Help with correcting scans?
I've posted my problem images here .
Someone emailed me these scans. Any chance of correcting the artifacts using PSP8, or should he reset something on his scanner?
I've tried some of the tools that say they get rid of noise, like moire, etc., but had no luck. Has anyone had any luck with fixing something like this, or would you know what to set the scanner to?
I've had a scanner to do this before, and I was scanning at 300 dpi. His are at 150, so it doesn't look like the resolution setting matters.

It looks like he is scanning old printed documents. I would make sure he is sending you the originals as scanned and not resized ones for a start.
Also try a different scanning resolution as it might help with the printing dots.

Yes, I'd say to begin with the scan -- instead of you having to correct the problem. Have them scan at a higher resolution -- but also find out what options the scanner allows (does it have settings to allow for newsprint or have descreening settings?) I've seen different settings on different scanners -- try to get as much as you can -- or even attempt a digital photo of the item you want. PSP has some great helps for getting rid of problems -- but it would likely help to begin with a better scan. Hopefully someone will be able to tell us how to correct if you cannot obtain a better scan.

Actually, he started with a digital photo of the one on the left, and it's pretty good, but I asked him to scan it for better resolution. It is a record cover. The one on the right is a black and white glossy photo. I was just trying to show a close up of the artifacts.
Ah well, I'm trying to find the record online, and I don't care that much about the b/w photo, really. I probably won't use it for anything.
Thanks for your help!

If you are using PSP8, look in the adjust menu. There is a feature to remove artifacts.
Hope this helps

Those images you posted have some serious problems. Normally you only see this when scanning from a magazine at low resolution. The one you said was orginally in digital format, there is no reason to scan it. Get the image from him and work with that. Photos should not be scanned in lower than 300 dpi. Perhaps one of the problems is that he used a low quality scanner. I have never seen scanned photos look like that.

Thanks, I wasn't clear on that, sorry. When I said he started with a digital photo of one, I meant he took a photo of the album cover to start with. I asked him to go back and scan the album cover, thinking it would be better, but it's not, not with the yellow artifacts.
He's done so much for me already, I don't want to put him to any more trouble. I hesitated to even ask for the scan, since he had already gone to some length to photograph his entire collection for me. It's a wonderful archive of one band's huge number of worldwide record releases, along with promotional photos and his own personal photos. Most of the pics were perfect; I had just never seen the photo on that one album and wanted a closer copy of it. But thanks for all your help. I *might* ask him to scan it at a higher resolution, sometime.
Thanks!
