View Full Version : October Step It Up Challenge

Lauren

For october the challenge is to improve a GRAPHIC styled layout - You arent limited to any particular kit or overlay choice - its up to you - Graphic styled layouts are those which do not entail 3-d realistic effects - They are generally flat - can include montage styles or advertisement style layouts
Post your layouts to the Step it Up gallery - read the constructive criticism of the members and improve your layout and post again- . At the end of the month the members will vote on the most improved layout to win a prize

You dont choose a layout - you create a layout - then post it in the step it up gallery - everyone comments on ways they think it could be improved - then you try to improve it via their comments and repost - the most improved layout wins

Lauren, does the layout needing improvement for this challenge need to be newly made this month? I have a graphic style layout I made almost two weeks ago and it does need some stepping up. Could I enter it or should I look through my photos and start a new layout?

I posted two layouts.

One using a kit (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=56690&cat=536&page=1).

One with merged photos (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=56691&cat=536&page=1). I've never done this style of graphic layout before.

I'd like to know how to make either or both of them better than they currently are.

In the comments on my layout (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=56691&cat=500&page=1), Lauren said:

Yes I thinkyou need to be heavier with the feathering - I find 100px is a good size brush to use if you are using a feathered brush - or a 50 - 100 px selection if you are doing it by selection

I'm moving the discussion here because I've got questions and I'm open to a bunch of answers. I didn't do this with a feathered brush or by selection. I used layer masks on each of the small photos, and actually, I think on the large one too. I did use a large feathered brush to get rid of the hard edges on the small photos using black on the mask, and also to remove some of the large photo as well. I then lowered opacity on each of the smaller photos. I experimented with the blending modes on the various layers. None of this looked right to me.

I'm pretty sure I missed at least one entire step. I'm not sure what that step is. I ended up doing several layers of brushwork, and although they came out nice, they weren't what I actually wanted to do with this layout.

I think I need a good tutorial. Anyone have one?

I received a lot of CC for my third version. Thank you all. However, you all didn't agree on everything, so I tried a couple of different things out. I can't decide which is better, so I still need more CC. Version #4 (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=57009&cat=536&page=1) and version #5 (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=57008&cat=536&page=1).

BTW, I went back to the reddish hue on the background photo, because that's what my son prefers. Since it's mostly his layout, I figured his opinion mattered too.

Here is a kinda, sorta version 2 (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=57082&cat=536&page=1) of my graphic layout. I saw one that Karen (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=57034) did and decided to try to duplicate some of it.

I think I did a reasonable job on this one. Only two photos instead of three because these particular photos didn't lead themselves to three.

I'm open to making it better. CC requested.

Version 3. (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=57178&cat=536&page=1)

Well, I've walked away from the layouts (so to speak) and have decided that verision #5 (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=57008) is THE one. I'm still not tickled pink with it, but I don't know if I ever will be.

Thank you all for your advice and help concerning this. It made all the difference. Now onto another one. I'm thinking a group of photos of my newest baby "sunbathing" (laying in the sun because of jaundice) with lots of white space.

Robin, you have also learned a very important lesson. There comes a time when you declare a layout done, and go on to the next one. For me that comes when I decide to print. Once it is printed, that is it.

Well, I've started on another graphic layout. I based it on one of Emma's sketches (my first time using a sketch, it was interesting) and aimed for a magazine page look. I already have two versions of it, as I couldn't resist filling up all that "white space" with some blue.

This (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=57815&cat=536&page=1) is my second go at this LO. I'm really embarrassed with my first one. I didn't use anything that I've learned. I must have had a bad head day. I think this one is a big improvement. It's a difficult picture to work with as it's so colorful, so bright. But I did play down the bg and rearranged everything. I'm not new around here, but I'm new to these challenges. This is fun.

Following Lauren's suggestion I added corner rulings (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=58048&cat=536&page=1) in blue on my Version 2 layout. I tried them with a grunge brush and with a round brush. The round brush won out.

I think the blue might be too bright, but it wasn't blue enough when I was using the grunge brush. I also tried changing the title to match the rulings. I ended up posting it without that change because then the blue WAS too bright.

I'd like some comments on how you like this change and also about the color.
