Journaling - “The days of the blue uniformed lighthouse keepers, checking their oil supply and slowly climbing the tower to tend the lens, have passed forever, yet their lighthouse remains.” Construction of the Ponce Lighthouse was begun in 1884 and lit for the first time on November 1, 1887. It stood as a beacon to guide mariners safely to their destinations until 1970. Then it was abandoned when the US Coast Guard built a new lighthouse on the south side of the inlet. Two years later, “the community formed the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association and persuaded the tow of Ponce Inlet to acquire the deed to the Light Station from the Coast Guard. The Preservation Association began their mission to restore the facility and create a museum. In 1982, the Coast Guard installed a modern beacon and the Lighthouse was officially restored to its original use as an aid to navigation."
