Journalling:
At the time Jack and Lena were dating, Jack was living on the family farm with his mother. His father, Stanley had passed away in 1948 and Jack, being the youngest son, stayed home to help his mother farm the homestead. When he asked Lena to marry in 1951, he had assumed they would live with his mother. Lena thought different. Although she would grow to have great affection and respect for Agnes, she had the wisdom at her young age to know that sharing a home with her mother-in-law might put undue stress on a new marriage. The answer was to move a smaller house onto the farm so that the young couple would have their own space. They lived in this very small two room house until there were three boys and Lena was pregnant with their fourth. It was then that Agnes realized it was time to move into Camrose and make room for Jack and Lena’s growing family. Although the bigger house was very rustic by today’s standards, I’m sure Jack & Lena thought it was palatial after what they’d been living in! They would continue to live in the “big” house until 1966 when a new house was built with modern amenities like running water and electric appliances.
