Question What is the difference between True Type & Open Type fonts?

Going through my font stash I can see that I have many True Type fonts, but I also have many Open Type Fonts.

In my use of these font types, I have not seen any difference between them.

Just what IS the difference between, and how can these differences benefit my digiscrapping?

True Type Fonts

Open Type Fonts

Interesting. I had never thought about this before.

So basically, Microsoft just had to keep up with Apple and made it's own font system. LOL

Not quite the answer I was looking for - but thanks.

I'm looking more for if there are supposed to be more characters with one than the other and if so, how do I find them.

All of this was prompted by an email I got which had an interview with someone who was saying
Quote:
Without access to an OpenType feature or glyphs panel, you’re restricted by decisions I made concerning the standard character set and how it’s intended to function. With OT access, you can override my choices. (MyFonts June 2012 Newsletter)
But I have no real clue as to how to do any of that, or why they are even there, and if I have access to those things or not - and if I do, how do I access them?

OpenType has extra features all in one file... ligatures, swashes, small caps etc. Access with the type palette > character palette menu.
