Journaling: Thank you to the DSP Designers for giving me the privilege of telling the stories of my life with your beautiful designs. I have enjoyed creating every single page, and honestly feel that being part of this team has made me a better scrapper. I think more about how a page comes together, what can be done to make it better or more complete. I have also learned from the fabulously talented team mates, you ladies are an inspiration! I am sad to see my term come to an end, but I will remember the experience very fondly, and look forward to what's next at DSP for me! I added a date and place on one of the paper strips. And a trick with the large blended photo ... the original photo had the boys centered, and was not as pleasing with them in the middle of the page. I positioned the photo with the boys where you see them, and then selected the right side of the photo and stretched it to fit the width of the page. This wouldn't work for every photo, but it was a good trick in this case. Walker mad me think of my engagement ring, so I decided to scrap the store of The Proposal! Journaling: In September 1999 we rented a house in Pope Valley and spent the week with friends touring wineries in the beautiful Napa Valley. On the night of the 14th, we went to Cakebread Cellars for their annual American Harvest Workshop dinner, a dinner that celebrates local food, great chefs and great wine. Had nothing out of the ordinary happened that night, it still would have been one to remember as we met members of the Cakebread family and enjoyed an absolutely divine meal in the fermentation room (much more charming than it sounds). But here is how our evening went ... after sipping summer wines and enjoying appetizers on the patio, the group of 60 or so was invited into the fermentation room where the beautifully set tables were accented with candlelight. Our group of six (Scott, Chis, Eric, Lori, Mark and me) sat with a reporter from the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and a man who was the local mushroom purveyor. As each dish was served, one of the Cakebreads would make some comments about the wine, and introduce the chef who prepared the course, who would then add comments about the food. Somewhere between the first and second course, Karen Cakebread was talking about all the exciting things in the room that night, that Jack and Delores Cakebread were celebrating a wedding anniversary (49 years, maybe), another couple was celebrating their first wedding anniversary, "Oh and by the way", she said, "I think Mark Turner has something to say." I had been looking around the room, enjoying the evening, and when I heard the comment I can remember thinking that must be something about my 30th birthday, which happened to be the next day. But to my surprise, Mark was kneeling beside me, open ring box in his hand and asked me to marry him. I was shocked, overjoyed, and of course said yes! We went back to the same annual dinner in 2005, and it was still a wonderful evening. We had the pleasure of being joined by Jack Cakebread at our table that night. At one point, conversation turned to these dinners over the years, and I think someone asked Jack what memorable things had happened at them. His response was something like, "Oh one year, a beau proposed to his girl right there, and she said yes." I really don't think he knew it was us, so it was wonderful story! No wonder Cakebread wines have a special place in our cellar! Heidi has made something so beautiful, soft, elegant and versatile! Erica has created some awesome border overalys that make it easy to add some finishing touches to a page. About this page: I gave the photo a bit of a glow by duplicating the layer and using the gaussian blur filter on the top layer, and then reducing the opacity until I was happy with the effect. I also think there was something very tender about the way they held each others hands, so cropped a second photo to their hands and used the stamped journal block as a clipping mask. I used the Grungy Borders Overlay using a combination of overlay and color blend modes to give a bit of a stamped looked on the edge of the paper. The frame set could be used big or small, and gives a great layered effect. I played around with the large photo quite a bit, wanting to give it just a bit of texture. I duplicated the photo, set the bottom layer to screen, and the top layer to darken at 80%. I used a gradient mask from the top left of the photo to blend a bit with the background paper. Adding Erica's Pure Grunge Overlay gave just a little more framing and grunge to the page. I also played around in Wordle (a web based "word cloud" generator), used one of their generated clouds to start from, and built on it a bit. Journaling: We spent a week vacationing on the shores of Lake Michigan. It seemed every day you became a tad braver about playing near the water, and chasing waves. No commercial scrapping sites or acronyms. Designer and/or kit name only.): I really had to keep stopping myself from trying to add things to this page! Suzanne's kit has some adorable doodly and crafty elements, and I added some splashes of color in the blocks. Journaling: Today seemed like any old Monday. But it is different. Toady, Delaney moved from the three/four-year-old room at school to the pre-school room. No big deal really. She took it in stride. All her friends were moving with her, some she has known since she was three months old. She asked a couple questions over the weekend about why they changed rooms, but she wasn't scared and was excited to go to school. What struck me, the Mom, is that the next "room" change will be next year when she will go to kindergarten. Really? My daughter who not so long ago couldn't walk or talk, and could truly fit in my arms. She will go to kindergarten. At a real school. On a bus. With all new kids. Yikes! Like all the other things that have changed in Delaney's life so far, I know she will continue to grow and do well with the new things in the upcoming year. When the time comes, she will probably give me a hug and kiss, and get on the bus, without fear, ready to greet her next adventure. Until then, I am going to enjoy every day with my little pre-school girl! And when I saw Meryl's new cardboard overlays, I just knew I would love them. They are so easy to use, and give a great effect, either for journaling paper or a photo! Journaling: We have owned a Ford truck of one kind or another since 1996 when Mark went to work at Ford Credit. They have been great vehicles and served our family well. Unfortunately, our Expedition seems to have been plagued with odd (and expensive) problems over the years. On a recent road trip, with 700+ miles ahead of us, Clifford struggled to go over 55 MPH. With an estimated $4,000 bill to fix the problem, we decided it was time to make the move to a more reliable family vehicle. Off to the Honda dealer we went, and struck a deal for a 2009 Odyssey MINIVAN! We have already been on two road trips and it