Letter from Team Digital - Lauren Bavin NZ Crop

I've recently returned from the highly successful DSP laptop crop at Adobe's Headquarters in San Francisco. Once again I was reminded that being a part of DSP is like being part of a huge family. Meeting fellow members is simply like catching up with life long friends. I doubt there is another site that can match the wonderful environment for making and keeping friends as well as DSP.

When you meet up with fellow members you feel as if you've known them your whole life, and part of the reason for this is that by sharing our layouts we are sharing our lives with each other. Over time we see children born and grow up, we share in simple daily life and in huge momentous events through our layouts. We see those events in both words and in pictures. Almost as good as being there!!

In addition of course the forums here are filled with threads where our members support each other in a more traditional ways. From the Grannies threads to the New Kids on the Block contest the support of other members is so evident and it is this that makes DSP a unique and one of a kind website.

Over the next few months I look forward to meeting up with more DSP members. Some I’ve met before, some I'm meeting for the very first time but in every case i know that it will be like seeing a long lost family member. The bonds are strong even if we've never met face to face.

I’m so grateful to be part of such a wonderful community. If you get the opportunity to join in a DSP crop or meet up with a fellow DSP member I urge you to make the effort. It will be an experience I guarantee you will want to repeat again and again, for although we met online, these friendships are real, there is nothing virtual about them.

New Kids on the Block

What is a New Kid? Who ARE the New Kids? Are YOU a New Kid?

New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) is a contest for those who are new to digital scrapbooking and want to learn more based on quality feedback and constructive critiques from experienced scrappers. It is also a chance to meet new friends, become part of the DSP community and belong to an alumni group when it's over. The contest begins November 1, but the final deadline to sign up is November 7.

There's plenty of fun for those of us who have "been around the block", too. Be sure to cruise the NKOTB Galleries and comment on the layouts. Constructive feedback is what its all about! Come and join in the fun of the NKOTB Adoption Agency. Its a fun way to support the New Kids and make them feel welcome in the DSP community.

Member Spotlight - Jeanet

    Jeanet

The November DSP Member Spotlight is someone whom everyone will know immediately - a DSP Hall of Fame-er and long running DET member, her fantastic white space layouts are a distinctive feature in her gallery. I am of course talking about none-other than Jeanet.

"My main inspiration is my hope to be better at telling my story then my ancestors. I started out scrapping when my father died and I realized how many stories were lost because they were never told in time. I don't want that to be the case if I have children. I wish I had known all the stories, even the small ones. Every story is worth telling, even if it's not much more than a photo of someone you love. Every story is worth remembering and that's my inspiration!” says Jeanet, who admits that she puts so much time and energy into each and every layout that they all deserve to be her favorite!

"I wish I would pick the kit to match a photo more often because that would mean I only bought what I needed, but sadly it is the other way around. If I like a kit, I'm sure I can always find a photo to use with it. So when I start a new layout, it's usually the kit that decides the photo. I create my layout using white squares as stand-ins for the photo I'll pick once the layout is done."

Jeanet describes herself as “a bit shy at first, but when I find something or someone I care about I'm quite passionate. I'm a perfectionist in everything I do to a point where it gets ridiculous – like zooming in 400% to get a detail fixed. In scrapping as well as life I don't mind doing things myself. I always have a new idea I'm working on and always wish there could be more hours in the day to get it all done. I asked my husband how he would describe me and he said 'Fantastic' – Marrying him was probably the smartest decision I've ever made but then again I'm notorious for making the wrong decisions so that might not say a whole lot.” Jeanet, we think the smartest move he made was choosing such a talented wife!

Read more about Jeanet on the DSP Member Spotlight Page.

Her Gallery, is a MUST see, and once you have visited and been totally inspired, choose one or more favorites (more I think) and then take part in the Scraplift the Spotlight Challenge.

Congratulations, Jeanet, and thank you for sharing your talent with us as the November DSP Member Spotlight

Digi-Scrapper Inspiration by Mandy

    A Question Of Space

How can a layout with a few small photos have huge gallery appeal? The answer is: White Space! White space can be defined as an area with an absence of text or graphics. More than just a lot of empty space that someone forgot to fill, white space is an important part of your layouts design. Macro white space is the large space between major elements, and micro the small white space between text in your journaling (the space is what makes the text easy to read or appear busy and cramped). Active white space leads the eye around the layout and creates a sense of structure where the passive component allows the eye to rest. For inspiration I would like you to look at the following layouts by Jeanet: A Monster, Just You and Fall Already.

A well designed white space layout oozes class, but it is important to get the page to look balanced not incomplete. It truly is a case of thinking ‘quality’ and not ‘quantity’ in terms of how the space and the elements on your layout are used.

If you are like me and love heaping elements onto your page, this month challenge yourself to try one of these “less is more” layouts, and if you don’t know where to start… try scraplifting!
