Letter From Team Digital - Christine Gundersen

Team LetterHey everyone! Are you all settled in for the new year?! I know this whole month has just whipped right by like a whirlwind, for me. LOL What an amazing hobby we have! Not only does it bring us closer to our families and friends, but especially here at DSP, we get to know so many people that we would never have met otherwise. Lucky us! During January, we did just that. Sands (sands_healy) decided last year to come for a visit, since her family would be going to the Caribbean for the holidays. (Bet you didn't know that Utah was between the Middle East and the Caribbean. LOL) The next thing you know we are having an official DSP crop, right in downtown Salt Lake! Yay! Margie came out and we had so much fun. Our ladies came by planes, trains and automobiles and the amazing thing was when you meet them for the first time it doesn't really feel like you are "meeting them." KWIM? It is more like a reunion. We went to dinner, did a photo walk, had a great crop, plus explored the area around Salt Lake City. When Margie arrived, the shuttle bus driver asked her if she was one of those crazy digital scrapbooking ladies, with chocolate. LOL Apparently her reputation preceded her! He just left out the ploppers. :D Frannie (RV'nFrannie) even went out recruiting! There was a baby shower going on in the room next door to our crop, so she pops in and tells them how they really must learn to digi scrap w/ the new one on the way and to come on over! .....................and guess who came to our crop?!!! Dear Myrtle!! For anyone who doesn't know, she does a weekly podcast and focuses on geneology and family history. (You should have seen Scamp, jumping up and down! One would have thought that Christmas had come early! :D)

So this month as you focus on your relationships and all that they mean in your life, don't forget your DSP friends and if you ever have an opportunity to attend a crop, definitely GO FOR IT! You will be glad you did!

Make it a great day!!

Featured DesignerAh… February.  The month of St. Valentine’s Day, on which significant others are celebrated and appreciated. But when you think about it, it’s ALL the relationships in our life that shape who we are, not just one with a special person.  Not only that, it’s all the relationships of others we’ve seen over the years; they have all been examples, guiding us in how we want to be, to the special people in our life. We have all had a number of role models in this way – parents, grandparents, friends, and our children – they all teach us something, and we in return give the same back.  Even our ancestors have a role in shaping our relationships, when we choose to study them through scrapping and genealogy.  We learn about the dynamics between men and women and families in times and places other than our own, as well as the different demands society and law placed upon them as compared to ourselves.   Culture affects our relationships, perhaps more than any other factor.  I’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating – I appreciate so much how DSP is a global community, with active members all over the world.  We learn and grown through exposure to different places, and are open minded about each others’ cultures. We develop terrific and lasting friendships with one another, whether we be 5 or 5,000 miles apart.  It’s not just techniques or experience we share; it’s sincere caring in a supportive community.  And here we find more relationships to treasure, and more role models.

In honor of this, February Scrapolution at DSP focuses on relationships.  If you didn’t see the Scrapolution announcement in January, check out the forum for our exciting new challenges here!  Already have Scrapolution fever?  Then get right to the calendar of challenges for February here!

Your goal, should you choose to accept it, will be to think about the various relationships you have come across or been a part of all through your life, and appreciate the love or learning you’ve gained from each one as you scrap them.  A bonus to your layout is always heartfelt journaling.  This is your legacy to those you will eventually leave behind.  Tell them about your parents’ relationship, what your grandparents meant to you, say why a favorite cousin was your favorite, or write a letter to your child.  Oh alright, you can scrap your spouse or significant other, too!  Valentine’s Day is this month, after all, you’re allowed!  But I know you’ll stop for a moment in your musings about family relationships to appreciate dear friends as well, and smile when you think of (or scrap) those right here at DSP.  Together you have made this community strong and wonderful, and I’m as proud as the rest of the DSP team to count you all among my extended family and friends.

Member Spotlight: Sandygb

SpotlightThe DSP Member Spotlight for February is the amazing and talented Sandy – better known as sandygb.

This former DET member is a real night owl, who can frequently be found “lurking in the hallways of DSP in the wee hours of the morning,” when Sandy says she gets most of her scrapping done!

