What would you like in a photography class?

In the U? I know there's a ton of interest in something that will get us into the manual modes (off auto), and maybe even a portraiture class........ What other photography topics are burning in your brains???? Hint, hint, hint......!

Suzanne,

I don't know if it would be part of learning how to use the camera in manual mode, but I would love to know the best settings to use in challenging situations (low lights, indoors, action shots, bright sun...).

Thanks!

Yes. Me too. That is exactly what I need to learn how to do.

I think that focusing on life's everyday moments is of more value then sitting your kids in front of a background and boring them to tears. Sorry, just my opinon, but my favorite photos are the ones of my kids having fun, playing with friends or famliy or even by themselves. Actually, not just kids anyone having fun or doing something they love. Making these kinds of photos special, artistic and beautiful would be saving treasured memories. Wow, how's that for a different opinion.

I totally agree, Erica!

Which was why I asked about learning the best way to photograph under challenging situations - most of the time those best moments happen on the go and not in optimum conditions (at least in my house with a toddler who won't stay put for more than 2 seconds).

Thanks for asking for input, Suzanne!

okay, here's what I need in a class:

Someone to drive over here, take out my camera, turn it on, put it in my hands, say: "Get your lazy butt off the computer and go take some photos of your adorable kids! But wipe the tantrum snot off their noses first because they've been crying so long since you've ignored them all afternoon..."

Then tell me exactly what settings to use, and make sure I don't get back on the computer just to check ('cause you know I mean check my email, not the photos!) until the session is finished!

Can you do THAT?!
Alas, I think there is no hope...

Erica

Ahhh, but scrapping, and photography is more than just about children. And for some of us, our children are older than 5 or 6 years old. I'd love a really nice photo of my daughter taken almost anywhere other than her kitchen. I nice backdrop, and a chance for her to get her hair combed before her dad takes than next photo would be a relief.

For that matter, I'd like a nice photo of me that doesn't involve me wearing sweaters that are two sizes too big and sitting in a recliner reading a book.

I'd like some really nice photos of fall color, and winter snow, and spring and summer flowers.

I have candids. In fact tomorrow I get to have a look at what my husband says is over 900 candid photos of his trip to Australia. All candids of course. And who knows if there will be even one decent shot in the lot!

If I'm going to get some decent photos to work with, I am going to need to take them myself, and once I find out how to use those manual settings I keep going on about, I just might want to learn how to set up a studio too.

WHAT A GREAT DISCUSSION!!! You guys, thank you!! Seriously - I love it when people have slightly different perspectives and are honest about it! I learn SO MUCH!!!!!!! This is no exception!

Murph (sorry, Erica, that's what I call you in my head!), I've been honestly thinking much the same - that I have a ton of close crops of all my darling kids' faces on my black backdrop, but not much of them being.... THEM. Well, unless you call Molly with green marker all over her face being "Molly"... But I think we do get to do that in the basics class (which is why I called it "Taking Better SNAPSHOTS")....... Sometimes the MOMENT is more important than the angle, the flash, the lighting, the background..... And some of the scrapbook pages I love most are those with people doing things that are family legend - know what I mean?

On the other hand, I love that I don't have to schlep my fourteen children to Sears or the Picture People, fight tooth and nail to get all seventeen of them to look at the camera, and then pay a lot of money for shots that I can get (better) at home. I love the natural look - not the posed-say-cheese look, and I just get such a high when I get THAT GREAT moment captured. I love learning and exploring the art - in both the studio format and the more candid format. How did this turn into a novella of fenceupmybutt?

So, not to fence-sit, but can I agree with both sides of this issue? I would love to explore BOTH posed and un-posed formats! I think both have so much artistic and personal meaning.

Oh, and Emma, get your buns out of the chair and go turn on your camera (grab a wipe on your way - the kids are kids)...........
