Letter from Team Digital - Teresa Loman
The power of a Shiny Tiara
To say things have been a little nutty for me lately would be a huge understatement! In the span of six weeks, I’ve been to China, been to urgent care (for myself), and been at my mother’s bed side through a heart valve replacement and the installation of a pacemaker. Then as my luck would have it…as you read this newsletter, I will be serving my community with jury duty.
As I write this, I find myself in the midst of a cluttered house, a scattered mind and a list a mile long. The ceiling fans are circulating the accumulated dog fur around the room and the dog is curled up against my legs. (Doesn’t she know it’s like an oven in here already?)
So I have this list, a rather long list in fact. Several things can get pushed off to a later date. For example, having clean clothes to wear just doesn’t concern me as I still have plenty of clean pajamas to wear. And it’s not like I’ve run out of kitchen counter space to stack unopened mail. I do however feel the need to create new digital scrapbook products for all of you but it seems as if I am having a bit of a hard time finding that motivating design spirit with in me.
I guess you could say that I’m stuck in a rut. I know we all get there from time to time. Our normal, seemingly endless, supply of creativity dries up like a margarita glass on a hot beach ZAP! We’re left with nothing. What do you do??? Well, for me…the tunes (music) go on and the tiara comes out. That’s right, a Tiara. For most of you, my tiara is no big surprise. My husband bought it for me long ago. I wear it when I pay bills sometimes because it helps me to feel a little more in control of the money that is being drained from our account at rocket speed. I wear it when the men in this house start to forget that this is NOT a fraternity house and that a woman lives here too. And I wear it when my creativity has hit a brick wall as if a bit of BLING is going to channel creative energy.
So the Tiara has been placed upon my head in hopes of a quick return to my happyland of creativity. I know with my fun tunes and my glamorous bling, I will be busting out new digital scrapbook products in no time. I never under-estimate the Power of a Shiny Tiara.
Hmmm…I wonder how successful I’d be at the laundry with this thing on???
Pfft…who needs clean clothes? I have plenty of clean PJ’s!
Oh yeah…jury duty. I’d look awfully silly wearing PJ’s with my tiara.
(I’d like to thank Lisa Wingate, award winning author and DSP member, for the margarita simile. No one can finish off a sentence quite like Lisa can! Thanks, Girlfriend!!!)

Site Upgrade
We are continuing to have a few glitches on the site from the last upgrade of the software that manages our galleries. The good news is that we are getting another upgrade to (hopefully) fix most of the issues. The bad news (haha) is that we are having another upgrade to fix all the issues. This is a much smaller upgrade, though and should make everything better than ever! After the upgrade, please be patient for a few days while Margie makes all the tweaks on the site that puts all the edit buttons and displays back the way we want them.
For those of you who think we’ve had it bad, though, you should have seen the posts on the sites that don’t have the blessings of DSP community to get them through this. DSP was not the only site that was at the mercy of this upgrade and without the amazing people out there, we wouldn’t have been able to get through it the way we have. As a company, we extend our most sincere appreciation for your patience and sense of humour through the whole thing.
In the meantime, if you are still having issues here are some suggestions to get you through it (Repeats from last month, but they amused me so much, I’m repeating them again!):
- Having issues with your gallery? Scrap a layout! Take advantage of the little holiday you are having here...
- Can’t find your gallery or can’t find a layout in your gallery? Start a Scavenger Hunt challenge to find what you are looking for!
- Does your gallery appear blank to you but everyone else can see it? It’s magic - take the show on the road
- Do you want to make comments on your friend’s latest layout, but the sort in the gallery is random? Make random comments on older layouts like “Wow, I remember when you looked this young,” and “Hmmm, scrapping styles have changed, haven’t they!”
- Are your albums all out in the open? Hey, accept it, all your layouts are tired of being hidden away, they just want to be seen!’
- Does your gallery sort appear, well, unsorted? This is not a bug, this is a new feature. It provides you with opportunities to view older layouts that might otherwise be forgotten. (We’ll eventually get it fixed)
Seriously, though, folks, we do appreciate your patience through this. If working 24 hours a day would get the site ‘back to normal’ we would be doing it, but we are waiting on the software developers to get some fixes in place.

