View Full Version : 6th Challenge - December 13th to 26th

Here it is! I can't wait any longer to post the next challenge. This round will challenge us to take a closer look at ourselves by completing a self portrait. If you are anything like me, it will be difficult to find a photo of yourself taken within the last year. It's time for us to hand over our cameras to our spouses and families so that everyone can remember what we looked like some day.
For this challenge we will use the Evening in the Garden kit by Lisa Carter which can be found here: http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=64481&cat=738&limit=recent
Also, the Floral Border Brush Set 1 by Suzanne Walker which can be found here: http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=55676&cat=742
My layout for this round can be found here: http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=65459&cat=500&ppuser=18175
And finally, since it's Christmas and all, I have made a prize that I will send to the top 3 entrants in this round. I realize that judging can be stressful at times, but heck, that is what the DET have to endure, so we may as well practice. I will pick the top 10 layouts similar to what Karen did for Round 4 and hold a vote. Hopefully you will all like the prize which is an Art Nouveau brush set I made and can be seen here: http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=65253&cat=500&ppuser=18175
Phew! That was long winded. I can't wait to see everyone's layouts!

Ohhhhhh such a hard challenge. I lve the kit you picked out ... I just downloaded it the other day. Your LO is so amazing. I hope that I can bring out something as beautiful. The brush set is awesome too. :) Thanks for this challenge Laura.

Bethy,
I think this kit is great too! I just found it this morning when I sat down to start my layout. I had actually planned to use another kit, but this one completely changed my mind. I hope the challenge was worth the wait - I saw your comment on my layout about posting the challenge already and laughed out loud.
Thanks for the nice comments. I can't wait to see your layout because I know if it is anything like what you have created in the past, it will be worth checking out!
Laura
Great choice of a kit (and good pairing with the brushes)! I just downloaded it a few days ago and thought "this is so beautiful!" But you had to throw in the part about "make a layout about you." First, I just made one for the Comedy Crop...but mostly I thought "this kit is sooooo not me." I love it...but for a page about me, I would normally choose a snappy, bright, crazy kit. However, trying to pair this "grown up kit" with my not so grown up self, is what led me to my journaling. Yippee! This will be the perfect addition to a book about me during my 29th year.

I love that kit, but this is going to be the hardest challenge yet for me - I have never done a layout on Me..I keep putting it off!!:o Thanks for pushing me to do it now! Now to find someone patient enough to sit there for hours taking photos while I say "No, another"...!!!:D

Ew..... me. I know it needs to be done, though.
Hmm.

Surely I can't be the ONLY person lurking abour that actually LIKES the idea of doing a self portrait LO? I just did one for Mission Possible lol. I'm excited. I have been kinda hesitant about DLing Evening in the garden because I wasn't sure I would be using it...but too late for that now lol.
Good Luck All!!!

Well, I may end up sitting this one out but I love that kit choice. I dl'ed it and I have the brush set already, too, from a previous challenge. I might have to think on this one a few days. I haven't taken any pictures of me in quite some time. I think the last were when my dd was around 1yr old. I will come back to this one...

Do it boo - even if you use an old picture.
*YOU* are an important part of your family and that needs to be documented.
I think a lot of us will find this hard to do but it's an excellent challenge!

I almost feel like I should apologize for coming up with the self portrait challenge. Almost, but I'm not going to. Our kids and family are going to want to know who we were and what the heck we used to look like.... some day in the future.
If you just can't bear the thought of using a traditional picture of yourself, remember that your portrait can be as abstract as you want it to be....

I'm in.. and you are right. Btw, don't feel bad for your idea. This actually could prove to be a very good challenge. The ones that make you put thought into it usually turn out the best.
Thanks Laura, for this challenge. It was difficult, but I love the kit and brushes you chose, so I had to give it a go.
Please leave CC!!

I've been wanting to try a challenge on DSP for weeks now... I hope you don't mind that I took this one up as my debut. I was just so WOW'ed by the self portrait layouts and the creativity that everyone poured into their work that you've inspired me to give it a go myself. Was interesting... certainly beautiful papers and brushes to work with and I'm a sucker for soft florals.

I've just read through the challenge. I missed participating in the last one...my hard drive 'crashed and burned!' Some things were backed up (all of my photos, thank goodness) a lot of things were not backed up (kits, layouts, downloaded programs, are you getting the pitiful picture here?) Anyway, I now have a rebuilt computer and am in the process of trying to put everything back together again. If time permits, I'll try to post a layout for the challenge. In the meantime, looking at every one elses wonderful work has been a bright spot in an otherwise trying time. You are all doing some really special layouts!

I finally started this, after not knowing how I was going to pull together a layout about me, since reading the challenge! What to include? What to leave out? How many photos? How much can I cram in there? Alligators don't really go with Harry Potter! Omigosh - what do I do?
I finally kept it simple, and something that is meaningful to me.

AWOL or MIA? I'm back though. I've been in a slump, Christmas time is a hard time of year for me. I get a little overwhelmed by things and it all starts to come to a head. I think each year about how I have behaved, have I been naughty? Have I been nice... and I always seem to see so much room for improvement. But then as the next year carries on I seem to find myself slipping back into the same old routine.
This challenge isn't exceptionally hard for me, I've done LOs of myself in the past. I just think this time it is full of more resonant sounds. If anything this will challenge me to look at myself in a new way. Hopefully I can draw up all the good qualities that are so hard to see in our own selves and put them into a layout for people to look back on and laugh wondering if I was being honest or a little vain. :o

This challenge is at such an awkward time. I sometimes think I'll be able to make time to comment and help other "privates" with their layouts but then I realise how much I have yet to do and put this challenge on the backburner again. So I'm just going to APOLOGIZE for my lack of support this time because I truly want to be here. My obligations to work and family are pulling me thin, too bad you don't lose the weight in the process - being stretched to your limit would come with a reward!! Good luck to those still trucking along and hopefully the challenge facing us in the new year (ooooh pressure to the first challenge of the new year idea maker) will provide us with simplicity, relaxation and most of all... TIME. Happy Holidays to everyone.
