Arrow Online storage vrs Your own domain

As for the online backup services I gather they are just storage facilities and that you just upload your files and create folders same like you would do on your HD. As for the price I see that 'Carbonite' is $50 a year. May I make a suggestion, for that much and maybe a little more but definitely less than $100 one could get their own domain name (www, yourpage, com) and have it hosted for 1 year.

I pay <$60/year for hosting plus <$10/year to renew my domain name(www) total @ $70 and I get 500 GIG YES 500 GIG of storage. Now that is ALOT!! I don't even use over 100Gig and I got over 3,500 MP3's that I have available on my webpage. I would definitely think about going this way instead of plain storage.

I know it might be scary to have your own domain. For one thing you'd have to think up a name. Plus it is something new and you'd have no idea of how to go about it. But believe me that is the way to go. Find someone close by that can come over sit down and walk you through it. One afternoon is all it would take. Or learn how by reading online. Or people on here would be a big help too. Start a thread.

doesn't Yahoo offer free file storage now? If so, I'm clueless, but maybe someone on here will be able to link us to the right place

Can you do automated back-up's to your domain? If so, then it would be a viable alternative, if not then I think a service like Carbonite (what I use) or Mozy would be the better option.

Having the ability to back up (burn to DVD/CD's, EHD, on-line) is only of benefit if/when the data actually gets backed up. What I see happening is that folks have every intention of backing up, but get busy and forget. That's why I like Carbonite - I don't have to schedule anything, it goes to work as soon as I download new pictures or save a document. Unless I just added a big file - everything is backed up within minutes, and I didn't have to remember to anything.

What about security issues? Can't hackers get into websites and really mess things up? I think Carbonite and Mozy are secure sites. -c-

No. A domain would not back up automatically. You would need to upload manually. Gee really not hard. And why trust some auto service?? When you do it manually you know it's there. And you have the option of having a website and an FTP site. It's a place to exhibit your layouts and pictures and well just like everything you see on this thing called the internet. As for hackers I think that is far fetched. Don't you worry about it just protect your password just like you would on Carbonite or any other site. Oh I forgot the other really best thing is having your own email address. (yourname@yourdomain,com) send/receive mail with no size limits. No more yahoo or gmail addys. With your own domain your address will never change so long as you keep your domain active. Can't tell you how many I went through addy changes not to mention the trouble getting the new one to everyone that was in my old addressbook.

Your own domain, it's the last frontier.

Nope not free. Flickr and Yahoo! merged for photo storage but they limit you to something relatively small. I'm now keeping my photos and documents on ViewMyLIfe.com - it's free and unlimited. I don't think there is an auto backup option with it, but as everyone else said, doing it manually lets you ensure everything is there.

Yes - daily.co.uk is a host which also offers an automated backup service. Its called 'daily drive' and you get 50gb. It runs at the same time each day , checks if there are new files on your hard drive (in the folder you specify) and then uploads them. Its great. i set mine to run when im picking up my son from school!

Dont know if its just UK though..

Interesting, don't think there is a US company offering that sort of thing. Although 50GB is good it is not nearly enough space for me. I already have over 120 GB backed up and now that I got my first DSLR last week I expect to be adding to that number rapidly.

I just had a look around - and discovered http://www.mediafire.com/ - absolutely amazing. They offer free UNLIMITED file storage and sharing. Ive just signed up to test it out. There's a lot of blog posts about it too if you google, and seems like a lot of good reviews on it. Have a look - could be the answer!

That looks like a really good deal for folks that are disciplined enough to upload everything on a regular basis. I personally would not fall into that catagory - I'm horrible about remembering to back-up stuff up which is why I like Carbonite, it does it for me almost instantly.

Carla ... hackers and security issues are USUALLY exploits of *software* and *scripts* that people use to automate their web site. Like a photo gallery, a forum, a chat, a blog, or a content management system.

If you're just logging in and using it for storage - you don't have any scripts or software packages installed on your website.

thinking of trying carbonite but question for me is can you access your files from any pc anywhere anytime? I thought Picasa was that way (Google photo storage) but discoverred today it is only per PC, that files loaded to it are only accessible for that PC that you downloaded from, bummer.

Thanks for any info on Carbonite, I currently have an external hard drive and save my pics and layouts and kits three ways already, 2 pcs and on the Ext. Hard drive but when I go to to crops away from my home would love to have online access to my kits.
Thanks

we wanted to try carbonite too, but it was some silly amount like 50GB, and we have about 500GB that need backed up! Most scrappers have huge files, lots of photos and PSD files, and all the free or consumer-priced ones we looked into aren't suitable for that amount of data. Still head scratching on how to proceed
