Letter from Team Digital - Meryl Bartho10_05_03_Proudly-South-African_600x600

During July here at DSP we have a fabulous event – Christmas in July, with all of the Christmas spirit – tradition (what this great even has become!), gifts, special Christmas sales fun, family and fellowship. Keep a look out in the Forums – a little bird tells me that it is likely that this year will be no different.

For us here in the Southern Hemisphere, it has an added benefit – giving us a chance to experience a “winter” Christmas as here we are approaching mid-winter whilst you, Northerners are enjoying the balmy days of summer. We celebrate Christmas in the hot sun but oddly northern hemisphere traditions survive - it is probably a rare home where of does not find something – a Christmas tree laden with snow and frosty decorations, Christmas cards featuring robin red breasts chirping cheerily in deep snow, Father Christmas in a big red, very warm suit and at least in our family we even stick to the food – roast turkey, gammon with all the trimmings, and finishing off with hot, flaming Christmas pudding!

This  year, in our home we are holding a Christmas in July – our daughter Raewyn and her dh, Brendan, are visiting from Ireland, and we don’t have the opportunity to celebrate with them, and, since they went on the Pilgrimage with us (it was arranged by our church, here in South Africa) we have invited all the pilgrims to join us for what I hope will be a very festive occasion – all the food and fun of Christmas in the cool of mid-winter.

Last year dh, Ray, and I had the privilege of visiting Bethlehem the site of the very first Christmas, the site where Christians the world over believe to be the birthplace of Jesus. Traditionally his birth took place in icy weather and deep snow, doubtless where the “snowy” Christmas tradition originated. I’d love to tell you that visiting Bethlehem cemented the picture perfect Christmas card image most of us hold but in reality Bethlehem is a very real, very busy town, full of very persistent traders and the worst traffic jams (and the funniest!) any of us had ever experienced! Just an aside – if any of you ever have the opportunity to visit the Holy Land do grab it with both hands – it was for us the experience of a lifetime! I have completed and printed a Pilgrimage Album, most of which I have uploaded to the gallery.

To illustrate the Team Newsletter I have been asked to choose my favourite layout - but, how does one choose a favourite? For me it is like picking a favourite child - how does one ever choose? Having looked and thought I have chosen one which is topical for the present time here in South Africa – Proudly South African. Right now we are getting to the end of a wonderful time of hosting the soccer World Cup (yes, the layout is rugby but you know what I mean!) and event which having gone of flawlessly has made all South Africans justifiably proud!

Well, all that remains is for me to wish each and every one of you a very happy Christmas in July!

WHOA - the WOH comes to Town!

So what exactly is the WOH?

Hmm, it’s being kept under wraps at present. I saw CathieMarie hiding it the other day and tried to get a glimpse. I thought I saw a granny on it, but I’m not sure. That may have been an illusion. It looked awfully special, but I couldn’t quite tell what it was...

What I did see (and don’t tell Cathie I told you!) is that she’s planning on unwrapping it in the forums on Sunday around 1:00pm DSP time and you WON’T want to miss it!!

Member Spotlight: Sharon a.k.a. Goshiki

    goshiki-square

This month the spotlight falls on the super-talented scrapbook artist we know as Goshiki or Sharon.

Finding her inspiration in nature, her cats, her family and “a good photograph”, Sharon believes the most important thing on her layout is in fact the photo.

“In general, if I like a photo well enough to scrap it, I want to be able to see the details. I’d have to say I lean towards a graphic style. I love to blend and mask different parts of my pics to give them more emphasis,” she said.

Sharon describes herself as very patient and quite observant, qualities that no doubt contribute to the gorgeous photographs that make her layouts so incredibly eye-catching in the DSP galleries.

Looking for some inspiration? Then a good place to start looking would be by visiting Sharon’s Gallery. Find out more about this interesting lady on the  Spotlight Page and then take part in the Scraplift the Spotlight Challenge. Congratulations Sharon, and thank you for sharing your talent with us as the July DSP Member Spotlight.

Digi-Scrapper Inspiration by Mandy

I have a confession to make, I am not really a flag person, or at least I wasn’t until living through the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Suddenly every street corner had flag sellers, cars were sporting at least one little flag or more, or mirror-sox; houses, gates, walls… suddenly the whole country was aflutter with bright color. That’s when the nagging started: “Mom, can we get a flag for our car, please…” At every traffic light I became the target as I clearly had no brightly colored pendant fluttering in the breeze. Telling children they had their own little flags at home, made less than no impression at all. I pointed out some cars had an over-zealous six or seven flags each and my argument was that those cars more than made up for mine… a tactic that failed miserably. Eventually I gave in and bought some mirror-sox. Little did I know that that was only the beginning of our household’s flag fest.

My house is now festooned like a building housing a United Nations summit… I even have a FIFA flag proclaiming Football is Life! Yet, I love it. There really is something special about a flag fluttering in the wind, the colors vividly glowing in the last rays of the evening light. Somehow, a flag seems to carry with it the hope, pride and passions of a nation and that is something truly inspirational.

So this July, my challenge to you is to fly your flag in a layout!

  Featured Designer - Kim Liddiard!

    Hey Fellow Scrappers!

kimbio600Welcome to July and the heat for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere. This month ushers in family vacations, outdoor picnics, fireworks and fun in the sun!

For our family, life is ever changing. We now have two children in college and the others are still growing...fast! Time seems to slip through our fingers even when we try not to let it.

At graduation, we had the opportunity to give a quick speech about our daughter. Because she is an artist, we thought it would be special to "paint" a picture of the last 18 years and relating different colors to events in our lives so far. I then gave her a paintbrush that belonged to my mother and told her the masterpiece had just begun, make the most of it, and add her own touches and designs.

Sometimes I have been so wrapped up in watching for the big memories that I have missed or laid aside the smaller memories which are equally as important. I would like to encourage you to watch for and document (even if you don't scrap them later) the smaller moments.

    Time passes quickly.

The graduate speech about memories centered around colors and the masterpieces of our lives. Colors are so expressive. We have favorites and not so favorite colors. Don't hesitate to splash on the bright expressive colors for happy days. Break out a different paint brush and try new things. Whatever you do, paint that masterpiece as a heart endeavor and enjoy it to the fullest.

    Happy July! Be Creative!!

Featured Challenge - Scraplift Challenges:

  • Scraplift the Designers
  • Scraplift the Spotlight
  • Scraplift the DET
  • Scraplift the Scrappies
  • In the scrapping world, though, “lifting” is a great source of inspiration and greatly encouraged. The best part is that scraplifting is not copying at all unless you neglect to give credit! We all want to get a lot done quickly and efficiently. We all get stumped for ideas and we need a little inspiration. One of the best ways to get those creative juices flowing is to browse through the galleries and gather inspiration from the best of the best! As a result, we have three scraplifts that run monthly (Designers, Spotlight and DET) and some contests (such as DET and Scrappies) have scraplifts that go with them, hand in hand.

So this month, have a little fun and gain a little inspiration from one of our scraplifting challenges, they are a great way to double up on your challenges.