Member Spotlight: Chris a.k.a Nekobus
Our amazing DSP Member Spotlight for June is Chris a.k.a Nekobus.
“The Neak shall inherit the Earth” it says under Nekobus’s Avatar, which should give you a hint that this is certainly a person with oodles of character!
When asked how she would describe herself, Chris said: “My DSP friends will laugh, but I'm pretty introverted. At least, to start with. I like joking around about as much as I like chocolate, which is saying something.”
For someone who says she tends to hang around the edges like an “overlay”, Chris has nevertheless managed to make many friends at DSP and her layouts have certainly made an impact in the DSP galleries.
When asked about her style, she said: “I don't think I have a particular style. I tend to drop a bunch of things in a page, and then move them around and see what happens. I very rarely start with a specific plan for a layout. Occasionally, but very rarely.”
Well Chris, we may not be able to promise that the Neak will inherit the Earth, be we can say congratulations on being our DSP Spotlight for June 2010!
Looking for some inspiration? Then a good place to start looking would be by visiting Chris’s Gallery. Find out more about this interesting lady on the Spotlight Page and then take part in the Scraplift the Spotlight Challenge. Congratulations, Chris, and thank you for sharing your talent with us as the current DSP Member Spotlight

Digi-Scrapper Inspiration by Mandy

Remember the fun to be had with paper journals when you were younger - those with the hand-drawn illustrations and magazine cut-outs? Ben Heine’s amazing Pencil vs Camera images make me think of those – only stepped up a gear.
Challenge yourself, try incorporating a pen ink or pencil sketch with a photograph and do a layout! (If the idea of putting pencil to paper is just not your thing, use your scrapbooking computer program to simulate a sketched or inked look from a photograph).
You could run with the idea of the drawing being the focal point (like Ben Heine), or reversing it so that the drawing is the background and photograph the focal point; or you could simply group the photo and drawing and clip them onto your page (with a staple, paper clip or tape) as if it was a page taken from a teenager’s journal. Set your imagination free, and pencil in this idea for a creative scrapbook layout!

Going Beyond the Layout: - Personalized Travel Mugs
by Meg and Beth
So much of the crafting world is aimed at women and children, it's sometimes difficult to find ways to include the men in our lives. But with Father's Day coming up, wouldn't it be nice to use our digital scrapbooking skills in creating a manly gift just for them? You bet! I'm sure there are ways to digitally create a necktie, but I'm thinking of something a bit more useful. Stainless Steel Travel Mugs are perfect for a commute coffee and are completely customizable! I've created layouts for mugs similar to these before, but these are BY FAR the easiest to put together and the seal is tight, keeping your designs safe.
Instead of creating a layout in a conical shape, to be cut and wrapped around the entire tumbler (as many customizable mugs require), the mugs you find in the DSP store use two mini-layouts, created at 6 x 4" and approximately 3.5 x 4". You can print both onto standard 4 x 6" photo paper and only need one straight crop for the smaller layout.
 |
You then unscrew the bottom of the tumbler and insert your two layouts up into the plastic covered cylinder.
There are easy-to-see ridges to help guide the photo layouts into the proper place within the cylinder. Once they are in place, simply screw the bottom of the tumbler back on, and you are done! The insulated 16 oz. travel mug fits into most vehicle cup holders, has a non-skid pad along the bottom, and comes individually boxed (for easy gift wrapping!).
 |
This Father's Day, give a gift any man would love (and use) that also shows off your favorite hobby! Order your mugs soon, so we can get them to you in time (Father's Day is June 20th this year), and don't forget to order an extra one for yourself!

Featured Designer - Christine Gundersen!
Hi everyone! I just recently did this layout of my oldest daughter with two of her very best friends. It made me grin to remember all of the fun they had during our photo shoot, plus it made me happy to know that she has two friends that she count on, play with, laugh with and love. As I was thinking how lucky she is, I thought, "hey! that is what we have at DSP!" One of the very best things about DSP is the feeling of coming home and knowing that someone will be around. I don't know about you, but I have "met" so many awesome friends here. I LOVE the way people that have never even met in real life, reach out to each other. We celebrate the good times and accomplishments, then turn around and cry with those who are going through a rough time, while sending prayers and cyber hugs along the way. So to all of you, my cyber friends, I am lucky to have you and here is a BIG hug from me to you!
