Have you tried making a duplicate layer and desaturating the red on the lower level and the erasing the upper layer?
You could use a layer mask if you want.
I just did a very very quick fix

I now realize that PS is something I have to study much more... I will try to scan the photo one more time and try to do something in PS later on.
