Letter from Team Digital - Sharon Topliss
What is a photowalk? It is nothing complicated – simply the act of going for a walk with your camera and taking photos of the things you see that interest you. It is often done in a group, although you can just as easily do a photowalk by yourself. Photowalking has become very popular in photography circles and has also become a regular feature at DSP organised crops. Getting together with friends, comparing shots, learning new techniques and generally having fun are what it is all about. A fancy camera is NOT required.
I recently attended the Auckland photowalk held the day after the Auckland crop. We spent a relaxed morning shooting flowers, trees and each other. You can see some of our shots on the DSP Flickr group. Spending a little extra time with my DSP friends was a real bonus.
Photowalking can also be good excuse to play tourist in your own town. We take many photos when we go on holiday but do we ever really explore our local environment? Photowalking can be a great excuse to do just that. You may find local camera enthusiasts to join up with (Flickr can be a good way to find like minded people) or just go it alone. If you think that photowalking might be something that interests you, why not join in Scott Kelby's world wide photo walk on 18 July . Several DSP people did this last year (Meryl even led a walk in South Africa!) and it would be great if even more could join in this year. Lauren and I have already signed up in Auckland. Hope you can join us (where ever you live).

Featured Designer - Lauren Bavin
While DSP is foremost a site for digital scrap booking and all that encompasses; galleries, education and classes, a great store and awesome freebies, to me the thing that sets us apart from the rest of the many digital scrap booking web sites on the internet is our members, and the incredible community that has developed here.
I have recently returned from the first Australian laptop crop at Surfers Paradise, which was followed by the 3rd annual Auckland, NZ crop .
These crops were extra special because Margie managed to fly all the way down from Ohio to attend them, but every laptop crop is extra special to me, because being able to witness women who are such close friends meeting for the first time is an incredible experience and one I’m always most honoured to be a part of.
Threads such as the Grannies thread in which strangers have often become closer than their physical neighbours, who share laughs, and tears, share in births and in deaths, in happy times and grieving times have made DSP more than just a scrapbooking site - its a site of support and sharing from members who give way more of themselves than just a layout.
The opportunity to meet fellow members and such good friends is so rewarding and the camaraderie at a laptop crop and the accompanying events will be surely the most fun you have had in a long time.
I’ve been lucky enough to attend 12 DSP crops now and each has been as special as the last but perhaps one of the most exciting and certainly the largest was the crop at at Adobe Headquarters in San Jose California in 2008 , and I’m very happy to announce that DSP will be holding our second crop at Adobe on August 8th 2009 !!!!!!!!.
Details of this crop will be posted here soon.
If you are in a position to attend this crop I would urge you to pull all strings to do so, you surely won’t be disappointed!!
I’ve already booked my ticket – just try and hold me back!!!!!!
I hope to see you there!!!!!!!!!

Member Spotlight: Ineke
DSP Member Spotlight for June is Ineke.
Striking use of light and graphic effects make this months Spotlight’s layouts shine in the DSP galleries.
Ineke attributes her distinctive style to the fact that she “never paper scrapped” and says she is “not a conventional scrapper” but “loves anything that is out of the ordinary, and to experiment with different filters and settings.”
She draws inspiration from her surroundings: “whether it be a beautiful landscape, an old ramshackle building or the bright vibrant colours of a flower in bloom. My family is special to me and scrapping as many happy memories as I can is of great importance.”
Dedicated to her family, and especially her youngest son Ryan (who is affected by Muscular Dystrophy and confined to a wheelchair), Ineke says she really enjoys the times she can spend behind the computer indulging herself in her favourite obsession - scrapping!
Congratulations Ineke. Thank you for being our member spotlight. Be inspired by Ineke’s Gallery and read more about her HERE then share the inspiration and take part in the Scraplift the Spotlight challenge for June.

My Memories Suite:
My Memories Suite is a premium digital scrapbook application that allows users to make beautiful scrapbooks that can be enhanced by music, narration, video, and the Internet. Create digital albums in minutes using one of many designer templates, or design your own pages using page kits (click here for a tutorial). Share your albums as beautiful hardbound books, print individual pages, watch them on a DVD, or view them on the computer as an interactive CD. You can even share them on an iPod or turn your pages into printed greeting cards that can be mailed directly to family and friends. The robust features of the software provide the graphic tools to make beautiful digital photobooks, while at the same time keeping all your memories—your pictures, videos, and music—preserved in one place.

Inspiration for New and Advanced Digital Scrappers!
Digi-Scrapper Inspiration by Mandy
The Nuts And Bolts Of Steampunk.
Digital scrapbooking opens a whole world of creativity for fantasy layouts, with the ability to extract people and things from an original photograph and move them into another reality. Aside from ethereal fantasy layouts, there is another bold artistic style that falls within the fantasy genre – it is called Steampunk.
Steam-what? I hear some of you ask. Someone once described it saying: “Think Jules Verne, HG Wells, Mary Shelly and the mad Victorian scientist”. Think of an era of wonder, as the possibilities of steam and mechanics were being explored - capturing the imagination of the Victorian inventors and populace. An era of craftsman, hand crafted products, and opulent design and embellishment. (Think of the movies: “The League of Extraordinary Gentleman” and “Brazil”).
However, Steampunk is not your great-granny’s Victoriana! What it boils down to is the marriage of fantasy and technology; a celebration of an era of luxurious, over the top, fantastic, marvelous metal and mechanical contraptions. (Hollywood’ s Steampunk inspired “Wild Wild West”, and “Edward Scissorhands” spring to mind.)
What it means for digital scrapbooking is a closer look at all those gorgeous metal embellishments from your favorite kits. Look for hinges, watch parts, watch faces, metal keys, hearts, locks, brads, and chains. Look for different shades and textures in brass, copper, rust, iron, gold, silver and pearl. Add some wood, leather, and glass and team them up with your favorite antiqued and vintage look papers as these will work well for a Steampunk layout.
Brighten “dark” layouts with jewels and jewel tones, add touches of crystals, ornate elements and rich velvet-look papers.
Having said that vintage, antique and metal tones form the basis of a Steampunk style, I did break away from this in my example layout – Steampunk Dream. I had planned on a darker, more sepia toned layout, but my subject’s youth and personality lent itself to a brighter layout, but, never-the-less, it is in its own right a Steampunk-styled layout.
Steampunk is a celebration of the past, teamed with the future, and a healthy dose of fantasy that should appeal to digital scrapbookers looking to try something a little different in a layout.

Scrapping the Sad Moments
“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues.” - Washington Irving
The scrapbook albums we create for our families are our visual diaries, the transcripts our descendants will refer to as they learn the family stories. Looking through my albums, I would say I've got a pretty incredible, happy, no-cares-in-the-world life! The problem being, I don't know too many people who go through life without any difficult moments, and I know my journey isn't always easy. So how to deal with reality? The reality is that life isn't always happy, but those harder moments shape us as much (if not more than) the easy ones. I think it is incredibly valuable to include all the memories that are important to your family and your family's history.
I find my scrapbook albums are thin during times of stress and sadness, but the layouts that I do create are more meaningful, and are often my favorites from a creative viewpoint. Art journaling is a time honored form of therapy; using our creative skills to visually document our more painful memories is a very effective way to process and deal with them. In addition, DSP as a community is such an incredible source of support and kindness. If you choose to post your more somber layouts, you may find comfort in the compassionate comments your receive.
Please take some time to visit the layouts below and leave a kind word. The members that created them will appreciate it and you may find inspiration in how these artists chose to deal with their difficult memories.
