about journaling ideas (just a page or two, but packed with ideas), with a few special tips for journaling in mini-albums (that is, tight spaces), and with links to examples in the DSP galleries. I'll email this document to anyone who comes to the mini-chat during my hours--noon on Saturday and Sunday. No sneak peeks, but here's the title as a little enticement:
"The Resisting Writer: Ideas for Scrappers Who Avoid, Dislike, or Otherwise Have a Difficult Relationship with Journaling"
My DH says the title is about half the document, but no worries--he's a master of exaggeration for effect. :D

I prepped my photos for nieces's ABC album (I hope I don't confuse people too much by working on an ABC album for another challenge during this crop - My ABC album is 5x7, so it's a mini album in size and I'm doing these for Christmas presents).
I also finished some pages for my nephew's ABC album. I'm short a couple of photos and will take those tomorrow. My batteries died last weekend when I wanted to get more shots, but I did get a couple good ones that you'll see in my recent pages "Miracle" and "Quality."
This goes fast!!! Now to start working on the pages for my niece now that I have her photos ready (except for the D page - I want to get a shot of her tomorrow with her "Daddy.")

Wow guys, what great progress you are making!
My chat at 11 pm is on cropping down regular kits to fit make your own mini-album.
I've summarised my points into a little handout. If you'd like to download ahead of time or keep this for reference, I've included it here.

Wow, everyone's doing such great things with their minis! I've got about 7 pages done in my mini, along with 5 more in my ABC. It's taken me all day--in between loads of laundry, emailing students, and, oh yeah, going out for a bite with DH. But I'm pretty happy with my results.
Rosemary, thanks for the handout! Looking forward to your chat.
Here's my brother's mini, so far:

Oh I've been busy and mad that the site was down for me for most of today!
A lot of people were interested in the easy peasy plaid, so if someone explains to me how to attach the file here I'll add it.

Judy, love the album and your brothers poems. He looks and sounds like quite a character, someone I'd love to get to know!

Well, this was my hour to host and the chatroom is down so here is the link to my feeble little freebie.

It is a collection of backgrounds for a very old Christmas card in an unusual color pallete of oranges.

Feeble? Are you kidding me? Those are so pretty, Laura--thanks!!!
I'm bummed about the chat room being down. Rats! I wanted to talk about Ready-Made or Found Journaling, which we didn't get to yesterday.
Anyway, I'm in the same boat as Mandy--if someone will explain to me how to attach a file here, I'll make my 4-page journaling tip sheet available in this forum.
Thanks for the compliments on my brother's album. I think he's going to love it. :D

I missed everything today because I couldn't get on the site. I'm scrambling right now to view everyone's albums and I'm so geeked about the cool stuff everyone did.

You can attach a file when you post a reply to a thread. On the bottom is a spot called "Manage Attachments" - click that and browse for your file. Hit okay and TA DA - you have an attachment.

OK, then, here it is--four pages of clear, persuasive, engaging prose on the subject of photo-journaling. I hope this is useful for someone!

The chat I signed up for also did not take place. I made you a mini kit which was used in this layout. There are links to my freebies, but get them soon as I don't know how long I will keep the links up. This is the first time I have made a kit so I hope it's okay.

With no chatting today my grand total for the heritage album done with the wedding mini-album (557dsp) is a grand total of 20 pages. I still have more to do so I will probably just keep going for a few more weeks.

Oh, and I am not colorizing any of the photos...these are just as scanned with very little repair or cleaning. I thought they would be more authentic that way.

Tammy, I was bummed too! Not sure what happened.
I'll do another one of these in November, I'm thinking the 19th and 20th. This past weekend was a huge blast!
