Letter from Team Digital – Tina Chambers

In 2004, Shrek was the #1 movie. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation was the most watched show on Television. Usher's Confession was the top selling album. And in April, what would soon become the largest Digital Scrapbooking site on the web, was born.

Little did we know how quickly it would grow.

Little did we realize the bonds that would take root.

Little did we foresee the way our little piece of the web would become such an important part of people's daily lives.

What was in store for DSP surpassed our hopes and dreams. And we are so glad it did.

If you been with us from the beginning, or if you are a new DSPeep... we are thrilled and honored to have you here with us to celebrate our 7th birthday.

37,323 threads, 896,538 posts, 173,712 members, over 750,000 products downloaded, and millions of memories.

    Thank you.

New Kids on the Block

What is a New Kid? Who ARE the New Kids? Are YOU a New Kid?

New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) is a contest for those who are new to digital scrapbooking and want to learn more based on quality feedback and constructive critiques from experienced scrappers. It is also a chance to meet new friends, become part of the DSP community and belong to an alumni group when it's over. The contest begins May 1, but the final deadline to sign up is May 7.

There's plenty of fun for those of us who have "been around the block", too. Be sure to cruise the NKOTB Galleries and comment on the layouts. Constructive feedback is what its all about! Come and join in the fun of the NKOTB Adoption Agency. It's a fun way to support the New Kids and make them feel welcome in the DSP community.

Member Spotlight – Natalija aka TalyQ

    Diane

Visit her gallery and read more about Natalija on the DSP Spotlight Page.

‘Definitely digital’ is one way to define this month’s DSP Member Spotlight, who has been a DSP Member since April 2004 when it all started. A DET 10 and 11 Alumni, her gorgeous layouts shine in the DSP galleries – but perhaps you will know you will know Natalija better as TalyQ.

“What I mostly love do is to do graphic-style layouts - those who use a lot of blending modes, masking - layouts that look definitely digitally made,” said Natalija. A favorite layout that displays this quality, and one she really loves, is Precious Child. “First the photo has a very interesting angle and then I love the combination of the blended/masked elements and the more realistic ones on top of it. I also love the colors of this layout,” she said.

Natalija says she finds inspiration in: “Creating memories for my children and expressing myself creatively.”

I think it is safe to say that many DSP members will find inspiration in this talented member’s gallery. So be sure to check out Natalija’s Gallery and read more about her on the DSP Spotlight Page in April and then take part in the Scraplift the Spotlight Challenge. Congratulations, Natalija, and thank you for sharing your talent with us as the April DSP Member Spotlight.

Featured Designers

We're changing things up a bit, and going forward DSP will now feature TWO of its Designers each month. We start our new "double team" feature with a letter from CarolAnn Gary and a tutorial from Nicole Young.

    CarolAnn Gary

Inspiration for scrapping or for designing is an elusive thing. I suspect that we are inspired by many different things, but some things are universally inspirational. Seeing really good art, created by someone else, will cause most people to feel a stirring of creativity and a desire to put together a piece of work that they love. As a scrapper and as a designer, I find myself struggling sometimes, to produce anything worthwhile. At times like that, I have found that there are a few things that will jump start me again.

The first thing I do, is to walk away from my project - literally. I go for a walk - preferably outside. A good brisk walk will let me mull over what I am working on and often I will have a new way of looking at it when I return.

My next choice is usually to go shopping! This is almost always the kind of shopping that requires no money. Just looking at pretty things in the fabric store or craft store or even the linen department of a big store, is refreshing to my creative soul! I love all kinds of color and texture and shape. I have to say, however, that my favorite place to go shopping for inspiration is a book store. I can spend a long time browsing through magazines and taking in fresh ideas.

My third choice - although really the one I use most often - is to browse through the galleries at DSP. We have some amazing scrappers here! There are a few places I go pretty often. One is the Hall of Fame gallery. There is a terrific variety of layouts by some of the best. Another place I hang out is the DET gallery. This wonderful group of ladies works tirelessly to create layouts that feature the kits of all the different DSP designers. It is a hard job because they have to use kits that they wouldn't normally scrap with, but they come up with really top-notch layouts. Sometimes I find a layout I like so much that I scraplift it.

An example of this is a layout by renee s from the DET.

I created the second layout from her inspiration. Mine is not exactly like hers, but you can certainly see that she inspired it!

    Multi-frame Cropping Tutorial for PS

Start with a photo that you want to creatively crop. 1 I am using a photo of my youngest sitting on a bridge.

Use your rectangular selection tool. Make sure you are on your photo layer in your layer palette.

Make a rectangular selection on your photo layer.

Right-click on inside the selection and choose “Layer via Copy.”

Make sure you click on your photo layer again in your layer palette.

    Create a new rectangular selection.

Right-click and choose “Layer via copy.”

Repeat this for as many rectangular crops as you want.

Once all your crops are made. Turn off your full photo by selecting your original photo layer in the layers palette and clicking on the “eye” icon. This will make your photo layer invisible.

***to add a little extra visual interest, crop some of the tops and bottoms of your photo crops***

    1

    1
    1

Next choose one of your photo crops (it won’t matter which one) and choose it from your layer palette.

We are going to add a “style” or effect to your photo.

To do this look at the bottom of your layer palette and choose the icon that says “fx.”

When your effect window pops up choose STROKE.

    Change your stroke to 30px.

Choose INSIDE from the drop down menu and change the color of your stroke to WHITE.

    Hit OK.

Once your stroke is made on your first photo crop, RIGHT CLICK on the layer palette where it says STROKE under your photo.

Choose COPY LAYER STYLE from the menu.

    1

    1

This will highlight all your layers in blue.

With all the layers selected in the layer palette, right click in the layer palette and choose PASTE LAYER STYLE.

All photo crops should now have a white stroke.

We are now going to right click on each layer effect in the layer palette one by one (it does not allow you to do more than one at once) and choose CREATE LAYER.

Do this for all photo crop layers.

    1

    1

Now choose one of your photo crops again. We are going to add a different effect.

Go to the bottom of the layer palette again and choose the “fx” icon.

    This time choose SHADOW.

Change your shadow to 50% opacity, 15 px s distance and 25 pixel size.

Again we are going to right click on the effect, choose COPY LAYER STYLE.

This time select your photo crop layers one by one, right-click in the layer palette and choose PASTE LAYER STYLE.

Do not select all the layers and do this all in one step or it will add shadows to your photo frames.

You now have shadowed photo crops with white frames!

***add some extra visual interest by warping the shadows. Do this by right-clicking on the shadow effect in the layer palette. Choose CREATE LAYER. Make sure you are on your shadow layer in the layer palette. Hit CTRL+T (this is choosing the Transform tool). In your work area right-click to bring up your transform menu. Choose WARP and move the corner boxes to create a warped effect. Double click the ENTER button on your keyboard or double click within the transforming box to apply your warp.***

      1 1

      1

Your Multi-frame Crop is now complete!!! Add some fun elements and journaling and you are DONE!