has truly been a great fit. Tons of room for all the stuff we seem to travel with, and all the electronic gadgets we could need or want. Delaney is in love with the entertainment system ... I think it is pretty cool that she can watch something, and I can still listen to music or talk on the phone. I have to keep reminding her that just because it is there, doesn't mean she gets to watch a movie every time we get in the car. Doors that open with a push of a button, are easy enough for a 41/2 year old to open and close, and then be able to climb in and out of the car are a nice change! There are moments when I miss our truck - it was a great looking car, and a solid piece of America. And it certainly seemed like way too nice a car to trade in for the relatively small amount of money we got for it, but it was time! Delaney has named our cars - Clifford, as in The Big Red Truck, and I’m not sure where the name Zip Zip came from, but it sure seems to fit! Welcome to the family Zip Zip. Beautiful papers, with great texture and details, and a great set of elements. I liked the way the green tones set off these pool photos, but the possibilities are endless - heritage, nature, black and white! I masked off the right edge of the main background paper to let a bit of the rough edge show through. My title was inspired by Kenny Chesney's "Summertime", it truly feels like summer has been a long time coming in Iowa! Lots of rain, and relatively cool spring, so we were happy to take a quick family trip to the pool one night last week when the weather warmed up a bit. I was the one in the pool with my Canon Rebel! Ruby's papers have super colors and design, even for non-Taurus creations! Journaling: big girl bed ... To the surprise of many people, you slept in your crib until after your fourth birthday. You have never tried to jump or climb out of your crib, and you have always been so happy in your crib. As a little baby at bed time you would stretch your arms out almost like you were hugging your crib. As you got older, you were content to wake up in the mornings and play with your animal friends. I loved listening to you talking to them and making up stories. As you have grown, it just seemed like you were getting a little big for your crib, so we started talking about a big girl bed. You were resistant at first, but then we went shopping for your new bed, and you started to warm up to the idea. We put the mattress on the floor, where you were happy to read stories, but still wanted to sleep in your crib. One night after reading books, you asked, "Daddy, will you sleep in my big girl bed with me tonight?" So you both snuggled in for the night, and you never slept in your crib again. You have done great sleeping in your new bed, other than the falling out the very first night (Dad and Mom ran up the stairs super fast to make sure you were OK). One of the best things about your new bed, is you wake-up and come downstairs quiet as a little mouse looking for Daddy. You were never out of your crib early enough to see Daddy, so it is a special treat for both of you to see each other in the morning. And I love the sweet, soft sound of your voice first thing in the morning. I know it is your big girl bed, but do you want to know what I really see? I see a little girl in a really big bed who is growing up so very fast. ... little girl big bed Delaney, April 2009 Credits: Taurus Page Kit by Ruby Rynne Maskee Large Quick Bits Set 2 by Marcee Duggar DSP Adorable by Suzanne C. I think the edits I have done show that you can make some simple changes to make a photo eye catching. Here is the original photo: And the changes I made: (1) Unsharp mask in photoshop (to sharpen the photo) (2) Recolored the photo to a soft black and white (I used an action from MCP, but you can do this with just Photoshop). (3) Added a bit of tint using hue/saturation adjustment layer by picking a color out of the background. (4) Tighter crop on the photo. One day as we made our way through the aisles at Target, we came across nail polish, and I let you pick two colors. You picked pink and purple because "they are my two favorite colors." I suggested we do pink the first time, and purple next time, but you wanted your toenails on one foot pink, and purple on the other foot. You were so patient and still as I trimmed your toenails and painted them all pretty. You are so proud of your toes, and make sure that everyone seems them! No commercial scrapping sites or acronyms. To make the mat, I used the text tool and Times New Roman font and typed a large bracket. I duplicated it and rotated it several times, and then filled in the center. Then I just clipped one of the papers to it. No commercial scrapping sites or acronyms. Designer and/or kit name only.): Thank you so much to DSP and the designers for hosting this contest, and providing great supplies to work with! This is my "altered" entry for the final round of the DET competition. Here are the alternations for this LO: * Bottom layer is small dot lime paper (bg_lime paper), rotated so the more prominent sun was in the top right corner. Next layer is the darker teal paper (bg_tealgrungy), set to overlay blending. * From paper with the bits of red and more heavy border (bg_floralborder), I extracted the swirls/leaves and sun on the edge and duplicated portions of it to use as a border. * For the butterflies, the bottom one is as is, although resized a bit smaller. For the progression of butterflies, they have been reduced and rotated. Once happy with the placement, I duplicated each butterfly. The top layer I turned to sepia, with gradually increasing (from bottom to top) opacity. I then merged each butterfly and also reduced the overall opacity. * For the "adorable" U Magnetize Me, I duplicated it and extended the left edge just a tad so it could weave through the frame. I also duplicated it, cloned out the words and added delaney to make my own. * The flowers in the bottom left corner have been duplicated, rotated and resized. * For the text going across the middle section of the page (AmerType Md BT and Hurricane fonts), "Here comes the Sun, Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces" it is normal blending, but 70% opacity. In both placements of "Sun, sun, sun, here it comes..." I duplicated the layer and changed the blend mode to overlay on all layers (two copies for the top line, three copies for the bottom line). * The large photo is set to linear light, and I used a series of rough brushes at various opacity settings to mask off portions of it. Initially I was distracted by dots and part of the swirls coming though onto her face, so I made a rectangle filled with the lime green color and put it under her face, and under the darker teal paper, using a large soft brush to mask off the edges. Journaling (CAC Shishoni Brush font) is incorporated along the bottom with a few more U Magnetize Me pieces ... silly peek-a-boo; yes, the sun is here; fabulous spring; and a simple date on the far left (April '06).
