Screen Capturing programs

Hello all!

I'm wondering what's a good screen capture program?

I've heard of (and I believe have used at one time) ScreenHunter. Is it any good? Easy to use/manipulate/etc?

I would especially like it so that when I make myself notes on how to use things for my "Photoshop Binder" (hehehe), I can post pictures of even small things (like various icons/buttons/drop down menus, etc)...

I've seen people, in tutorials, show captures of the littlest part of their screen.

Please advise...and thank you in advance!

Thanks a bunch, Randy! I've downloaded it and now will have to figure out how to access the Help file!

Again, thanks!

xnview has a nice screen capture feature built in, and it's free.

If you have PSP, it also has a decent screen capture feature.

At work I've used GrabIt as well, which isn't free, but has a couple nice features (like automatically scrolling a window to take a "screenshot" of the whole thing as if it were taller).

And, there's always good old PrintScreen (capture entire screen into the clipboard) and Alt+PrintScreen (capture the currently selected window into the clipboard). Then just go to your photo program, (or Word or whatever), and press Ctrl+V to paste it in.

The trickiest things to capture are popup tooltips, video stills, and DirectX surfaces...for that you might need to use something like fraps (which is a kind of video recorder used by computer gamers to record their gaming sessions or make "machinima" movies).

Hi Lorne,

Thanks very much for responding. Wow, another guy! Between you, Kompressor, and me... we just may start breaking out the nachos and baseball games! Perish the thought!

Thanks for your advice... do you possibly mean "Snagit" instead of Grabit? I looked at Grabit and it seems like it's geared more for newsfeeds, etc? Maybe I didn't look hard enough?

Snagit looks pretty good and I may just end up going with that. It has a "menu capture" feature and that's pretty handy.

On a related note, would you happen to know of any good screen recording program (those that are used for tutorials, etc?) that includes audio ability with a microphone? I've tried a few free trials online but my computer keeps not liking them and I get an error saying my computer is dumping my memory... whatever that means! LOL!

Thanks again for your help!
Ted

Oops, you're totally right, I meant SnagIt. I haven't used it in a while -- I've been using the one built into xnview because I find it a bit easier to use.

I know we've used Camtasia for some of our tutorial videos. There's a newer capture program out of Australia called CaptureCAM that is really good, too. Neither of those are free, though.

I tend to use the Print Screen button that's right on the keyboard (copies to the clipboard), then Ctrl-V (paste) into my graphics program...

Hi Liz,

Thanks for responding.

I guess I was looking for something where I can specify the region, including pull-down menus, to capture...

I reckon I could do that in Photoshop, however.

I'm a guy. Lazy is my middle name. Actually, it's Daniel, but you get the idea.
