Letter from Team Digital

Happy Birthday America!

Traditionally Americans celebrate their independence and freedom in July. The many different ways we celebrate are with parades, fireworks, picnics, barbeques, campouts, and other family gatherings. All of these provide excellent opportunities for photo ops! I can't tell you how important it is to have the mementos of these special times. Preserving memories is what scrapbooking is all about. The photos and the stories are what really makes our layouts special.

I just love looking through all of my grandmothers old photos, and she was really good about writing the names and years down by the photos, but the stories are missing. I would really love to know more about what is going on in those photos, but she isn't here to tell me anymore. Keep in mind the story behind the photo when you make your layouts. Use the photos to tell the story and journaling to fill in the blanks. It doesn't have to be flowery beautiful writing. I am certainly not a great writer myself. Just enough so that future generations aren't left wondering. I urge you all to put some thought into this as you celebrate on our nations birthday and throughout the month too!

Digital Scrapbook University

Wow! Summer has started off with quite a bang! I'm not sure what part of the country or world you are in but here in Texas it is HOT! HOT! HOT! If you find yourself in the same situation and spending most of your time indoors, what better way to spend it than taking classes at DSU!

We are excited to be offering 4 new classes at DSU!

Introduced in July:

DSU170 – Intro to HP Creative Scrapbook Assistant
Welcome to the wonderful world of digital scrapbooking. With HP's Creative Scrapbook Assistant, you can create scrapbook pages on your computer in very little time, and the results are sure to wow your friends and family. In this class you will learn how to use HP Creative Scrapbook Assistant (CSA) to create quick and easy scrapbook pages using ready-to-use artwork. Instructors: Kim Liddiard and Lauren Bavin $30

DSU 290 –Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements: Creating and Using Overlays
This 4 week course will explore the basics of using overlays - transparent works of art for your scrapbook pages!  Overlays are the latest look in digital scrapbooking; with such a versatile flair, they add pizzazz to your pages in no time flat.  This class will introduce you to using, overlays, and then spend three weeks learning to create your own awesome pieces of art.  Don't miss the fun of overlays! Instructor Suzanne Walker. $30

Introduced in August:

DSU250- Home Lighting
Learn to work with lighting in your Home Studio!  Depend no more on the whim of the available sunlight for awesome studio portraits at home!  This course will focus on purchasing good, inexpensive lighting sources for your home studio setup, and learning the basics of lighting setup and function for home studio portraiture.  Students will be responsible for the purchase of halogen work lights (one set under $50, two sets of lights for less than $100, depending on your location and shopping resources/resourcefulness), and cloth light diffusers (approximately $20).  Halogen work lights can pose a safety hazard due to heat; please use caution when working with this type of home-made studio lighting. Instructor Suzanne Walker. $30

Introduced in September:

DSU252- Portraiture Posing
Learn how to tilt Aunt Tilly's head just so, and how to get Uncle Mo's best side, all the while keeping Silly Sally entertained (wow, would that be cool!)!  This class will explore the very basics of posing individuals and groups for portraits.  Students will make use of various settings to learn principles of portraiture posing, and will gain confidence in working with individuals and groups.  Students should have a digital camera or 35 mm camera and scanner, and a means to post images to the internet class site.  Students should also have access to at least one subject to use to practice posing techniques.  Experience with DSU151 (basic snapshots), DSU 350 (Building a Home Studio) would be helpful but not required. Instructor Suzanne Walker. $30.

We are still offering our other great classes at DSU! For a complete schedule and description of our classes, please visit: http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/university/classes.shtml

We would love to hear your suggestions on future classes! Send your suggestions and comments to me at dsu@digitalscrapbookplace.com.

We’re also looking for qualified DSU instructors! If you would be interested in teaching classes at DSU, please contact me for more information.

Digital Elite Team

Meet Digital Elite Team Member- Rosemary Norwood

I'm the digital scrapbooking baby of the team. I started the first day I joined DSP – March 12th!
I can't believe how much I've learned about design, composition and Photoshop in that time! When I first started scrapping in 2000 I was pregnant with our first child, Vince.
I remember driving around the Bay Area, trying to find anything about how to scrap. I bought my first copy of Creating Keepsakes that day and I was hooked! The first scrapbook store I found became my regular haunt and when we moved away I know they missed my regular – sometimes daily! – visits.

As I got busier as a mum and the family breadwinner, I had less and less time (and space!) to scrapbook. I really missed the creative outlet, but I didn't have 4 – 5 hours to spend on every layout. I have one problem – I hate to cut photos! So I would agonize for hours over whether to crop, where to cut or what shape to cut photos in. Finding simple scrapbooking liberated me a bit, but I still hated to cut those photos.

I wonder why it took me so long to discover digiscrapping. I've been a web designer making my own graphics for years – it seems an obvious step to digital scrapping, yet I never made it. I didn't really become inspired until I saw the quality of digital scrapbook kits and the quality of layouts that were possible. Then I made the connection and I haven't looked back since. I sometimes miss the feel of the paper, using the stickers but then I remember how much the kids like those things, too! So I play layouts with them and enjoy it without getting all hung up on making mistakes. Instead I make mistakes in Photoshop where undo can save me!

Being on the Digital Elite Team has given me a chance to stretch myself and learn new skills. I often find myself out of my comfort zone as I experiment with a kit that I wouldn't have bought otherwise.
There's also lots of support for trying something new, looking for something just a little more creative or attempting a scraplift. But the great thing about DSP is that that same support and encouragement is available outside of the DET. I am always uplifted to read supportive comments, honest suggestions and the many cheers that come from DSP members – especially when they are directed at someone other than myself! In the last few months I find that my composition has improved dramatically and that I am able to journal in a way that satisfies my need to capture the moment or memory.
Finding digital scrapbooking has allowed me to fulfill my desire for beautiful layouts without the agony. I couldn't be creatively happier at this time in my life.

You can see Rosemary's latest layouts in the Digital Elite Gallery, and meet the rest of the Inaugural Digital Elite Team here.
