I'm taking DSU110 and one of the lessons says to use the color replacement tool which is supposed to be under the healing brush. This is not the case in PS7. Does anyone know where I can find it?
Thanks

That tool was new in PS CS and doesn't exist in PS 7 which is why you can't find it.

Ok- now I know why I couldn't find the tool. But, I'm having trouble using the replace color.
I have 1 picture opened and a page of alphas that I have saved as a jpg file. the alphas are the background.
How do I change the color of the alphas to a color in my picture. I tried following Emma's lesson, but I don't get it. I click on a color in the alpha which I want to replace. (the foreground color). Then I click on a color in the picture as the replacement color. Then what?? It says to then open the replace color box, use the eyedropper to click the color in the toolbox. I don't get it. Any suggestions? I'm using PS7
Thanks

You can't do that because you don't have the tool.
You can try the Hue and Saturation method, but that doesn't work as perfectly.
A new method that I've recently seen says you use the color picker to pick the color you want. Open the color dialog (double click on the foreground box). Check the H# and S# and write it down.
Go to the document you want to change. Use Image--Adjustments--Hue and Saturation. Put your new H# and S# into the boxes and adjust the Lightness to make things the right color. This will change the entire paper and or element. You can try to select just the item you want to change. Sometimes that will work to change just that item.
Try it and let us know if it works.

I suggest you post in your class forum so that emma can help you specifically.

Nevermind that last comment - Emma's here and told me she told you to post here :) Guess I should check with her before making a comment like that - considering she's sitting right here next to me :)

No problem Amanda!
Starling- tried what you said with the Hue and Saturation- worked great on one of the elements (Gold disc alphas), but didn't work another (Metal charms). Could that be how they were created or something?

Actually, in PS7 there IS a 'replace color'. Its under Image, Adjustments, Replace Color. Then you use the eyedropper tool to select the color you want to replace. Then you go to the color you want to replace your chosen area with. You can use the sliders, but if you have an exact color, you can click on the color swatch, which brings up the color picker.

I think Starling was saying I don't have the Color Replacement Tool (under the healing brush tool).
I know there is a "replace color" under image-adjustments, but I still don't get how to use it.
If I use the eyedropper and click on the color I want to replace in my photo, then click on the color I want to use (let's say in the same photo- but I don't think that matters).. then what? Nothing happens just doing this, so I know I need to do something else, but don't know what.

Well, you have another alternative- a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer. You can make a selection of just that part you want to change color, then make the hue/saturation adjustemnt layer. Click the colorize box and adjust your sliders until you get the color you're after.
Somewhere I found a tut on how to use the Image/Adjustment/replace color - I'll have to find it.
too bad PS 7 doesn't have that tool, it's great for smaller areas as shown in the lesson
The reason there are so many ways to change color is because each graphic is different. Depending on if you want to change a large or small area, change a distinct area or all-over tint change, etc. So knowing your program's possibilities makes the most successful choice in whats needed for the job. The area on the Hue/Sat adjustment and then the color tool shows what happens when you use Hue on an entire layer and it whacks out the wrong colors, LOL! That's when a more targeted tool comes in handy. Or vice versa
