I cannot wait any longer to post the next challenge! Here it is, and it is time for a bootcamp round where we declare a winner!

We are using Country Grunge Kit by Marcee Duggar. http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=45576&cat=739&page=1

So you need to create a layout using this kit and have JOURNALING as an important element of your layout.

Here is my layout. http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=61548&cat=1371

If you need some guidance on how to journal, judyy wrote a journaling article.
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8166&page=3 You will find the article as an attachment called “resistingWriter.doc” in her reply at the top of that page.

Here are links to some layouts that show a wide style of journaling.
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=59604&cat=500&page=1 shows detailed storytelling.

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=59411&cat=500&page=1 uses my son’s voice. It wasn’t actually all said at one time; I gathered these over time because he is such a pirate nut.

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=57389&cat=500&page=1 is similar to the pirate layout in just being a collection of things my boy has said. I did have 3 of these statements darker, bolder than the rest to create my triangle.

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=55439 catches a conversation between Alethea and her son.

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=43321&cat=500&page=1 is a letter written by a family ancestor

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=38083 here is a great page for telling about oneself.

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=60592&cat=994&page=1 shows journaling describing an event.

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=60409&cat=994&page=1 describes a person.

This will be our first challenge where we get to vote on which was the best layout! At the end of the 2 weeks, I will select the 10 layouts I think show the strongest design and journaling. I will set up a poll so we can all vote which is the best!

Please ask questions if I have not been clear enough!

Right on, Karen! I'm so glad you posted early and what a great challenge! I'm HORRIBLE about my journaling and this challenge is just what I need. AND we get to vote! I'm assuming that the voting will be on our last posted layout? Or do we need to delete the first versions we post, once we edit?

I'm so excited! And now I'm off to download! Yay!!!!

What a great challenge Karen!
This is one of my favorite kits!

I know what I want to say, what picture I want to use - now I just have to put it all together!

Thanks for the idea and all the examples - great challenge!

I need to be forced to do more journaling. ...[sigh]... It is not one of my strong points. I've downloaded the kit, now I need to figure out what I'm going to do with it.

Okay Karen, you really challenged me in this one. Journaling is SO hard for me. Here's my entry: Stylish, Gorgeous (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=61653&cat=1371)

Please leave CC, especially on the journaling!

BethyNixon

Got mine done.
Not 100% with it.

I'm concentrating on 12 things on once and just couldn't "see" this as I can some of my layouts.

I love the picture and the journaling - but the layout - something about the picture, coloring, etc.

Karen:

To make it easier on you, should we start a thread where we can post links to our FINAL layout. That way you can quickly see everyone's layout they are submitted to you for the judging round?

QUESTION:

I just love this kit but I'm having a problem getting journaling to show up.
I first used the white flowered paper but it didn't look right on the layout. When I switch to any of the other papers, it doesn't show up.

I've tried to add a vellum layer but it's still too dark.
Tried lightening the paper but it changes the look of it and makes it look odd.

I've doubled the text to make it darker then made it as big as possible but I just can't get it big enough without shrinking my picture which I don't want to do.

I could create my own paper or change the color of the ones I'm using but I SO like the color scheme in the kit and in my current layout. I don't want to mess with it too much.

It's a hard kit for me with a journaling challenge. Any thoughts? How are you all handling it?

Here's my current layout:

bethy, looking at the kit, i see some different journaling choices. you could pull either of the flower papers up large and select a journal box from between the flowers. or you could pull one of the "pebbles" up big and journal on one of them.

i also don't see any problem with creating a simple journaling box with a bit of texture on it.

Meg
11-15-2005, 11:15 AM
Bethy, I had the same problem. The way I solved it was to put a layer of yellow (pulled from the yellow elements/papers) beneath the red grunge paper, then lowered the red layer's opacity. Not perfect, but it kept most of the color and allowed the black print to show a bit better. I also chose a font that was fairly thick even unbolded.

it sounds like a lot of people are having a hard time with the journaling on this paper. would you want me to make up some simple journaling papers?

