Coloring parts of templates?
I've been trying to figure out how to color parts of a template & can't seem to get it. What I mean is, the template has a flower design that goes up the left side of the LO & its in black. Ive seen Lo's where people have colored these all different colors & thats what I want to do. Im using PS CS2.
TIA

Hey There Tia,
Well I am pretty new here and to digital scrap booking, and I am using Digital Image Suite 2006 not PS. But, what I do is to first make a copy of the this part of the template so you don't accidentally make any permanent changes you don't want. Paste the copy into your LO. Next, select the element or part of the element with a selection tool like the magic wand, edge finder, or free hand tool. Maybe it's called lasso in PS? Then change the hue of the element or try to fill it with a color ir texture. I hope this helps somehow. If not, then I am sure SOMEONE here with more experience will help. )
Here is a link to a tutorial that migh help: http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com...ginghues.shtml

I don't use PSCS2, and I am not sure exactly what you mean. Have you tried using the Tutorials for that software? We have lots of experienced PSCS2 users here. Hopefully someone will come along soon!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I got it colored not the colors I wanted but hey its colored LOL. I took Gwen's suggestion of making a copy of the layer & then I did a hue & saturation adjustment on it & it put colors on all the flowers. The leaves are still black but ah well. Im sure once I stop looking I'll find a tutorial for how to actually color this. TIA means thanks in advance just in case you see it in use, sorry Im a gamer & we use this alot there.

Shellshok.
It sounds like it is actually a "doodle". This is a tutorial for coloring word art, that I used for the first time last night to color a doodle. I was doodle coloring challenged!! It took me a couple of tries, but it worked.
Good Luck.

one way to change the color of word art or doodles that are black (easy and works in every program I use)
duplicate the layer
click the Lock Transparent Pixels icon in the Layers Palette (in PSP it's a padlock, in PS/PSE it's a gray/white checkerboard icon)
use a colored brush to paint over the parts you want to recolor
it's fast, easy, and exact. Hue/Sat is hard to get white and black to change at all, and if you can get it to change it's hard to get to the right color. Some people can, I can't!
To change the color of more realistic objects, the hue/sat is the way to go. Recoloring parts of it is better with the color replace brush, or Replace Color command in PS/PSE (Hue/Sat Map in PSP)

And as with Photoshop there are always multiple ways - if you select the portion of the area you want to colour with your magic wand - you can then promote it to its own layer - using the keyboard shortcut cntrl-J - then you can fill that portion with whatever colour or pattern you desire - you can even paste a background over that layer - select the piece of pattern layer( using that magic wand again ) invert the selection - ( selection - invert) and on the paper layer delete ( just hit the delete key) - and you will be left with your patterned piece

I don't use the Wand much either, Lauren, lol! But PS is great because it has enough alternatives so however your brain works you'll find something that suits it.
here are some more ideas: You can Ctrl-click the layer thumbnail to select all the pixels and fill that in with a pattern, etc using Edit>Fill and choosing what you want, or even better Layer>New Fill and choose something there like a color or pattern that you can SCALE (nice feature there)
In PS I also like the Layer>Clipping Mask (Group with previous in PSE)
the lock transparent pixels is nice because it works in PSP too (universal techniques are great when giving chat instructions), and you can paint just portions (like green stems and pink flowers). PSP can paint with patterns too, so that's another reason I like it in that program.