“My inspiration comes from the kits themselves. I tend to scrap with one single kit at a time, and each kit inspires me to "paint" a different picture.”  How does she achieve a gallery full of simply gorgeous layouts?  Sandy says “I tend to throw everything on my page and see what sticks.”  We are sure that you will agree that the result is spectacular, with layouts you are sure to fall in love with!

Congratulations Sandy. Thank you for being our member spotlight. Be inspired by Sandy’s Gallery and read more about her HERE and the Scraplift the Spotlight challenge for February.

Inspiration for New and Advanced Digital Scrappers!

Digi-Scrapper Inspiration by Mandy

Little Boxes of Love

mandy1Valentines day, love it or hate it, this day is coming your way. I recently saw an article where people were interviewed on their favorite possession, and one person wrote that their favorite possession was a homemade Valentine Card that they have carried with them for years… So there is no time like the present to make that future “favorite possession” for a loved one in your life.

If you are not a red and white, hearts and roses, kind of person; remember that the Modern Romantic décor style has lots of pastels with cool blues and grays teamed with crisp whites, and softened with feathers, lace, ribbon, pearls and white flowers. For effect, introduce a few splashes of deeper colour and use a simple template or white space layout structure.

Aside from a card, give a homemade Valentine gift. Layout ideas can go from the traditional reasons why you love someone, using poetry or lyrics, or even sharing a piece of your heart – revealing a little piece of yourself to them.

Mandy2This year I have gone all out on boxes for Valentines day… I drew up a simple box template, with a heart fastening top that can be customized with DSP kits and printed out on cardboard for my children’s teachers and grandparents. These can be filled with chocolate, candy, or trinkets. A small message can be included as a little note or message can be written inside the box. Another idea would be to use the Cube Calendar Template for the first half of the year to make your box – leaving one side open for treats and a Valentine Message saying that this box is filled with love…

February Article: Spread the Love!

The month of February is all about relationships here at DSP and I want to help you include your loved ones in your hobby.  Of course there are many styles of layouts you can do, celebrating your friends and family; but what about giving them a personal reminder of your love?  To get you started, check out these projects I've created and shared with my family.

meg1Rear View Mirror Hanging Thingie (yes, that's the technical term):

My husband lives apart from us during the week, as he works a couple of hours away.  I stuck this into his car early one morning before he headed out.  Just a simple note to show him I'm thinking about him on the drive and throughout the week.

Using Elizabeth Weaver's Warm & Wonderful page kit and Tina Chamber's Long Distance Love Word Art, it's a simple layout that I printed and stitched to a coordinating piece of scrapbook paper.  I inked the edges to hide the bits that didn't line up perfectly, lightly stuffed it, and added the ribbon & button.  All together, it took less than an hour to put together and now it lives in my husband's truck, reminding him of his family back home.

Shrinky Dink Love Notes:

If you're over the age of 30, you probably remember the magical Shrinky Dinks cartoon characters.  (I say "over 30" because I spent a wrinkle-causing half hour in the office supply store with a lovely 20-something who was trying to help me find a package of Shrinky Dinks ink jet printer paper, and repeatedly asked me, "but what ARE they?")  If you want to relive the non-sensical fun of Shrinky Dinks with this project, they can be found in most scrapbook stores or online at www.shrinkydinks.com.

meg2
I used Nicole Young's Love Potion Title Set and flowers from Elizabeth Weaver's Raspberry Currant Add On Pack and Cool Summer Porch page kit.  The product suggests using light colored photos, but by lightening my photo almost to the point of washing it out, I was able to use a photo with darker colors fairly successfully.

I created the little love note for my daughter and plan to slip it into her lunch box sometime this month.  She loves finding surprise notes and I know she'll love this little trinket with our picture.  The entire image started out at approximately 7" wide by 6" high, and shrunk down to 3" x 2".

Since I had extra room on the paper, I printed out an extra title to use as a keychain.  The trick to this project is to punch the hole before you shrink everything in the oven.  I love the end result and have already attached it to my mother's keychain.  The image was 5.5" wide by 2" high before shrinking.  Now it's about half that size, almost exactly the size of the keys!

In one afternoon, I created three fun hybrid projects that I am sharing with three members of my family.  What a great way to celebrate the special relationships in my life!  Have fun with your own creations, your family and friends will love them!