Well, I have got my first version of the layout ready to post, but i am not happy with it, so am ready for all the brains out there to throw the cc at me....http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=61924&cat=1371&limit=recent

I'd rip it into confetti. I have the journaling, alright. The problem therein lies with that. I have the journaling. I figured I should use this as a chance to tell the story of my cat. How she came to live with us and so forth. Only, it seems that to have it make sense to people, there are all these things I CAN'T get rid of, but should to make it fit. If I don't SHRINK the text more, it won't fit. If I SHRINK the text, you can't read it. I started in kind of an 10x8 format. Moved to 8x8. Then tried 12x12. I may see if 8x10 does me any justice. I just can't get this - plus there is ALL that red. OMG. And everything is so vibrant. When I add all of my text, the busy backgrounds and all the letters just look so BLOODY messy!! I am just too frustrated now to even START another attempt. I think it just might be one that doesn't get scrapped right now. Maybe I need to find some other subject. I just wanted to share my lack of progress with everyone!!! *shakes her head a little*

Make it a two-page layout.
Then you'll have the room you need!

Antiragweed
11-16-2005, 02:03 PM
I just tried that, but thanks for your idea. It still looks too busy. I also have tried doing an enlarged "sticker thing" but that just looks awkward. They call this a challenge for a reason. I'm certainly being challenged!! I might scratch the whole thing, start over with different photos. I kind of am forming an idea... or is it a headache? *LAUGHS* I don't know which. We'll see when I get to PictureIt!!!

I took the "have JOURNALING as an important element" very literally, and ended up with a layout (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=61990&cat=1371&limit=recent)that's all journaling and no photos<g> It was a 70s memories, so the colors and little flowers were perfect.

Thanks for all the positive comments on my first version! I tried to clone out the bright wrapper in the foreground, but made a horrilbe mess!! LOL!! So instead i changed the position of the photo and size of the frame and then resized back again, so it is still there but not as much of it showing, hopefully! I also sorted out the missing corner.
I am having problems with font choices and also the vellum journaling paper,i tried to fade the flowers on it but didnt get anything i liked.

I have added my entry for the fourth challenge - here's the link:http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=62134

Lisa is laughing at me because I worked all morning trying to figure out why my drop shadows did not show up at all. I knew I could not post it until I figured out why they were not showing up. So, I put in a SOS call to Lisa and within 2 minutes she figured out that sometime I had clicked on Hide all Effects. So, as soon as I changed it, I had drop shadows and could post the layout. Thanks Lisa, you are wonderful!!!

I used several techniques that I learned in her Path Class in this layout.

I did a two pager this time and lifted from myself :) . I had done this from a sketch for a crop on another site, so I had the pics already. Just changed out the paper. I hope that's ok. I like this one better than the other one.

I posted a message in the original thread that I would like to participate in these challenges. I know it's the 4th one, but I promise to be consistant from here on out. I've read over the whole thread, and I think I understand everything. I just have a few more touches to put on my lo and it should be ready for cc's.

Hey girls! I just discovered that Simple Scrapbooks Mag is asking for submissions with "exemplary journaling". If that doesn't fit this challenge, I don't know what does!

Woohoo, I finally got my first version up. I was swamped this weekend, and had to spend today doing my NKOTB revisions (more to come...), so while the DH went to play hockey, I finished this up, or at least got it ready enough to be posted for comments. I do think it's lacking, though I like the feel of it (or maybe it's just the great kit! Thanks Marcee!).

I see lots of familiar "faces" here too so I feel right at home.

Here it is: Version 1 - Morgan (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=62909&cat=1371).

I've been following the DET Boot camp challenge since the beginning, mostly because I learn so much from you all. I don't consider myself DET material so haven't participated ... can't imagine keeping up with you all, And I seem to have to ALWAYS change at the very least the color of any kit I use! :o I just can't help myself! I'd rather not be a once and again participant, but this time events pushed me to give it a try.

I was very intriqued with the emphasis on journaling and then saw Kristen's layout here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=61990&cat=1371) and so I 've now begun a project because I'd like to record my memories, the stories and the history about the place for my son and for my family. I'll be forever thankful to Karen B and to all of you for starting me on this journey!

I've posted version 3 (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=63432&cat=1371). Made some drastic changes (to me at least), my DH needs me to show him what I've changed...sigh. Sometimes though he does offer some great suggestions so I shouldn't complain.

I'm sorry I haven't been offering many cc's myself. I have had the flu since last Sunday and have only been on sporadically. I promise tomorrow that regardless of health I will look and leave comments. :o :o

I'm sorry I haven't been around much for the last week to leave comments. I just wanted to do a general comment here to everyone.

I am so impressed by the thoughtfulness that has gone into each layout for this challenge. Karen's challenge was hard for many of us, but I think we've all produced some wonderful pages that we can be proud of. The gallery is stunning to look at this week, gorgeous work!

I promise to be better about leaving comments in the next round, that crazy family thing kept getting in the way this week!
