Letter from Team Digital

Spring is arriving here in the US, which means lots of things new or refreshed. That’s certainly true for me, with a brand new slot on the best Design Team going! I won’t lie, I’m nervous about living up to the high standards at DSP, but I have a lot of resources to draw energy from, including all the staff and members here who make it so much fun.

So what am I going to contribute? What advice can I possibly give to people who have been scrapping for years before I even noticed this wonderful art? I searched in my heart and found that there is one thing I can encourage every scrapper to do; something I have enjoyed since I was a teenager or even before: Learn and pass on the history of family heirlooms. Don't put it off, that is. Ask or tell your family members about things that have been passed down for generations, or things that will be passed on. Keep a notebook if you won’t scrap the story soon, or a word file with family history jots.
I recall a lot of times asking my mother about her jewelry; where she got this or that piece, or various family glassware. One of my great-grandmothers was an antique dealer and I have a few pieces of furniture that were once hers. I know where things came from because my mother or my grandmother told me about them. A lot of things I have written down, or my mother would email me some notes occasionally as she thought of an interesting tale. My grandmother started a tradition of putting a note with the family items as she gave them to us for a birthday or Christmas. Often she would let us pick something from her curio shelves. We knew what we wanted to pick based on the stories we had always heard, but she also wrote it down in the gift note. I treasure her notes as much as the gifts. I have a great number of heritage photos, so it is invaluable to me to be able to put the stories and the photos together in this hobby that we all love. I wish I had made more notes of my own, because the memories of the conversations are faded and blurry, and now the people to ask are gone.

Of course it’s true that not all families have a lot of heirlooms. One DSP member scrapped a page about how her parents lost everything they owned when a barge sank. It’s still a family story and it made a great scrapbook layout.

So if you have a treasured heirloom, or even a story to tell about a lost one, make a mental note to scrap a heritage layout, or put a note with the item for later. If you know of a family item that has a story you haven’t been told, ask. It’s good family time together, learning and sharing information. Let it bring you closer to those you love, as my time with my mom and grandmother did for me.

One of my new kits in the store is called “Family Charms”. It’s not necessarily a heritage kit, but it can be used as one. In this newsletter I’m including a free set of charms that coordinate with that set, but they can be used to hang from any fiber as well.

Thanks to Team Digital for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful site!

Contests & Challenges

NKOTB4 - New Kids On The Block Challenge
Kristen Skold and Emma Powell are hosting New Kids on the Block 4! What's NKOTB? It's a contest for folks new to DSP and digital scrapping. Each week for three weeks we post a challenge. You create a layout, post it in the NKOTB gallery, and Team Digital, your fellow contestants, and other DSP members offer comments and suggestions. You can re-work your layout as many times as you like until the end of the week. Then the layouts are judged by our designers, moderators, and advanced scrappers. There are prizes each week, as well as prizes for various other challenges along the way.

We'll be taking sign-ups beginning Tuesday April 11th and posting more details in the forums, but wanted to give everyone a head's-up that we'll be starting Tuesday April 18th and running three weekly challenges.

Guidelines for Entrants
1. NEVER won a prize or challenge (random drawings and prizes for answering questions in chat don't count.)
