G "Morning Grannies !!!! Is it allowed for a GIT (which I am ) to invite someone into the grannie thread. I do not want to inadvertantly break any rule ( yeah, like there are acutally rules here LOL) if which I am unaware. In my travels around DSO , I've "met" a funny, irreverent, insightful gal who would be a blast here. And, she's a real grannie !!
To all of you who are doing the self portrait challenge... NICE to SEE you. Taking your own photo is soooo much harder than it looks !!! And by the way, we all look great !!! To those not doing it, you should stop by and check it out. It's lot's of fun! Great way to learn those new cameras !!! hint hint !!
Well, back to cooking in anticipation of tonight's Superbowl !!!!!! Seeing as I am a Pat's fan this is just gonna be a rocking night. I'm going to my BFF house. She is setting up the TV outside so we can watch the game from the comfort of her hot tub ??? She is a hoot !

It just is unbelievable to me that your mind prefers the metric system. It should be so much easier than what I am accustomed to, but for some reason my mind refuses to use it!

Just a note: for those of you with allergy problems.. you can also temporarily put a crown/cap back on with Vaseline as well.. The temp cement does work better, but there have been reported cases of allergic reactions to the surrounding tissue. Just a random thought from your friendly dental hygienist.

Okay, Fran, now you've done it!! Did you REALLY mean get a retired math teacher going on this subject?
In a study done years ago, the U.S., Liberia and Burma were the only three countries in the world that hadn't officially adopted the SI (or International System of Units which is the official name for the metric system). Liberia and Burma ain't talkin' about official policy so we may be the last one standing with the Imperial/English/Standard system of measurement. Or maybe we're just the royal emperor of an increasingly worrisome economy? (And why is it called the "STANDARD System of Measurement" in this country when 99% of the world doesn't use it???????? Hmmmm??????????? )
Already some other countries have quit buying goods from us unless they are sized metrically, and in 2010 the EU will accept only goods in metric dimensions. But the U.S. manufacturing industry, among others, has fought tooth and nail against the change that was tried in the 70s (?) partly because of the immense cost of retooling all of the machinery. Think about the entry of "foreign" cars into this country -- mechanics had either to be able to afford two sets of tools or choose between metric and standard -- and they already had standard. And where, we may ponder, is the American car industry now headed? (I know there are lots of other reasons, but this doesn't help!)
If you've managed to stay awake so far.......... The metric system has been proposed off and on in the U.S. for more than 200 years with no action. It's the international measuring system for math and science because it's so precise and so easy because it's based on a Base 10 system like everything else we do in arithmetic. Early on, though, my 8th graders invariably complained big time about having to learn metrics -- but to a class over the years, they always ended up saying, "This is SO much easier -- why don't WE use this system?"
As far as using metrics is concerned, for people our age it's like talking in a second language. I must admit that I've never learned to think in metrics -- I have to pause a few seconds to "translate." But I guarantee that I could teach anyone who can understand our money system how to use the metric system in under an hour! They might need a cheat sheet for a while to remember terms, but then think back to learning the English/Standard system in the first place -- what the h-e-double-l is a peck, anyway??? And a foot? It equals 12 inches because that was the average length of the feet of British soldiers a million years ago -- please!!!
Oh, I feel SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better now!!

Well, HI all! My name is Roberta and CarolynD introduced me, well sort of...hehe. I was at the granny chat last week and really liked it. I wanted to come sooner but couldn't find the thread, and then the old brain let it drift off as is a granny's wont.
Anyway...I just have to comment on this metric system discussion. Since I'm a Canadian - and I'm old, I remember well when we went to the metric system. Everybody was MAD let me tell you. We thought we would never be comfortable with it. The first thing I had to learn was to convert pounds to Kilograms so I could figure out how much the meat cost. The next thing was miles to kilometres so I could know how far I had to drive. And Celsius! Don't get me started. I still don't know what the temperature is half the time!!
But eventually you accept that time and progress are passing you by, and you just fumble along as best you can.
Great stuff here! I got a lotta reading to do.

I can SO relate to this !!! this is what happens to me when I get throttled(as well as the bit in your post about dropping out with all those pages sitting there waiting to be read ). I have been known to make a gallery comment such as "I can only see half of your gorgeous LO, but the half that I am seeing is terrific"

Hey OMI... are you going to the Adobe fandango in July? I was thinking about it....seems like it would be a fun, long weekend for me... and I would be the lone Rhode Island representative LOL
Anyone else going???? I may actually get out of the house without a young man in tow so it would be wonderful to meet up with the "real people".
