Trying to find guidelines for creating kits...

So I have been taking classes, etc. and really want to take the plunge in designing my own kits. I had a question about what is/is not considered acceptable when creating kits as far as brush, texture, patterns, etc. Other than the ones that came with the program, can any other brushes, textures, patterns, shapes, fonts be used in designing your own kits? I know we need commercial permission to use those if we plan on selling our kits but do you as digital designers for DSP create all of your own brushes, patterns, etc. 100% or are some from photographs you take, etc. I am curious on the intricacy of some of the designs I see and wanted to know the rules as far as all of that was concerned.
I hope my question is not silly. I know for personal use it did not matter but for your purposes as DSP designers I was curious as to how that worked.
Any info you could lend would be greatly appreciated.

I take photos of textures (sidewalks, trees, etc) NOT of fabrics, etc as they would be copyright protected.

I do use some graphics, with commercial license, such as Dover, but alter them drastically before I use them. Hey, anyone can grab a Dover graphic and plop it in a kit. I try to alter it in a new or creative way so it becomes a unique pattern or element.

I'm very aware of copyright issues. Like in my Read All About It kit. I first sat down and created an entire newspaper using fonts I have permission to use. Adding titles, pictures, etc. Then I used that background to cut out all of my elements. I've seen elements, elsewhere, using newspaper where they obviously scanned in or photographed a current newspaper and I can't even begin to think how many copyright laws that violates!!

Anyway, a great place to start to learn to design is to take classes here at DSP.

I simply can't say enough about what I've learned through them. There are ones for all the main programs and the instructors are simply wonderful!

Thanks for the question and your answer Bethy. I just finished taking DSU 261 and learned all about creating my own patterns and elements for " ideas" and photos of other objects. The instructions were really clear and It opened my eyes to being more creative. We also talk about this in our SNL group . check out monthly challenges.
