KITS - Christmas Past-0266dsp

Christmas Joy

Sounds of the Season-1964dsp

Wintergreen-1853dsp

ALL BY KIM LIDDIARD

Christmas Red Collection by TINA CHAMBERS

JOURNALING:The year was 1915 and the Christmas season had been bleak. With the oldest boy, Lyman, overseas in the “Red Arrow” division of the United States Army the father of the house, Louis, had banned all German language from the household. While the family tried to plot the movements of the division on a big map in Daddy’s den, Johanna, Louis’ mother who was born and raised in Germany, listened to the radio in tears as she recognized names of towns she knew. She had grandsons fighting on both sides of this World War and since she spoke only German, she could no longer speak in her son’s house. Lyman’s division had been in France last Christmas, the year in which an unofficial Christmas Truce had stilled the guns on both sides of the war, German and Allied soldiers all singing their own carols. That would not happen again. We were advancing toward Germany and fighting was fierce.

Jane, Eunice and their mother, Laura, had knit washcloths and sweaters for months to send overseas. The girls were sick of Olive Drab but they missed their older brother SO much. Then a package arrived wrapped in burlap and tied with heavy twine. It was from their brother! How? Where? Inside were two pair of carved wooden shoes for the two little girls but no note...that was banned lest the troop movements be compromised. Louis set to work researching the shoes, hoping his son was in Holland and relatively safe. It proved to be that these were FRENCH peasant shoes, worn in the fields to protect farmers’ feet. Lyman was still in danger and would be for some time.

Lyman finally returned home safely after the war, and the shoes hold places of honor in the homes of the girls’ grandchildren.

There are two more layouts about Laura and Louis' love story in my gallery http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com...500&ppuser=891 . They were my grandparents.

Wow - amazing story! It must have been so difficult for Johanna - what a terrible thing to have grandsons on both sides and to be unable to communicate. I love everything about this - such an important story to keep for the future

This is such a truly wonderful story which you have scrapped beautifully! I cannot begin to imagine how it must feel to have grandsons fighting against each other!! Has there ever been a time when there has NOT been a war happening at some place in the world I wonder?? Let us hope and pray that we can achieve such a status one day!! This layout is special!

What a great story and a fabulous layout to capture it. That must've been such a difficult time for the family. How precious those shoes must be.

This is so special. It seems like the reader is right there feeling the pain they all felt with this separation. What a great memory to scrap for future generations to share this story. Having grandsons that age, I can't imagine what it would be like to have them fighting each other. Great layout!

This is an incredible story, and you have told it so well. I love the sepia photo, and the colored shoes filled with Christmas decorations. What a heartache for the grandmother to go through. Thanks for sharing this Christms story with us.

What a difficult thing for the grandmother to go through, how lucky the girls were to recieve those shoes. They would surely hold a special place in my home knowing the history of how they came to be with the family. So many stories like this go untold. I appreciate reading journaling like this and knowing the rest of the story so to say. War is not good to have to live through no matter your age or where you are during the war. Being on the home front waiting for news or living your daily life in the midst of the conflict is very difficult. You have done such a nice job in choosing your kits, pictures and doing your journaling. Keep doing your heritage LOs. You have a real talent to share with your family and those of us who are getting the chance to live a moment of your family's lives.
