I decided to use Kinkos to make my calendar this year. I am going to upload my photos and just have the plain photo (no scrapping). However, my photos are about 21 mb!! How do I make them smaller without losing the resolution when printing? I've changed the size to 11 x 7.50 (a little bigger than the actual calendar, but they will be okay when cropped). Resolution is currently at 300, but it doesn't change it that much when I drop it to 200. I need it to be 2.2 mb to upload to kinkos. My pixel dimensions are 3383 x 2250. If I make them smaller, it reduces the document size way too much.
I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I can't figure it out
Thanks!

Making it a 200 pixels per inch only drops it to 9.68M - I still need to get to 2.2

JPG? You can adjust your compression down some too.

Yes, they are saved as jpg. Here are the settings I show for example:
Pixel Dimensions 11.0 M
width 2400 pixels
height 1596 pixels
Document size
width 12 inches
height 7.98 inches
resolution 200
How do I adjust the compression down? I'm using PS CS

When you save as a jpg there is a slider to adjust :)

Well, I understand part of it. I guess I was supposed to be doing save for web, which I wasn't doing. So, when I do that, I can adjust jpg to medium and change the quality. It then gets me to 1.191 which is under the 2.2 that I've been trying to do.
The one thing I don't understand is, after I do this, if I go to image size, it shows 72 resolution, and the size is like 17x 23 and the pixel dimesions are 11 M. But then if I go to insert it into an email, it shows the size as 1.191.
Why does it show 2 different sizes?
Thanks for all your help Amanda!!

I don't use the save for web feature - so I can't help ya there! As long as you still have the same amount of pixels then you should be fine!

Do you use PS CS? I'm not sure where using CS you can adjust the slider when saving (except for save for web). I'm just a little concerned that they will print at 72 resolution and not 200

Yes, I use CS. You've got your PSD right? File>save as>choose a JPG, save, then a box will pop up where you can adjust the compression 1-12. It will show you the file size at that compression down at the bottom.

Finally figured out what you mean!! Guess i'm a bit dense tonight. I did try sliding that to low, but when I go back and check the image size, it is still at 11 M.

Maybe I got it!! I keep looking at the pixel dimensions and see 11 M. I should look at the file size on the screen where I can change the quality. Is that showing me the size that I will be uploading? I'm assuming that is totally different that Pixel Dimension?

yes! and be sure to look in explorer at the actual file size. it can be a little different than the slider pop up box shows you. but it will be close. :)
