Photo challenge #1

So there are a few of you wanting to get back into challenging yourself and the use of your camera.

Our first challenge will be to take a portrait using the shallowest depth of field you can depending on the lens you will be using.
Try using AV mode and set your aperture to anywhere between f1.2 and f5.6, it will all depend on your lens.

Get in close and focus on the eyes, or where I typically focus which is between the eyes, and take your shot

Post up to 2 images in the Photography Challenge Gallery by the end of Tuesday 16th August.

Looking forward to seeing your portraits

Here's my first attempt. Granted, it's more of a snapshot, but I did use the lowest aperture on my lens. I did notice that I can get an even lower f-stop if I don't zoom, so that will be my next attempt.

Portrait Challenge

Here are two from me, one of each of my daughters, both taken at ƒ/2.0 with my 35mm prime.

Stacie, these are great photos. Do you like your 35mm prime? I was considering getting a 50mm prime and wondered why you chose 35mm?

I actually have my 50mm on my camera about 80% of the time, I absolutely love it, but I find that I sometimes run out of room to back up in the house with it. I have been trying to get better at not chopping off people's hands or elbows and my 35mm is good for getting into some tight spaces indoors. I also have the 85mm which I love using outside since I have more room to work with.

I would never have thought of a physical distance issue. Since I've never had a prime lens, I don't quite know how they work. I think, perhaps, the best way to figure it out is to get one and actually try it ! Thanks for the explanation!

Cheryl try putting your zoom lens on manual and set it to whatever length you want and then don't move it from there and continue taking your photos you will soon see if a prime lens is what you want.

There doesn't seem to be the interest in photo challenges at the moment crlin60.

Thanks for that idea, Karen. I wouldn't have thought of trying to simulate a fixed focal length. I'll try it.
